Went coin-shooting at a local park today and dug 30 items: 1 Chuck E Cheese token, 1 Canadian cent, and $1.34 in US. Very successful hunt for me!

The Canadian penny was crusty but showed hints of copper under the dirt. So, out of boredom, I started cleaning it up with my new set of André pencils. When I could read the date, I saw it was some sort of commemorative, so I looked it up online. The first image that caught my eye was someone selling a coin in similar condition to mine on Etsy for…

    …wait for it…

    $47,100!!!

After a few seconds of shock/greed/horror (I should have cleaned it more gently) common sense prevailed and I read the rest of the search results. A circulated 1867-1967 cent is worth between $0.25 and $0.45. The guy on Etsy must be, as we used to say in high school, “trippin.”

    Still, a cool find.

(These photos don’t do my find justice. I needed to exaggerate color/contrast/shadow trying to make the inscriptions legible.)

There’s no reason you couldn’t post yours up on etsy for $46,999!

There’s a town park nearby that I’ve never detected.  It has a woodchip totlot so I thought I’d get there early Saturday morning with the deus II and see what I could find.  I hardly ever hit totlots, but I have limited places to hunt so I thought it would be worth a try.  I spent about an hour in the totlot and only got $1.32 in clad and some junk.  So I thought I’d hit some of the grassy areas of the park.  This park isn’t very old but it was a nine hole golf course before.  I think the golf course dates back to the 80s so not expecting anything really old to turn up.  Before long I found an old shotgun headstamp. Then I found what looks like an old metal wheel off of a toy truck.  Hmmm, I’m thinking maybe there was an old house here before the golf course.  Just a few minutes later I get a very sweet sounding high tone in my custom general 1 program. It’s showing 92-93 on the tid.  I was hoping for a silver dime but about seven inches down out pops a slick no date slq!   I had to leave soon after that but I went back on Sunday hoping for more silver.  Try as I might I only managed two wheaties (1918 & 1920) but did find some nice relics.

Looks like I’ll be going back there more often!

Sorry to quote my own post but in the second pic, right upper corner are two copper washers.  I dig these quite often. Does anyone know what they were used for?

very satisfied. I'm not into detector wars and harbor no ill feelings to those who would. I think detecting is fun. I look forward to every swing and every hole I get to dig.

I wish all metal detectorists held this point of view.  I commend you for that. Some are too opinionated and too quick to attack someone else’s opinion. I see it on the so called friendly forum a lot. Because of that I find myself reading and posting here more and more.  The drama over there is entertaining at first, but after awhile it gets to be too much.  Lol.

Yes I noticed this,  the D2 conductivity scale seems to be compressed for high conductors and extended for lower ones . Not a pb for me as I only hunt by hear and never look at the VDIs but the D2 cond scale seems to be very different from a Vanquish or an Equinox for example ...

Yes.  I posted about this a while back. Maybe they could add a program where high conductors have more TID range.  For US users all the silver coins are ringing up mainly from 90-96.

    Here’s what I said a while back:

Initial thoughts:  I really like the lightweight and ergonomics of the deus2.   My nox feels like a tank in comparison (11” coil).  As far as performance goes, and me being a silver coin hunter, I feel the silver range on the deus is more compressed than the nox.  Silver range on deus2 is about 90-96.  The silver range on the nox is 26/27-35/36.  Both of these ranges are for dime to half dollar. As Steve said in another post the deus seems to be made more for beach hunting with an expanded low to mid conductor range that would work well on gold rings.

I don't have a Deus II yet but a friend of mine does and he did the update.  His Deus was very noisy afterwards so he contacted XP directly via email about any changes that might cause this because of the update.  He was told all they changed was the large numbers and adding Chinese language.  They suggested the problem could be EMI.  Hope this helps everyone.

Also, I am a little surprised that Calabash Digger hasn't addressed this since he has spoken about every aspect of the Deus II so far.  Maybe someone who knows him could ask him his opinion which he doesn't seem shy about sharing, right?

    Bill

He did a video about this.  He says the depth hasn’t changed.

No you are clear and I understand what you are saying.  We’re just concerned about different aspects of the botched “stealth”update rollout.   I get that you are going to hold off on the update.  But what about those who already updated or new purchasers who are delivered units with ver 0.4 or 0.5 sw out of the box?  XP is not telling them to hold off on the upgrade so they are going to blindly upgrade to the latest posted version assuming it has been adequately QC’d and are none the wiser.  XP needs to 1) inform the customer base ASAP of the issue, 2) restore the stable “old” ver 0.6 so users can revert back to the “best” performing stable version also ASAP and 3) fix the issues with the “new” ver 0.6 including giving it an appropriate distinct version number to restore configuration control.  This is a really disappointing throwback to XP’s sloppy update configuration control issues with the version 4 update to Deus I.  Not a good look.

    Absolutely!

