Sorry Steve, didn't mean to usurp your response...my bad!?

I will venture a guess and say that perhaps the gold is alloyed with some other mineral(s) that give the nugget as a whole extremely weak coductivity? It's definitely a head-scratcher. Is there a physicist in the room?

How do you guys remember where all these gold patches are anyway and how to get back to them in your truck or on foot without getting hopelessly lost in the desert? GPS I assume ?
No GPS required for me - I never forget where I've found nuggets, and I couldn't get lost in the desert if I tried because there are always landmarks to go by, but put me downtown in a big city in the middle of a bunch of skyscrapers, and I get all kinds of turned around in no time, lol!

- you proved that these newer detectors can re-open old grounds, that the favored yellow stuff is still out there to find. Impressive also is the size of some of those finds. Hopefully by re-swinging over old stomping grounds - your trash targets were fewer.
Dave, you've hit the nail on the head. I knew I'd find some gold going over old patches with the Zed, but to find 300 nuggets, and some sizeable ones at that? It's a real eye opener. And yes, fewer trash targets is a definite benifit to reworking old nugget patches! ?

Lunk,
Great shooting! Love that sound of them deep sweet targets and a missed section of and old patch. Stay where your at, we just got a ton of rain up this way.

As much as I love nugget hunting the RP area, there's a saying amongst us old nuggetshooters, and quoting the legendary Smokey Baird: "never quit gold to find gold." Besides, I'm liking the warmer weather that has driven out the majority of snowbirds already. But I will be there in time for the 3-day detector training for Gerry's Detectors on April 8 through 10.

Just curious about the thorns.. what is the thorn to nugget ratio?
strick
Unfortunately Strick, there are WAY more thorns than nuggets, lol.

Ladies and gentlemen ... it is more than what you use but Lunk finds gold where he cleaned up with his 5000, 4500, 3000, etc.
It's true, and one of the reasons I have been concentrating on these old patches is to see how much of an improvement the ZVT technology is over the PI, and I can honestly say that it is as revolutionary as PI is over VLF.

Gridding an old patch as usual with my GPZ 7000 the other day here in the sunny Arizona desert, I had to smile as the WM12 wireless module suddenly emitted a mellow, warbly signal. Typically heralding a deep, reasonable chunk of gold, this type of signal always gets me excited. The target was out of the ground after digging over a foot into the highly mineralized red soil-a beautiful 28 grammer! Several smaller nuggets were found within a 4 square foot area, for a total of 35 grams for the day - a rare occurrence these days. The grand total for this winters prospecting season is now up to 6.5 ounces; my goal was to hit 6, and with nearly 2 more months to go before heading back home in May it's definitely my second best season ever...so far. ?
Good luck out there!

You're not missing anything with that setup, NB. Was the target response fairly decent or was it a fainty?

Congrats on your hard-won gold.

Can't go wrong with those nuggets, congrats!

Nice shooting!

WTG Lucky, ya just can't beat fun in the sun with a nice nugget to boot!

I did not attend, but the professor speaks at the Quartzsite Mertal Detector Club meetings on occasion; Erik is very knowledgeable and always has an excellent presentation.

Thanks guys...
Boulder dash: the Zed is extremely awesome.
Mitchel: I mainly detect old worked out nugget patches and so require a detector that responds to more sizes and types of gold nuggets deeper than any detectors used on those patches in the past. Right now that machine is the Minelab GPZ 7000, and I must say the results speak for themselves...the Zed is a keeper in my book. If that makes me a "Zed-waving elitist", then by the gods that's what I am and damn proud of it, too.?
Beatup: I know the feeling; I have to be back to work the first of May.
Rick: As soon as it warms up a bit, I'll be there!

Steve, how do I reformat my signature?

The mighty Zed responded with a faint signal through the wireless speaker this afternoon as I passed the coil over some large surface rocks. The bench gravels had been thoroughly detected in the past, but this nuggets hiding place was finally lit up by the power of ZVT. The water-worn, watermelon seed nugget, my 200th found from the Quartzsite regional placer area this winter, brings the grand total to 4 ounces. Good luck out there!

Happy birthday Lucky, way to hook a nugget! Wonder if it works with marshmallows?
