Actually without an ID, I'm interested in size and depth. There is a redundancy in that area I would think of small gold remaining and you are right, one of them should be able to separate the gold from trash. If we know it does so on the surface without depth then we know. Knowing is just better in this case.
There are other comparisons of interest also.

Is there a thread here that compares these two? I'm just thinking about the small gold comparison with the M8. I think Simon is new to both of them if he has an M8. He was comparing the Manticore to the 800 and some others. Does Norvic have a Manticore?

Norvic,
There may be a better thread for this but how does the 1500 and coils compare to the modded 2300 you made?

Norvic,
Which are you ... easy, clever or good? haha
I know you are good. Your results prove that.
I know you are clever. You find the good in each of the new detectors you try.
I don't know if you are easy on the manufacturers, but I know they pay attention to what you say. I pay attention. You make yourself easy to understand.
So, you are all three in my book.

Pensacola, Florida has much prettier beaches.
All the way from Pensacola to Panama City are some of the whitest sand beaches anywhere. When you get into the Big Bend the beaches are not so good until you get near Tampa. Sarasota is nice! Ft. Myers and a few beaches down that way are about it until you get down to the Keys. The East Coast of Florida is a different animal with hundreds of beaches.

Well done. Thank you for the report and I do think you are on the final frontier unless you find a ship wreck.

I wish you peace and health and memorable swings where you are detecting now and when you are ready, come back, tell us what you've found.

Do you ever use Historic Aerials website to look at where you are going?
Most of the time not but I do know people who go to parks or open fields who do that before they detect. It saves them time and increases the take of older coins.

Here is a collection of early California pictures. I've been to many of these places but didn't know what was there before.

Is no one planning combining some metal detecting along with their eclipse viewing? Lots of good detecting in the USA Southwest....
My original plan was to go to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas but they made it very difficult to make reservations and I cancelled those plans.

Buy your glasses soon- they sell out fast and unfortunately the price gouging has already started.
I was in Idaho for the 2017 eclipse and it was wonderful. Better in person than on television for sure, everyone should see at least one in their lifetime! So this one will be number three for us including the annular eclipse that passed through Utah a couple years ago. We are going to be west of Waco on a friend’s ranch for it- and have the week off for spring break to take our time coming home. Will be traveling through New Mexico and AZ and hopefully will have some time to use the detectors along the way home too.
I used a Baader solar filter on my lens for the three bright solar images I took leading up to totality, if you zoom close, you can see sun spots on the sun. No filter was necessary on my camera nor to look at it directly during totality on the last photo to the left.
Those are great. I didn't get very good shots with my big camera.
Where can I get a quick lesson online?

I've seen a total solar eclipse in Wyoming, and it is worth seeing again since it will only be about 3 days away in Texas. I've made plans to stay in Carlsbad, NM after I go to Deming. They have a great museum there. I hope it is open.
When we leave Carlsbad then I'll go to Eastland, TX for a couple of nights and see the eclipse somewhere between Gatesville and Hillsboro. We may take in the Dinosaur State Park depending on the traffic. Getting back to California may be a chore but we'll see what people are doing. I don't have to be anywhere too soon after that because I've taken my son out of school for this and another trip to follow.
Where will any of you watch? You have any pointers for me?

As for the cannonball, I went back there yesterday and carefully measured and weighed it, turns out it is a "12 pounder", 4.5 inches in diameter and actually 12 pounds. I still left it there, I'm waiting for the rain to clean it up a bit more, don't want to handle it too much just yet. 😬 Still looking for a fuse of some type, there are some protrusions that may be dirt, but brushing it with a steel brush wouldn't be such a good idea 🤔
Very nice find and once cleaned up it will provide more clues.
When I grew up in North Florida someone had found a canon ball and we just kept it around. Military people said it was solid but I don't know. I was never aware of where it had come from as far as a lot near where we lived or if it had been stolen from a display in St. Augustine. I think it was too pitted for that. I think it is over 12 lbs and might be 16 and it is larger than yours which increases the possibility it could have gone boom over the years.
You may want to consider some of the chemical treatments for yours. I used some of it for the good. Here is a link to one that might save you some scraping and brushing and see more of what you've got.

That is very nice!
I lived on Maui for acouple of years back in 79-80. I wish I would have had a metal detector then!
How long was your vacation and how many hours did you manage to get detecting?

I feel sad for the folks who unknowingly detect behind his gold source.
Yes, most of the clues are missing if you follow Lunk! But ... he even goes back behind himself and finds gold so it is a lesson to us all. He has been taking gold off the same patches for years. Maybe not the same 10 foot area he cleared but near.

You have captured a response that most don't get. Thank you.

Many years ago I asked on several different forums what do deep nuggets sound like. Audio was hard to capture then. I didn't know to listen to the 'broad' sound and could only hear the sharp nuggets. I didn't do the proper amount of 'limit' testing you are showing here. I didn't take the time to bury nuggets out of range. I'm sure my detectors saw targets and I passed right over them. Beach sounds aren't quite the same at depth.

You have two hats on ... a Gerry's trainer and ... Arizona gold seeker in the winter.
That is a nice gold picture.

I had a chance in 2010 to buy the best detector, a 5000 and start doing something I'd never done before. I started going out into the desert looking for gold. To say I didn't know much about it would be an understatement. I did think I could get the best detector and I would find things easily. That is not what happened.
The detector was fine but I didn't know where to use it and what to listen for. About a year later I found my first nugget in a tailing pile. That somewhat satisfied the where part but I still had a problem with the what to listen for stuff. I couldn't hear gold and I couldn't hear little meteorites. I wasn't adjusted right.
At this point the ability to think and perform a bit outside of the box became worthwhile. I got lucky with finding a nice nugget in a non-nugget location. I kept that in mind and when I upgraded my coil I went back to that same area and I got 'lucky' again with another larger nugget. Upgrading to the 7000 was not the same type of increase in nugget size. I've mostly gone back to where gold has been found before and sizeable nuggets just are not there.
Enjoy your walk-abouts. Carry a detector and you will find some missed gold but go one canyon over and you might still find a big nugget.

Manticore Vs AlgoForce 1500
in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons

I think we would hear from them if it was rubbish!
They may be the type that are doing quite well with it such as Norvic and they just don't want to give up any advantage by telling someone. It is an advantage to exploit just as a Z, X-coil or other producer.
