Do a search on Pinpoint on this forum and you can get an idea of the spectrum of issues regarding pinpoint volume.  As Steve has said, some of it may be "real" as in an actual "volume" bug (that seems to happen while going into or out of pinpoint) and some of it may be imagined, because people are not used to how the pinpoint works on this detector where the volume appears to have to "lock on" to the target before it gets louder.  It is something ML is probably looking into for refinement because it does appear to be a little quirky.

Thanks, I'll search it. Mine is definitely and intermittent issue. I'll see if anyone else has the same exact problem. But this machine is a killer on small gold!!!

Wow a bit surprised you saying the 5000 doesn't pick up small chains . We  get them regularly  and unmistakable target . Maybe the different sands . Now using the Nox but I do pull out the 5000 as I love the machine .

The time I tried it on gold chains it did not hit on them. Silver it hits on just not gold. Maybe I didn't have the correct timing chosen or maybe because I was testing it indoors with lots of EMI. There is a bit of black sand and other purple looking sand here. Also not sure on how high the salt content is. I can hit small targets like tiny stud earrings but not those chains. I will have to try it again. Thanks Judy

Congrats on the beach finds. I am cleaning up on Long Island, and New York City beaches with my NOX 600. It paid for itself in gold the first month.

Nice to get it paid off. That was fast. I have always like my E Trac, CTX and GPX, but this is the first time I can say one of their machines has clicked with me this quick! It's just a pleasure to use.

The few little quirks I noticed with my 800 were chalked up to inexperience with the 800. Things such as pinpoint going silent and then coming back. I read as much as I can from those that know detectors well and extract what I can learn from them. I am getting my 800 back on Thursday but have no idea what they did to repair it. What I do know if it would have not totally quit working I would have kept using it. Hopefully whatever they did to fix it can be used in a firmware update later on.

To be truthful my biggest take away from watching the experts and reading what the experts have posted is the  preloaded modes by Minelab are close to perfect unless a person is in an area where the soil is highly mineralized. Everytime you tweak a mode to get what you're seeking you give up something to gain something else. That's my observation only.

Hi Norm S, If you find out what the issue with the pinpoint going silent is, can you please report on it here. Mine goes silent when I pinpoint but suddenly comes on after a couple of seconds, or sometimes I have to pinpoint a second time to get full volume. I'm not sending my unit in...... I just got it LOL It's finding gold and my beach season ends when the crowds get there at the end of May. I'll double pinpoint for the duration if I have to. Just curious on what that issue is.

That sure is a motley collection of coins.  Is that typical of the condition coming out of salt water in your area?

In particular, though, I'm curious about the middle (I'm assuming copper row) Memorial.  The diameter is quite a bit smaller than its neighbors, but it isn't eaten up like a typical Zincoln.  Is this unusual?  What piques my curiosity is the possibility that it's a wrong planchet strike.  (For example, penny dies striking a dime planchet.)  Those are extremely rare and valuable (although as always, condition of dug coins can really hurt the value).

My computer is really been odd lately. I answered this the other day and now my reply is gone???? So sorry for the delay - Yes this type of corrosion is typical for New England beaches. The Memorial in question is a copper one and has been eaten away both in diameter and thickness. In some flat lying beaches this is what happens to the coins. Some get a hard black crust that needs a hammer to break off, others just wear away like this one did. Silver holds up better but can degrade also. That is why I vote everything (including pull tabs) should be made of gold.....problem solved

Well, you reported Bill Southern saying end of May or June. Since everything in detector land is always late, I figured why even bother with end of May, just call it June. That said, all I am doing is reporting what you reported which other people are now reporting me as having reported when in fact.....

'they are here when they are here and not a minute before!'

I just need one before I die  That's all I ask. Soon would be a good option too!

  7. The picture below is from my hunt yesterday. I threw out the trash before your reply. The trash was minimal yesterday with a few small "hot" rusted iron objects, about 15 or so trash items in total. I understand about digging everything, as I use a Sovereign GT in all metal pinpoint mode. I get the fact that depth and sensitivity go hand-in-hand. But if the Nox is concentrating too much on small items at the beach this may actually be a drawback. So do not get mad at me but I would not rather see and dig little stuff...especially stuff that goes through my scoop holes.  By the way 367 pesos 151 coins in total and one lousy bracelet [no other jewelry].

Definitely do what ever you like to do. No one should get mad about someone else's way of detecting. I'm a firm believer that metal detecting is therapeutic and should not be a chore. Your finds prove that your way is best for you.  For me, I enjoy learning what each signal brings. Some of those deep faint blips are good targets, as are some of the tiny hits. In the end nothing I find gets wasted, since I scrap metal too

School, now it's obvious why you have good finds. You work for it. A great example of hard work paying off.

Thank You. I actually look forward to doing it again this Wednesday. Some people pay money to go to a gym, I get quite a workout and get money in return. Sounds good to me

With all do respect.......I do not want to find the items in your picture.

    Dave

Me neither  But my approach to detecting is different now that I am getting a bit older. I never get enough exercise, so I decided I was going to dig more targets and not just cherry pick the good ones. I could easily discriminate out many of those targets, but then I limit my exercise. It actually feels good knowing I can still dig like that and function the next day, sort of

Those smalls at the beach remind me of one night I had with the CTX and the 12" coil.  I stopped using it after I got the 17 but I did use it then.

The Nox get more of them than the CTX so far.  Those pieces of jewelry and I've attacked the rake up piles once.  I think I could find things in them now.