Except XP didn't post it as 0.7, it installs as 0.6 (shows 0.6 on boot up of the remote)...but definitely adds the TID screen and also affects performance in a mixed bag manner. Looks like they clumsily lost version control which is not a good thing...

I’m probably not being very clear.  My point is that it’s not an official xp update yet until they announce it as 0.7.  I’m wondering why they are letting owners download a “new” 0.6 version without it being a finalized version.  I have not downloaded this partial update and won’t until xp sends out an email that the new 0.7 version is available to download.  I can live with the small screen for now.

Did XP officially announce this update?   I didn’t get an email from them.  I think Gary Blackwell’s video is the closest thing to an official announcement.  If I’m remembering correctly even he says the official update is not ready yet.

In fact he calls the update the new “naught point seven” version.

Trying to look into this with XP contacts.  So you lost both depth performance AND you now get double dashed lines on overload signals?  How much depth loss? Is this across the board on all modes or just a favorite mode?   Just trying to characterize this better for my POC, thanks.   I haven't had a chance to test this version yet.

Disappointed they did not advance the ver # so people could roll back, if desired.  That was some sloppy ver control right there.

I like it but Im going to hold off a few days until the WS6 issue is resolved. Besides I have to do it on work laptop because I’m prehistoric.  Has anything else been upgraded? Or is it just the giant TID numbers?

Gary says something about full tones being more like deus1 after update.

    Great find on the ring!

Are you in a gold bearing area of North Carolina?

If so have you did any prospecting for gold in that creek running through your yard?

Thanks!  Yes, there is gold in this part of NC. I tried panning once in that stream and I also ran the nox in gold mode where the stream is undercutting the bank back in the woods but I didn’t find anything.  I also really don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to finding gold.

That's a nice backyard! That's how I got started, finding relics in my backyard.

Looks like you're going to do great with the D2.

Are you going to try and fix the ring, or add it to the silver box?  Sorry for all the questions. I'm about to try my hand at low temp silver soldering.

Thanks!  I’ll just put that ring in my silver collection.  I did some silver soldering many years in a metal smithing class I took as an art elective while in college.  I don’t remember anything about how it’s done though.

After several days of research, testing in a controlled environment and then actual operation on Cocoa Beach, my simplified bottom line: The Deus 2 is a better detector than my Equinox 800.

Summary of my conclusions by area: (In the interest of brevity and simplicity, I did not include the detailed values/numbers/results from each of my individual tests…..boring!)

Build Quality: Deus 2 by far. I don’t see the potential for broken coil ears, no wobbly shaft, better water proof characteristics/capability, more solidly built control box, better arm cuff and better overall design of the total unit—excellent compact travel capability. I do think the arm cuff stand could/should be wider to provide more stability when laying it on the ground.

Simplified use: Equinox—-but only initially. Admittedly, the Deus 2 menus, locations and option functions have a steeper learning curve...but only after a day or two. I quickly became very comfortable with it.

User manual: Deus 2. Comprehensive, better layout and easily understood. An update is needed however as the manual doesn’t cover the Beach P and Fast 40 programs which are available in the Remote Control. Another feature I think XP could add that would help flatten the learning curve would be to provide a detailed menu tree in the user manual showing where to find each function and what role that function plays in the overall operation of the unit. I would also like to see a graphic, in spreadsheet form, that shows all the factory settings for each program...just as a quick reference which allows you to see and compare the settings of each program in hard copy form.

Sensitivity at depth: Deus 2. It’s simply the latest and improved/better technology. Clear and more accurate target ID at depth throughout the spectrum of target size and composition.

Depth: As we know, depth is highly dependent on many factors unrelated to the detector itself but overall and in general, the Deus 2 can detect targets at greater depths in most cases than other detectors I’ve used.

Stability: Deus 2. More and better options to quiet the chatter even in challenging salt water environments where I do most of my detecting. The Salt Sensitive adjustment is a game changer for me as a beach hunter. I can leave the main sensitivity setting alone and quiet the detector with the Salt Sens option which only neutralizes the sensitivity to the mineralized salt!

Initial Cost: Equinox…. However, in my opinion, one gets what one pays for. When you add all the after market equipment to rectify the wobbly shaft, weak coil ears, fragile arm cuff, control box cover etc, the final cost of the Equinox quickly approaches that of the Deus 2.

Ergonomics; Weight and balance--Deus 2 by far! Around 2 lbs beats around 5 lbs everyday, all day.

Personalized programs: Deus 2 provides slots for 12 personal programs and are easily added.

Charging: Equinox. Single cable vs 3 pig tails and somewhat fragile coil clip is much simpler and less vulnerable to ham handed use. Having said that, I do like the totally wireless design of the Deus 2.

Under water: Deus 2 has the edge here even though it requires the manual addition of an antenna since blue tooth just doesn’t work in the water. But I’d much rather take the time and effort of installing that wire than risk the real possibility of flooding we all know is an unfortunate chapter of the Equinox history.

