  3. Here are a couple threads on how to make an adapter to run existing coils for the MXT, M6 etc. (Eclipse series) on the MX Sport. This would be a huge boon to those with large dollar investments in existing coils, especially aftermarket coils or even White's own coils that they are not making for the MX Sport. 4. This is the most difficult review I have ever written. I am not even sure I can call it a review. The first metal detector I ever got was a White's Coinmaster IV in 1972. As the years have gone by I have gotten very brand agnostic, but if I ever had a soft spot for a company it has been White's and the people that work there. However, after being at or near the top of the heap for a long time, things slipped once the the TDI and V3i were introduced in 2008 - 2009. Since then there have been new model introductions but nearly all have been derivative versions of earlier machines. Now, everyone does this, but in the last few years it has come to seem a very long time since anything really new came out of Sweet Home. The old machines continued to be great machines, but at some point you need to keep evolving as a company or just rest on your laurels. With machines becoming ever lighter and more compact it seemed to me only a matter of time before White's would have to make a break from its past rooted in huge circuit boards housed in even larger boxes. The wild card in all this has been a lot of changes in management and personnel at White's in the last few years. I admit to wondering what the heck was going on, but I continued to hope this old favorite would once again make a swing for the fences and score a home run. So when the first rumor of the MX Sport broke, I was all over it and then some. The first MX Sport thread on this forum set records for views and replies by a giant margin. Obviously I am not the only one who was really interested in a new White's offering and looking to find out all I could about it. I used the thread as a personal exploration tool as I delved into every aspect of this new machine, wanting to know everything about it. The new design seemed to me to represent a possible new future for White's and the feature list hinted at a machine that would not only match but improve on the MXT for overall features. It only made sense to me that this machine if done right could possibly replace the MXT as part of a totally new lineup of detectors going forward. I speculated on this a lot on the thread but also made the case that this would not be an MXT stuffed in a waterproof housing, but instead a fully unleashed version of the MX5. The MX5 has a small fan club insisting it is a very good detector, so I did not see this as a bad thing. White's supported this idea with a video posted on the forum comparing the MX Sport to MX5 and MXT and making the case for the MX Sport being the better machine of the three. A member of the forum, auminesweeper, took immediate and very strong exception to the video, saying that in his opinion White's was purposefully downplaying the MXT and at the same time playing up the MX Sport. I focused less on the video itself, since I think video tests pretty much show whatever you want to show, and just trusted the message White's was sending. It seemed a very strong statement by White's that the MX Sport was really going to be something special. More than ever I was thinking this was a major release from White's that would make people sit up and take notice. My faith in White's was such that I insisted auminesweeper was perhaps being unfair for laying into White's so strongly over the video. Then came some early reports with me being a bit slow to round up an MX Sport on release. But something funny started happening. Posts and threads on other forums started drying up, some with just a short note from somebody saying they gave the MX Sport a go and sold it quickly. People then piled on those folks for not giving the machine a fair chance. Which then really shut people up. I made a comment on Findmall about waterproof headphones not being on White's website and was promptly told I was bashing White's. The defenders of the faith are guarding the portals it would seem. Of more concern was Paul(CA) posting this on the Dankowski Forum "To be honest, I'm not pleased with the MX Sport. It's terrible, tones are too long and the coil foot print is too big and recovery speed is terrible as well." However, Paul also was able to find two modes that not only worked well for him but so well it made the machine all he wanted and then some "To be honest, My opinion White's only got two modes right (Prospecting & All Metal). These two modes are great especially Prospecting mode and can be tweaked to operate like a hot MXT" and "turns out the prospecting mode when turning off VCO turns the unit into an MXT only a tad hotter." So now I am thinking "hmmmm, maybe not all it could be but maybe a good niche unit at certain settings". All along I was counting on the MX Sport to be not only waterproof but lighter than an MXT. It then was revealed White's was quoting the weight without batteries and the machine basically weighs same as the MXT and if anything was a bit nose heavy. The shine was starting to wear off, but I continued to have faith that if I could get my hands on one I would see a gem in the rough. I