I am not talking Cottage Grove, Oregon. I admit being from a family of the South I may take liberty to make a story entertaining. However, it was their story and like you I originated a skeptic from Oregon. The location is on Highway 96 between Clear Creek and Somes Bar. The Klamath River mining claim is K-25B Cottage Grove (mylandmatters.org). Check it out for yourself, wonderful country.

Here are the GPS coordinates for the Klamath Cottage Grove: N41* 36.156’  W123* 30.335’  Cottage Grove isn’t much more than a cottage. There is a summer camp of sorts to the NE on the river.

Here are the GPS coordinates for the old cabin flat: N41* 35.890’ W123* 30.522

Here is the approximate GPS coordinates for the freezer box tree: N41* 34.605’  W123* 32.453’

Sorry the locals kept the nickel since at the time I did not own a waterproof detector. Here’s a recent web photo of the South Yuba River at flood stage (not mine).

I will definitely check it out!

A few years back while working on a “S” bend of the Klamath River immediately south of Cottage Grove, two locals related their experiences during the “Christmas Floods of 1964”.  We were all standing along an outside bend looking up at an old freezer box hung up in a tree a hundred feet above the summer flows. The day before across the river a 1964 nickel had been detected on an old cabin flat, the cabin being long gone. According to their stories, cutoff and isolated upstream near Happy Camp at the confluence with Indian Creek, the flood flows were pushing giant boulders down the river channel. They both stated you could hear the boulders gridding against the river channel bedrock over the roar of the flood waters, the ground was vibrating.  Later it was estimated 24 inches of river channel bedrock was grounded away during the 1964/65 floods.  At the time (of the stories) I was ferrying “play” dirt across the river from another outside bend down stream of the freezer below the tail-out of an old upslope gold operation. The gold was deposited thin sheeted (gold leaf thin) in the cracks of the bedrock above the summer water level. The “Great Flood of 1862” and the “New Years Flood of 1997” no doubt grounded loose floods of gold trapped deep in the channel bedrock cracks and cervices of many a river beds in both the Klamath and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges…. Only to find a deeper deposition crack beyond the depth of reach. It took days to pan the leaf gold from the coarse sands which is directly responsible for a downfall into detector addiction. This is not a call for help.

Sounds like a tall tale; those locations don't mesh.

  3.     I put mine out there for sale locally to see if I could get some bites. All I got was the bottom feeders looking to lowball the decent price that I offered. I decided to keep it, and just bought an M8 coil. Looking forward to spring time.

If anyone needs an M8 coil, my local dealer has one left. PM me for his phone number. ** The coil is sold**

You make a very valid point, Steve, about the Big 5 being reduced to the Big 3.  Despite all of us wishing something different, First Texas is no longer a player.  Garrett continues to be mystifying.  The Apex seemed like a first step into multi-frequency but whatever momentum was generated by it is long gone.  They clearly have the R & D muscle since they developed the Axiom to come up with something innovative.  Hard to anticipate what is next for them.

Nokta is another company that puzzles me.  Yes, the Legend is a good detector.  But it was designed to match/exceed the Equinox 800.  Since the Legend all i see from them is a continuing release of low-to-mid level detectors, so many i don't even know what makes each one different.  For me, Nokta has to take a shot at something new to move the needle, like XP did.  Otherwise i think they may be seen as just a copycat company, only trying to release models that compete with older detectors.  That would be a shame since I admire their tenacity and customer service.

That leaves us with Minelab and XP.  The current crop of Minelab detectors (900 and Manticore) feel like filler detectors to me.  By this I mean that they have tweaked their current platform while finalizing their next technology release.  Historically this has been their pattern.

XP is the company that really intrigues me.  The Deus II was such a surprise that one has to wonder if XP has a similar big bang to release sometime next year.

Then again, what do I know?  I've been hunting with a Tesore Sidewinder for the last two months!

I still have and will keep my 3 Tesoro’s due to their simplicity and no nonsense  operation. (Lobo ST, El Dorado, and Silver uMax). They’re also great to have around for other family members to use on occasion.

I am always on the hunt for a bargain. What I really wanted was a Nugget Finder Evo but I settled for a cheaper used Coiltek 9" Elite. It seems to work well with the Tdi Pro but I'll reserve judgement until I've used it on the goldfields in hot ground. It will be interesting to see how it compared with the Sadie and Detech 8" mono. All the best, more to come soon.

I had an EVO, I didn’t notice anything superior, except for a little more sensitivity over the TDI 7”. The Coiltek should be similar.

