I'm in Minnesota, and we are STILL detecting here!ย

You folks in the North Star State are a hearty breed!ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I try to detect all Winter too between freezes and thaws. At some point it usually freezes everything hard and many places will stay frozen until the Spring thaw. We've had more early freezes this year though so I just try to get out when I can.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. I agree with JCR, take several good clear photos ofthe stickers before attempting to remove them. Is the sticker paper or plastic? A careful use of a heat gun or hair dryer and some tweezers starting on a corner may do the trick. Just start with the lowest heat setting first to see if there is any release without melting or burning.

If you do get the stickers off or need to mount the photos you'll need to get some photo grade spray adhesive to make it stick to the inside of the lid.

Good dig CPT! You have some very productive sites to hunt. You are the Token killer in my opinion, and I really like that lock plate with the elephant. Those pocket watch backs can occasionally come out of the ground completely saturated with gold gilt.I dug one last year that indeed was, just around that time of evening when it was getting to dark to dig without a light. When It came flying out of the hole I got fooled and went into panic mode for just a second, because it looked enough like a double eagle at first glance to make ones heart pound.ย

Thanks, Doc B! I have just recently started finding old tokens and attribute that to just being on locations that have some still to be found and have been incredibly lucky.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

If I saw a silver dollar sized gold colored object in the dirt like you did, I'd fall over dead before I could get it out of the hole!ย ๐Ÿคฃย

    Very nice hunt!

The sheer amount of interesting things you find per hunt always amazes me

Thank you, Sinclair, but your finds are always amazing to me!ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Wow tons of stuff. Nice hunt. So did you like hunting by tones?

Thank you, sohN! I do like hunting by tones (specially Full Tones) and have been doing that for about a year now. I prefer the remote mounted on the shaft for quick access but I try to not look at it unless the target is iffy. It has really helped me find some interesting stuff, although I'm sure alot of that is pure dumb luck.ย ๐Ÿ˜

That is an interesting site. A very nice variety of finds. @F350Platinumย beat me to the pipe band.

Thank you, JCR! I thought the silver band may have been from a pipe, but all my father's pipes from the 20s-50's were round shafts so it never occured to me that a pipe could have a square shaft.ย ๐Ÿ™„

    Your "Miller" plate is this:il_794xN.3934328190_9tx9.jpg.1732523926a046bf601d4dc577a592f8.jpg

The array of overall buttons and tokens are incredible. ๐Ÿ™‚ Patented 4 hole? Wow.

The Sterling band, depending on it's size might be from a pipe stem, they often carry marks like that.

Cool iron, and I hope the spherical object with grooves isn't alien bone... ๐Ÿค”ย ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

Thank you, F350, you nailed both of those!ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Nice bunch digs CPT! Looks like F350 ID'd that sterling whatsit. Very curious about that grooved object. Do you think it's bone (terrestrial or otherwise) or wood or clay ???

Thanks, Lodge Scent! The grooved object is a little too heavy for bone. It was hand grooved, so I was thinking wood, but it seems a little too heavy for that too. A friend of mine thinks its older hard rubber, but it doesn't bounce or have any "give" to it when trying to dig a thumbnail into it. Maybe it was a ball of some kind made into a yo-yo or used for some type of machine. I don't know.ย ๐Ÿค”ย

  6. I made one more run to a relic permission site last week but didn't get to unpack the finds until yesterday because I was wrangled by the wife to help get the house ready for the Christmas invasion of the kids and their families.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

I wanted to try out an audio only hunting technique brought up by @Lodge Scentย in his post asking "Who Uses the Armband?" referring to taking the Remote off of the shaft and popping it in an armband and hunting by tones. This intrigued me and I wanted to give it a try before the ground froze solid, so I dug my flip-case out of the Deus 2 box and rigged it onto my finds pouch sling.

I was using my D2 with the 11" coil again and the same Fast Full Tones settings I used on my last hunt there in November where I narrowly avoided an alien abduction!ย ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

I fired up the D2 and wasn't three feet from the car when I got a nice solid sounding tone. Without even looking up the ID, I dug out a nice pocket watch back with some fancy scroll work on it. About five feet from there, I hit another nice sounding high tone and out popped a padlock front plate with an elephant and Miller USA on it, circa 1870-1930.

I was determined to not bring a lot of iron home this time, but as I ventured back to the area that I did well at last time, the non-ferrous targets were very very hard to find, so I picked up some iron stuff that was too interesting to pass up. On the right side of the photo with the axehead, bell cover, and miner's lamps, you'll see a spherical object with grooves in it. It's not metallic and too light to be stone, so I think it may be a Native American tool perhaps? IDK

    RS9-9.JPEG

I took a little break for lunch and decided to put the remote back onto the shaft, not because I was having trouble finding targets, but I like to have the program selector and pinpoint button at thumb's reach to help make dig/no dig decisions on the fly. I managed to find some interesting items like a couple of small iron buckles, pocket watch parts, a small drain plug, suspender clip parts (patent 1894), a 2002 quarter and 1967 dime, some lead toys parts, a porcelin doll torso, several overall and shirt buttons, and the finds of the day, a 5 cent Alamo Club Token and a Miner's ID Tag (the town name has been photoshopped out by land owner's request). And the almost tossed out surprise of the day was a square-ish metal band that turn out to have a Sterling stamp with 3 hallmarks on one side! I have no idea what kind of item it is, but it's a silver one! Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

high square full tones. even if pwm is better, i just cant listen to a duck all day.

    audio filter 2ย

offset FT +15 to get a good chirp on them silvers.