finally did get one, a unit purchased and pulled from random stock, so what everyone else should be seeing at this point. I did a basic just out of box review recently on the forum. My goal when I wrote that was to wait 30 days before saying more, both to deal with other stuff I have going on in my life, but also to get more time on the machine under varied conditions. Well, I have had the MX Sport out and I ran into a problem. The same problem Paul had mentioned about the tones and recovery speed. Honestly, I thought that surely it can't be that bad, maybe Paul was just not used to the old fashioned White's boombox sound or had forgotten how it was? Having been responsible for generating a lot of discussion about the MX Sport prior to release and as a side effect in doing so creating what people these days call "hype" I think I put myself in a corner. In generating all that interest I think I have a certain responsibility now to raise a red flag if I run into one, perhaps earlier than I intended. What I am seeing is such that I feel I have no choice but to jump the gun on my plans and post early about the MX Sport. Long story short - after few hours with the MX Sport at a local park, bad soil, lots of targets, I have to say something now and not wait. Either the MX Sport has design goals and decisions made that are totally eluding me, or this thing has some issues. What, exactly, is this machine supposed to do? From the White's website: "This general purpose waterproof metal detector can do it all! Beach hunting, relics, coins and jewelry, and even prospecting. With it's roots in the MX lineup, MX Sport builds on the legendary MXT, with new features and the latest technology." What I am expecting here is a machine that hits on all cylinders, one that across the board works and works well. What I got in the park - fruit salad. That is the only thing I can think of to describe the audio on this detector when on the ground with real targets. It is not the tones per se - they are pleasant enough to listen to. It is like Paul has said. The tones grab and hold on too long, and for a machine where a selling point has been quick recovery it seems anything but. Worse, there are transient false signals. VDI numbers do not like to lock on, so if using multiple tones it is just tones all over the place and targets that come and go. The DD coil generates complex responses on close targets. A shallow single target can sound like two or more. All the time tones hanging on for a second or even two, and changing constantly. Basically, a real mess. The machine just never seems sure of itself. Now, I can hunt through just about anything but with all this going on it rapidly becomes apparent that trying to use the tones is a waste of time. The solution is to do what Paul did and just get rid of it all. By going to prospecting mode and turning VCO off you do end up with a powerful machine for digging non-ferrous targets. The problem is, if the way to get the machine to run well is to shut off all those neat features then what is the point exactly? It was bad enough I tracked down and borrowed an MXT just to make sure I was not nuts. Boom, the MXT proved again why so many people like it. Clean solid hits on targets, and after using the MX Sport like leaving night and going back to day. Relic mode, clean, simple, and effective. Relic mode on the MX Sport? Weird nulling overshoots, tones, all metal VCO buzzing - fruit salad. Either I am really, really missing something, or somehow the MX Sport got out the door doing things I just can't comprehend as being right. Did the people testing the machine see what I am seeing and think it is ok? Did it work differently for them, and some last second change resulted in side effects that got missed? Is my machine just defective? Based on Pauls comments I do not think so - I think he saw what I am seeing and I just could not believe it without hearing it myself. I confirmed what I am seeing privately with several other people before deciding to make this post. I am certain mine is not an isolated case. Well folks, the big problem I faced is I have a bunch of family visiting and I am going to be unable to follow up or do any more regarding this after tomorrow. I had two choices. One, just say nothing for that 30 days until I got more time and hopefully figure things out better. However, my conscience just won't let me do it. Despite what people may think it does not take forever to figure a metal detector out when it comes to certain basic things. What I am seeing now any expert would see in minutes. Worse, a novice may see it and think it normal. I sure don't want people to think I am giving up on the MX Sport by any means as it does have great possibilities in some regards. But based on all the speculation and hope that this machine would be an unquestioned across the board do it all and do it well type machine I just had to say something right now. I always tell people to not rely on my word alone when it comes to judging metal detectors. Usually that is to damp down overly excited expectations. The same must hold true here - do not decide the MX Sport is bad just based on my mentioning an issue with my particular unit. Time and more reports will tell just how much of a problem this is and how White's will respond to it.