It's funny. The Equinox reminds me of an Etrac/GPX 5000 hybrid machine. It picks up small stuff like my GPX but has kind of an older Minelab multi frequency feel. Here's some of the small stuff it found at the beach that day. I had even smaller pieces but forgot to photograph them.

    School,

Well done.  At first I thought you were describing a portion of a beach as a cellar hole and I had never heard that term.  I found gold within my first couple of hunts at the beach also.  It gets better if you have targets.

    Well done.

    Mitchel

Yeah, sorry about that. My very first hunt with the Equinox was at a beat up cellar hole. My first hunt at a beach was the one I posted. So it was my second hunt with the machine overall. Here's the results of the cellar hole hunt. I did about 4 hours at the cellar and 9 hours at the beach.

    Not bad at all!!

What was the trash to keeper ratio?  I don't beach hunt much (maybe now I will that I have an EQ800!), but am curious how much junk you had to dig to get the old coins and silver & gold?

    Nice start for sure.

Hi Cal-Cobra, I dig a lot by choice. I have always been that way  Here's that days trash. I separate by ferrous and non ferrous. I feel it is one of the reasons I have been able to detect for 48 years now. But I must admit the reduced weight of this Minelab machine is a welcomed improvement

  13. I finally had a chance to hit the beach with the Equinox 800. My first hunt was at a cellar hole. It did fairly well considering I did not study up on it. This past week was it's maiden voyage at a beach. I was a little more up to speed at programming it. The machine exceeded what I thought I would get on this hunt. The is a moderate to heavy EMI location with not a lot of shoreline to escape away from it. It handled the EMI a little bit better than the CTX or the GPX.  My very first target was a junk earring stud. Nice, sort of micro jewelry. A little while later a part of a silver chain. Hmmm. Then another tiny chain and heart. Hmmm again. Next a silver chain and small ID bracelet. OK what gives? Three chains from a beach I hit a lot and I never found one chain. But the Equinox had more surprises in store. 2 Buffalo nickels right in a row, and then a thin gold heart. Probably attached to something bigger originally. And at last call, it gave me a beautiful .583 gold earring w/ice. Probably fake ice, but ice just the same  Next week I'm splitting the day with the GPX and Equinox at a beach I have found close to 70 silvers in a relatively small area of about 120 x 20 foot section. All  around 14" deep. I will cleanse it again with the GPX and then see what small things I missed. I am anxiously awaiting beach day !!

  14. I never liked comparison videos. It is too easy to slant the video to your brand. Now, I do trust some seasoned people for their opinions on the machine they are trying. Those I always watch. But someone new to the hobby that has just bought a machine has no business telling me how it performs

  15. I bought the CTX the first day it was available. It worked well for a while and then started saying  "Coil not detected" and would not work. I'm thinking your Equinox problem may be a coil problem, but not in the cable. It may have something gone wrong internally, in which the the coil is recognized by the machine. Just a guess based on a similar situation I had. I bet they give you a new coil. You are a lucky person to already have your machine. I am jealous LOL.

  16. I do a beach that has a train, that energizes it's tracks about 30 feet from it. I'm using the GPX 5000, so is the DD coil still the best option? Not sure if the mono coil will handle the salt and EMI. I run my machine fairly hot too. Deep silver at 14" is common , but sometimes you have to wait until the rails de-energize, in order to hunt. I have a 12x15 mono coil, but always thought it would not work well in that environment? Thoughts??

There is a lot of extremely important information in these two paragraphs.

Even though I don't live remotely close to the area mention above I can inform all that this kind or very similar ground can and does, all but shutdown all VLF machines.  I have many old school sites that will easily fall in the above category.  I can take any VLF machine to these sites and you would think the entire area was nothing but a carpet of nails.   The Fe04 meter on my F75 is also 6 of 7 bars.  The material also attracts to a magnet with ease.   These sites will be the first visited with the Equinox

    F

You may want to try that area twice, once when you get the machine and once after you have had the machine for a while. It may take some time to get the best settings for that type of situation. I'm guessing it would have to get some coins out of there with the fast recovery, and at depth target id. Let us know how it goes.

Does seem odd to have the flag ship detector...... especially at its price, have a NEW detector step in appearing to do as well or out do the very machines that the flag ship is struggle to compete with...... yet remain the flag ship.   How do we now define flag ship?   Not sales or performance.   Ill have to see the difference now to decide if ML is correct about BBS/FBS still being top dog...... in some areas it may not be unless theres something we just dont know yet.

Could be that the flag ship detector is still in the works. If the Equinox is second string to something bigger, then I better get to saving my change for the top dog. I'm still hoping for that pulse discriminator that Santa reneged on!

  19. Every time I read more on it, I like it better and better  Who knows with the 17" coil it may perform In ways my CTX can not on the beach. The same goes for iron infested areas on dry land. The CTX will probably win in the open areas of the beach, but there are some patches where iron nails are everywhere. This is where I want to see what it can do. Interesting to see what part 4 is all about

Welcome aboard sohN. Best use of the word NOX I've read so far. Good luck out there.

 Thanks. I had to get that word in my name somehow. I got a feeling I will be with this machine for a long, long time. I do a lot of beaches in the winter and cellar holes in the summer. Spring and fall I split between the two.  The fast recovery with stable ID make this an ideal addition to my other machines. The only thing that can make it better is if it handles EMI better, or at least equal to the CTX.

  21. Hi everyone, I'm glad to be here and happy to see a forum where people are as excited about the Equinox as I am. I'm mainly a Minelab guy, and inching closer to detecting 50 years. Not quite there yet  Mine is on order and I have plans for an exciting spring season with it. Looking forward to seeing what others think of the machine, when theirs arrives. HH
