Black sand in already difficult salty conditions acts a lot like bad ground when prospecting, and it's possible to track out tiny nuggets in bad ground using tracking so I'm sure in salty black sand beach conditions the same goes.

I have moderate black sand. Ran 80% of the beach today with sensitivity at 22-23. Two spots I had to drop to 19.
Now if one charges into that condition like a raging bull there might be a possibility the machine is not caught up. But in reality, who could hunt a spot like that going fast anyway? Surly not anyone looking for performance.
Today alone, I had two of the tiniest targets. So small I could not even find them after finger sifting for 5 minutes. Just left them.

My point is: For 4 years I have never "lost" a target I heard originally with the Equinox in tracking.  Now granted, I use a very quality set of headphones with ambient sound control. Does it make a difference? Don't know?
I just report the facts as I see/hear them as well. I know this was brought up a short time back and I did do a ground grab one day and ran it for a few hours. Frankly, I did not see any change in performance. Conditions include: Wet sand, wet sand water contact, and wave wash. That day I also had a fringe small target found in Tracking. Did a ground grab on it and I had no noticeable difference in target report.

If I get a ho-hum day, I will try a ground grab again. I will also do one in those nastier black sand concentrations I have.

Very small targets and targets that are exhibiting very small profiles like targets on edge, can become much weaker with repeated swings over them. They will be seen almost like part of the beach after several swings especially if their target IDs are already near the salt ground balance point and I accidentally do a slight up and down motion over them.

This has not been my experience. EVER!
If I heard it the first time, I could do 5 360's around it and not have one issue to recover. ALL I do is hunt in tracking!

I have also hunted with three different pod and coil combos. Also, the 15" coil which I have NEVER experienced a "lost" target do to tracking GB.

Sometimes I swear the 15" coil is better on small targets than the 11". The 15" coil always amazes me!
Feel free to show me one Utube Vid that proves me wrong!!!!

They're putting out a new antenna! Skip to the 10 minute mark to see this.

LOL> It is black "so you don't have to worry about that discoloration."

Well, that "discoloration" is the inside wire being eaten up by salt water. Now I cannot monitor it>>>great!

Guess I have never been the out-of-sight, out of mind guy.

Just like gold hunting, sometimes you have to walk away and let the detector balance out again and then go back to your pile/hole for a new look.

There is fact to your thinking. Sometimes I back out of a difficult target [like in the wave wash] let the Equinox settle down. Do a noise cancel and then reengage the target.

Wait, it didn't pick up the chain at all? Even going over it? Was iron bias the reason? Or was there another reason as to why the 800 didnt pick it up?

Some chains are too small to detect. I have little foil here, so 1 and 2's for me are gold chains or small pendants. Iron Bias 6 or below will not affect the reading of a gold chain.

Do you have it terminated at the remote or just have it running part way up the upper shaft, Dave?  The question was whether you could run it part way up the upper shaft but leave it in the shaft.  Doesn't work with the metallic upper, should work with a total CF shaft system.

I have the antenna wire from coil to remote in the CF rod. For what it is worth the last part to the remote goes through my metal hand grip.

I have not had signal issues. Will post a pic tomorrow.

    Beat me to it, Thomas.

For F350 Platinum - Since SteveG's system is totally CF it may not be a problem to bring it further up the shaft, and may better for preventing drop outs when submerged.

I have my antenna permanently mounted and up the center of my CF rod. NO ISSUES with signal. Including waist deep water and very forceful wave wash.

Ok and when you said "a break down in the signal",

    - Something ferrous will have a "break down" which means the signal will like, sound differently or sound like iron?

Yes, with Horseshoe mode on. It may sound great except for one angle. That target is 100% ferrous unless your TID says different. Non ferrous targets near the surface have the ability to double ring. Not to worry, your numbers will tell you to recover.
Anything at depth that double rings is ferrous! You will still get tricked in digging a few ferrous targets here and there that beat that system.

    - But a non-ferrous target will sound completely the same as you circle it from all angles?

    Yes, with Horseshoe mode on.