  5. I now have a shiny new White's MX Sport that I just purchased to put though its paces. Nice solid, attractive machine, 4 lbs 3.7 oz or 4.23 lbs with eight Duracell AA alkaline batteries. The pod is a bit larger in real life than I thought it would be and the headphone jack placement as anticipated is a head scratcher. On the other hand after hearing various complaints about the audio I am not seeing any issue there for me. Yeah, it is a digital type sound more akin to my DFX than what you would expect from an MXT but I don't have any problem with it. The coil actually seems smaller than what I had anticipated - the photo on the box makes it seem huge. White's is not quoting weights for the MX Sport on its website that I can find. However, the MX Sport User's Guide lists it at 4 lbs. The MXT basic model in the past has been quoted at 4.3 lbs with batteries and MXT Pro at 4.4 lbs with batteries (different coil added weight). White's changed the rules it would appear and is listing the MX Sport weight in the manual as without batteries. At 4.23 lbs with batteries it is a tiny bit lighter than the MXT but the MX Sport is not as well balanced either unfortunately. It is slightly nose heavy and if anything feels heavier on the arm than the MXT because of this. Overall I would say no improvement over MXT for weight and balance. The headphone thing I could not help but think that it is a real shame that White's has not taken their wireless headphone technology and made it more of a standard feature. I understand this is a machine that can possibly be used underwater and that would require a wired headphone. The reality however is most people will be using this detector above water, and an ability to use wireless headphones with it optionally would be very welcome indeed. It is something I am starting to think should be standard on any top end detector and White's misses an opportunity here that would have alleviated what is sure to be a common complaint with this detector. With wireless the waterproof connection could be left capped and only used if a person needed it for underwater phones. All in all an appealing modern looking metal detector with good features at a reasonable price. White's should do well with it. On the other hand it is not the home run category killer I was thinking White's really needed at this time. It seems more like an alternative to the MXT rather than a replacement for it. As a dealer I always tried to keep things very simple for people, and if talking about the possibilities on new White's machines I would probably be presenting it as the choice between waterproof or not. In other words, dry land or wading use only, go MXT; want to actually submerge the machine, get an MX Sport. If price were the issue than it would maybe be more about the MX Sport vs the MX5 but still just boiling down to the waterproof vs not waterproof thing. The MX Sport internet price is $749 and the MXT Standard is $729 (Pro $823) while the MX5 is $549 Well, that is that for now. I plan on using this machine quite a bit over the next month and will write up a much more detailed report in about 30 days after I get enough hours on the MX Sport to be able to talk more intelligently about the performance aspects of the machine. March 22 Update - The above is a fresh "out-of-box" review. Unfortunately, with only a little use issues have been revealed that are covered in a new thread White's MX Sport - Sweet Home, We Have A Problem
  6. Spent a few hours up in gold country, short Relic hunt on a friend's property. Recent rains made the hunt tough, ground was soaked and many areas not only were streams flowing but even the ground had a thin carpet of water flowing across the terrain. Was forced to remain near the road, maybe next trip venture in deeper. Still, through water and mud hiked to a pounded site. Pounded is an understatement, we've clobbered it but the MX Sport scored a few relics, no coins but a happy camper none the less. Those needing a faster snappier recovery, quicker audio. May want to use Prospecting mode VCO off position for Relic hunting, even inland detecting if the user prefers 2-tone. The other modes, tend to take away recovery and the audio drags on to long if the user is needing a faster mode for tough conditions. My favorite is using Prospecting mode VCO OFF position, SAT maxied out at 6 because of the abundance of iron. This is by far the best mode and features to use as a Relic detector, can he used for inland coin/jewelry hunting as well if the user is ok with 2-tone. Dug an eagle button, several pistol balls, toe tap, Henry shell and a neat buckel. Added a pic of a detector stand on the MX Sport, and the area the headphone plug is mounted. Using two zip ties to fasten the plug onto the slots for the arm strap, one of the cable clips attaches cord below handgrip. Thanks for looking, Paul