I emailed Garrett in January a question about the headphones dropping connection (just needed to put them on the correct direction) and mentioned how the cover was a sloppy fit and tape cured the problem, no big deal. They sent me a new tighter fitting cover anyway. Great service.

I've gotten 3 covers and a coil from them and none fit tight!

A VLF is always going to slam the tiny nuggets in an air test very well, put the nugget into some difficult ground and see which one detects it deepest.

Garrett was very nice to send you a replacement coil due to a coil cover not fitting snug.  Do you not use PVC tape around the edges of your coil cover to ensure a nice snug fit and keeping the dirt out? Common practice on Minelab machines, not only that it takes a bit of the wear and tear your coil cover would get from bumping into rocks and so on.  My Coiltek 10x5" coil for the 6000's coil cover fitment is terrible; it just falls off if you lift the coil off the ground and shake it a bit however tape solves it completely so no problem!

Garrett has always been outstanding and generous in backing their detectors. I’ll just tape them.

  8. Has anyone had issues with the coil covers falling off? I have. Garrett acts like this is new to them. They sent me another cover for better fitment, but it fit the same. Then they sent a coil and cover, but there was no difference in fitment.

    NEXT ISSUE:
I did an air test win a small gold piece. The Axion detected it at 2.5-3”. I air tested the same piece of gold with my GMX Sport, it detected it at 4-4.5”. This was also the case with the ATX.

is the air test the issue?

Kind of weird that Minelab has not given U.S. dealers any pricing yet. You would think if they were going to be available in the near future they would do at least that.

Maybe like before when the Manticore was not yet available, they’re trying to build suspenseful anticipation, while at the same time losing customers, this time. “IffySignals” received an 8” tester, so they have the coil setup finalized by now. Now, for me, it depends on pricing as whether to keep or sell.

'll copy and paste my entry from another forum on this subject....

"so coil in UK is $329 pounds which is $424 US dollars. $1600 US price is 69.2% of converted $2312 UK price for the Manticore. So applying that to the coil....69.2% of $424 is $293.4.

Is $293 (I bet it will be $299) reasonable for the 15" coil?"

I’m looking to get the 8” myself. Iffy Signals posted a video on gold nuggets with it. It appeared to be more sensitive than the other 2.

I didn't see Micronta in that first list! 😁

I'm only half serious about that emoji, because I wonder if the Micronta detectors actually outsold some, or even all the companies in that first list. More specifically, the exposure of those Micronta detectors was massive, considering they were in every Radio Shack store and catalogue. Add to that the very low cost, and they probably sold a s--t ton of them. Most of which were probably returned, or found a new home in the back of a closet lol.

Ya' never know. Micronta might make a comeback and be on Steve's next list 🤣

I bought a Micronta in the mid '80's, I took it back the next day! It couldn't detect a dime at 1.5 inches. Then I bought a Tesoro and was happy for many years. ☺️

First Texas should drop the Teknetics and Bounty hunter lines altogether, Teknetics is just a redundancy to Fisher. They should vamp up the research on some new Fisher model types and capabilities, plus drop the "First Texas" name in favor of Fisher Research. Just MHO.

  12. I don’t think I can stomach $500 for an 8” coil, or for any coil for that matter. How much are we really gaining over the capabilities of an Equinox 900? The after-market makers would ask nearly as much for the 8” coil I’m sure. I really feel like we’re being price gouged along with the hype. I may dump the Manticore back onto the market and go with the 900 when my military discount comes back around, (one per year).

  13. The detector is extremely sensitive. Around my house and immediate area, I’ve had to run on 2 sens. Even at 2 it is very sensitive. Garrett could reprogram it to make 2 clicks per block. Making it 16 steps instead of 8, for a finer adjustment. I think that they will make refinements once they get enough feedback and create a program for updates.

Hey guys I was our this weekend at gold eye claim in Quartzsite AZ was using the mono that came whitey the kit there were guys with GM1000's and 1 GPX6000  both were killing it with small nuggets I Coyle even pickup what they were finding and the Garrett was noisy no matter what I did grant it didn't know about the gb window only the standard pump and hold button until it beeped also my head phones keep disconnecting or picking up noise unless I'm right next to head of detector. But sure if I'm doing singing wrong but the first time I took it out with another friend who has an Axiom and we both found multiple target at the 1.grain size could the noise and loss of sensitivity ve from the gm100's and the GPX6000 power help in ready to send it back to see if there's an issue

Old be interested in that also.