Pinpointer and Headphone connectivity: Deus 2. I really like how the MI-6 pinpointer pairs with the remote and can be controlled by the remote. I also appreciate how the headphones automatically connect with the remote when the remote is powered on and off.

One final thought regarding the Deus 2—the back phones. I don’t like them. On-the-ear design just doesn’t make it at the beach. Ambient noise such as wave action and the crowd over comes the back phones by a wide margin. To me, they’re uncomfortable to boot. Yes, I tried the after market full cover headphones on my Deus 1 a few years ago wherein you slide the WS-6 “puck” onto the headphones. I just didn’t like that set up...I guess I’m just more of a purist in that regard. So I’ll be among the first on the list for XP’s WSA II XL over-the-ear headphones when they become available in the May-June time frame. I do like the fact that if you wanted to, you can control the Deus using just the WS-6. I much prefer using the remote however.

So what does all this mean for me? The Deus 2 will be my primary detector...but I won’t be selling my Equinox 800s any time soon. The Equinox is still a very good detector...and much better since I modified it with Steve Goss’ outstanding shafts.

Please keep in mind, that as I always say, these thoughts of mine may be worth just as much to you as you paid for ‘em. In the end, it’s only the view from my foxhole….

    Very nice write up Dan!

Thoroughly enjoyed your descriptive testing outings with the D2-11”. I would have preferred my first uses with the 9” coil, but I’m grateful to have m D2-11” now that the milder weather is breaking through ( I’m hearing the pleasant cacophony of peepers now). Hoping todays snowstorm is on the low side of forecast and melts quickly. I’ve been out with my D2 only 4 brief sessions and there’s so many programs I’ve yet to try- so far my favorite is P2 sensitive but I have many to try out yet. Your reports have been very helpful to me. I hope it’s not long before you get your own Deus 2.

The D2 is so versatile with all the programs and adjustments you can make to them.  It’ll keep me busy on my limited number of sites that I have trying them all.

  16. The forecast for this weekend is very cold temps.  When I got home from work yesterday the temp was in the low 60s so I figured I’d get an hour of practice with the D2 in my pounded yard.  I was getting a few bullets and working my way back to the house when I get a nice, fainter sounding 85-86.  I dig down about 7” and it’s a silver ring!   I thought it might be a deep wheat or even a zinc penny.  It’s marked: sterling-fspq.  I was hunting in a custom park program.

“I always run 0 Iron bias on nox. Bump it up to 3 in my hot soil and you will miss many deep targets. The Nox high tones on nails like the Simplex. Legend gives very few high tones on nails.”

It will be interesting to see how the Legend responds after it gets the new iron bias update.  You got to like Paystreak’s videos.  The guy puts out an honest video.  I’m

  18. In this video he mentions that the equinox falses a lot more on nails than the Legend.  The legend that he’s testing has a preset iron bias which would keep the falsing to a minimum.  I wonder if he runs his nox in zero iron bias?  If he does, it definitely would false more than the legend.  I’m wondering if both detectors had equivalent iron bias settings would his statement above still hold true?

    7) LAST OUTING WITH THE D2 11" - HUNTING DEEP COINS WITH RELIC- DEEP HC - SENSITIVE :
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my last outing as I have to send back the Deus2 to its owner ( Chateau Numis MD shop -  France ).

I decided to go to a wood where I found several 18th Revolution and 19th Napoleon III coins a few years ago .  It was probably an old path that has disappearead and it is now a wood there ...

I tried first the RELIC mode , as it is the deepest on my bed test ( see thread page 1 : DEPTH TESTS WITH THE DEUS2 11" ).  However I just used it a few minutes because it is too noisy and almost unusable in the field for me.😕  It bangs on each iron , bad luck for me because I like silent detectors ... Second you need to continously look at the RC screen for the VDIs because the audio is only ALL METAL . btw I did not try the IAR audio disc as I am not convinced by this setting due to depth loss ...

Then eventually I preferred to switch to DEEP HC which is easy and fun to use in the field. I found a few targets with it , mostly 1st WW trash . Very good news as this area is pounded as I have already been here with an Equinox and a Vanquish 540 .

As I was finding nothing interesting and as there are some irons in this area, I changed to SENSITIVE which is more reactive than DEEP HC . Just after the change I heard a faint but very clean high-pitched signal . I switched back to DEEP HC to hear the difference between the modes . The signal was a little stronger with DEEP HC then I would not have missed the target with it for sure ...

Eventually I dug the target which was a coin ... A splendid 5 CENTIMES Napoleon III 1862A bronze coin .. Incredible ... 🙂😹👍    Very interesting because I already found a very nice silver 1 FRANC 1859 in the same area last summer. Perhaps a coin spill ...I must come back here to investigate a little more 🙂 ...

It was time to go back home . Again the Deus2 has performed very well during this outing. What a great detector .. II am sure it will be a best seller despite its price ...  🙂✌️