  7. White's may have created a prospecting detector with both Prospecting mode and Relic mode without even knowing it, thus comes the MX Sport Prospecting mode. Remember several of us wanting a GMT with a Relic mode, same detector only have a Relic machine with a high khz. Relic hunting with GMT sensitivity, maybe giving it an edge with separation. Then, flip back to Prospecting mode for nugget zip zip hunting if the user chooses to nugget hunt or detect mineralized fresh water sand with prospecting mode. With the MX Sport, White's did it with prospecting mode. A simple switch of turning off or on VCO is all it takes, plus having a SAT now the user can adjust recovery according to ground conditions for Relic 2-tone MXT performance. Iron grunt is locked, for the serious Relic hunter MX Prospecting mode with VCO off transforms the MX Sport into a high end contender. So it can be done, White's did it with the MX Sport Prospecting mode. Now, When will White's bring out the GMT Sport with with the added MXT mode using the GMT khz. I see a bright future for White's, it's coming! Paul
  8. I received the MX Sport a few days ago, already put it through the ringer mostly experimenting with settings. Then, When I found what worked for my type of Hunting bit an extremely mineralized dry sand river. Later, tested buried coins at an old park. To be honest, My opinion White's only got two modes right (Prospecting & All Metal). These two modes are great especially Prospecting mode and can be tweaked to operate like a hot MXT. With turning off VCO, the prospecting mode turns into MXT mode and using SAT the operater increase recovery. Any of you having an MX Sport try these settings, go to Prospecting mode. Then, turn off VCO, then bump up SAT between 4 to 5. Iron grunt always stays locked on, even when selecting off in case you see this. What you have with these settings is MXT performance yet faster recovery speed and more depth. The depth isn't from the mode itself, it's from the improvements from White's. To shift it back to Prospecting mode, turn on VCO for zip zip detection. That's all, as simple as that. Also, for some reason all metal and prospecting mode the coil has a normal footprint, and tones don't drag on. The other modes, well that's were you'll see what others don't like. Tones dragging on and the coil footprint is too big. I'm glad White's the prospecting mode is working like it should, turns out the prospecting mode when turning off VCO turns the unit into an MXT only a tad hotter. I'll share finds soon, already scored some silver using prospecting mode at a dry river bed. Love the zip zip Prospecting feature for mineralized sand, closest one can get without using a pi. Don't get me wrong, dislike the other modes but love the prospecting mode for its duel mode feature. HH, Paul
  9. In April 2016 issue of Lost treasure starting on page 44 you can read the review by Andy Sabisch. On the next page you can enter your name and have a chance to win with the right answer. Now this is just my opinion. I wouldn't buy it on what's said in Lost treasure I'd say I've learn more here about the MX Sport. Andy done a great job with his review. It's just so much info has been posted here about the MX Sport and we have Digger Bob with his review.. Chuck PS Something is not right. They are saying the contest is between Feb. 1st and Feb 29th. Before it always started the next month like March. Here the month is over half over with. Well I called Grove Ok. and like everything else you get a recording. They still open for business and I left them a message. I've been by there not too long ago and found only one guy there and I think that's the way it is most of the time. I've called more than one time to ICMJ and never got a recording.
  10. Hello! I'm new to this forum and want to "pick" your brains.... First off I've never done any nugget hunting. I'm hoping to get my Whites MXSports in soon. I'm going to test the prospecting mode the best I can with some pickers. The problem is that I don't have any nuggets! So you experts tell me what type and size of nuggets would be a reasonable test for the MXS? I know it won't hit tiny ones and will easily hit large ones. I just want to purchase maybe 3 nuggets for testing. I will be using the stock 10 inch coil right now. Maybe a smaller one when available? Can you help? Or maybe even sell me what I need? Thanks, Kenny

  12. Mike Hillis spotted an ad for an apparently waterproof Whites MX - perhaps an MXT variant? NOTE ADDED 7/23/16 - this thread started before the MX Sport was released and is loaded with great information about the detector. However, once released problems developed. Please read the thread at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/2307-new-archive-for-whites-mx-sport-threads/ for some of the latest information related to firmware and hardware problems with the MX Sport.