    ย

    ย

A friend of mine calls it the dying duck call!ย ๐Ÿคฃ

I don't mind PWM at all. I just think High Square is more pleasing to my ears, but there's more experiments to be done whenever I get a chance to get out again. I will say that High Square has been my goto since it came out though.ย ๐Ÿ˜ย

  8. I went to Hawaii for the first time in September and generally hit Florida once a year as well. Detecting rules vary a bit from island to island, but the general rule is it's okay to hunt public beaches, but stay away from private, state park, and historical site beaches.ย  We went to Oahu and stayed at the Disney Resort and there is no detecting allowed on any of the Ko Olina beaches or properties, so I just hit a few public beaches nearby. Just google metal detecting Hawaii and a buch of useful sites will pop up.

As far as collapsible shafts go, I like SteveG's 3-piece travel shaft for my EQ800. Just contact SteveG here or on his website and ask about the Equinox 600/800 travel shaft. He's a great guy and will hook you up with what ever you need. Just put the pod/controller in your carry-on and stow the coils and shaft parts in your checked bag. Note: pack tools to reassemble after you get there.

I use a CKG travel scoop set up I got from Amazon:

    https://a.co/d/6Of9HaY

They come in a variety of scoop sizes and stow in a checked bag but are a little too big for carry-on.

  9. Coming from Minelandia to the XP universe, I too prefer High SQR audio, but I'm going to do more experimenting.

Since I ran PWM for close to a year to learn the sounds, I like it too.

I set up identical Fast programs next to each other. One has High SQR audio and the other has PWM audio. I hope to be able to learn if one gives more target information than the other and if one falses less than the other with identical settings, coils, and swing speeds. I'll let you know what I find out.ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  10. Well I gave the D2 Flip Case a go on a relic site a couple of days ago and actually liked it. I did pay more attention to the tones and felt like I was doing as well as I normally do, but a few hours into the hunt I ended up mounting the remote back on the shaft.

The main reasons were because it made it quicker and easier to jump between programsย for checking signals and also hitting the pinpoint button to size suspected big targets. I was carrying my shovel in my left hand and swinging the detector with my right, so that meant I had to stop and plant the shovel to open the flip case. Maybe an armband would have worked better in this case, IDK.ย ๐Ÿค”

I could hunt either way, but I just like having those few extra tricks at thumb's length.ย ๐Ÿ˜Žย

  11. I was out on a relic site yesterday and a thought popped into my head while wading through the various levels of decaying iron and other trash. Before the V1.0 update I had been running PWM audio because I thought it was much more expressive than Square audio. After V1.0 to present (V2.0) I have been running High SQR audio because I feel like it as expressive as PWM audio and it sounds better overall to my ears. However after long hours in areas of dense square nails, nail pieces, large iron, and burn pits I was getting some ear fatigue from all the falsing. I tried switching between a couple of programs from my usual Fast relic program to see if there any differences in the response to falsing sounds. I have a Deep HC based program in Pitch audio that I use for coin shooting, but it just made everything sound the same and I couldn't tell iron from non-ferrous from falses without checking the VID. I also have a Sensitive program in Full Tones with PWM audio and when I switched to that I noticed (or percieved) a difference in the falsing tones to the point that it was less fatiguing on my ears.

I know we have discussed many ways to control falsing, but my quest here is do you prefer PWM or High SQR audio and why?ย ๐Ÿค”

  12. I'm not sure why that video was posted here, but it was a fun watch. I get that European metal detectable history is much older that here in the US, specially where I live in Colorado, if that was your point. We just don't have anything that old here, if we did it, those kind of finds would be posted in U.S. youtube videos too, but we rarely find anything older than 1600-1700s on the East and West coasts and mostly 1800s (if we're lucky these days) and later out here in the wild west.ย ๐Ÿ˜Žย

Iโ€™ quickly became a big fan of just listening to the machine with the remote on my belt or pocket in the factory belt/flip case. I considered the arm band but Iโ€™m always switching between programs and settings while investigating a target, and itโ€™s more convenient or possible to do so with one hand free. A glance of target ID can be had with any remote placement, but Iโ€™ve personally deprioritized target ID in favor of full tones or pitch feedback.ย

I am also a big fan of full tones and sometimes pitch. I found my D2 flip case yesterday and I'm going to give that a shot and see how I like it. I think that could be just the ticket.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. That's interesting, Lodge Scent. I have my remote tethered as well, but I like the idea of forcing yourself to listen more carefully to the the audio. I try to hunt by tones, but sometimes I just get lazy and watch the ID too much and when I do that I dig more junk. I may have to try your arm band idea. There are a bunch of different phone arm bands on Amazon that would probably work for the D2 remote. Hmmm... Thanks for the idea!ย ๐Ÿ˜

If only the deus 2 had either a HF coil or even just a small elliptical coil I probably wouldnt consider the deus one at all

I think we're all waiting patiently for that small elliptical D2 coil. I know I have been, but so far I'm doin okay with the 9" and 11" coils and if I get the 11x13" coil for Christmas, I will definitely be able to wait for XP to get the logistics worked out on a 10x5" FMF coil. So I don't feel the need to go to a D1 just to get that coil. Just my 2 cents.ย ๐Ÿ˜

  16. After looking more closely at the folded 5 Cent token I noticed some differences between that and the Alamo Club token, so I took a chance and opened the Taco-Token yesterday. My suspicions were confirmed and it is not from the Alamo Club (only twenty-six 10 cent tokens known to exist counting mineย ๐Ÿ˜‰). It is actually from the Pinon Saloon McGuire Colo, which I could not find in the Pritchard token book or online. It also has a hole through it that looks like it was punched with a square nail.
