The wind can be nasty, especially when it's cold. Nice buttons! That artillery button would've made my year!
Thanks Saker,
I've had quite a few things that have made my year this year 🥳, I think I'm getting to the top of the detecting Bell curve. 🙂 The button was a first for me, but I've seen another found here by Chase. Just depends on who gets their coil over it... 😉

Your buttons are something I don't get a chance to hunt. I found my best button in Australia. I'll have to look it up and post it for someone with more knowledge about such things to tell me about it.
As far as the wind goes, you remined me of a beach hunt from years ago. The northwest wind was blowing cold and hard. Combined with the humidity it would blow right through you. I don't remember what I found.
The next day I went out on a different tide and I saw something in the water. It was a blue jacket from the Santa Monica Pier amusement park. It is made by Port Authority and it was size large. It had blown away during the storm. I still have it and it fits.
If I know the wind is going to blow and I want to stay warm (even to the point of sweating) I grab that jacket for the beach and/or desert. A good pair of gloves, a warm hood over the headphones and I take advantage of the conditions. Stick a rain jacket over all of that and I'll detect a beach but not the desert. I don't want to get caught in a flash flood.
Thanks mn,
There are a few button aficionados on this forum, but we often have to use Lens or other aids for identification. Now and again I'll find a really unique one like this:
And it really knocks me for a loop. Found in a field not too far from my house. 🤔 The heck was that doing there?
We have two classifications for cold, yesterday was just cold. When high humidity is added to the mix it becomes "s**t cold", better to stay indoors. It permeates everything and sticks to you. I've had hypothermia before when I was in the Army, not fun. 😬
Here the weather is usually not too bad, it's more likely to be in the 40s and 50s in winter. I have to keep handwarmers handy because of Reynaud's, I have heated gloves but they put out too much EMI to detect with. 😢

Ripper buttons ! Tough conditions . Well done .
Thanks HJ,
We deal with the windy end of a lot of nor'easters here, a comma shaped storm that sometimes kicks it up to over 70. I have found hundreds of buttons, I think it's my most found item other than modern coins. 🤣 I could probably sell some of them, but I have quite the collection!

Another nice hunt there F350! It's amazing how much misery the wind can bring when you are hunting out in the open. You have some nice pieces there. I always like digging a thimble. That little square bit is intriguing. I have one potential bone to pick with you. Those aren't musket balls in your "trash" pile are they??? You can't be insulting musket balls like that. 😉
I have dug literally hundreds of musket balls over the last 4 years, and probably a thousand buck balls. Unless they are fairly pristine I don't keep them. Pistol balls too.
The little square is interesting, it has some sort of mark stamped in it as well as the circles on both sides, but I can't make much of it.
I think I've found one of these at another spot.
Found it!!!
It's an apothecary or coin weight!
Apparently these have been around since the Byzantine era, mine is from the 16-1700s. 🥳

Maybe time to check that beach again for erosion? You have endless relics it seems as you are still pulling all that metal out of the ground in places you have previously hunted?
strick
It does seem that way, but it's the Law of Large Areas 😉 after a while the return on long walks is pretty small, while these farms are pretty big there are areas with little to no activity ever, this particular one does for sure
We've had quite a bit of wind again, and yes, there are some extreme low tides next week so there may just be a return to the beach hunt. 🤔 Stay tuned. 🙂

That is a very special button, great find. Good thing you've got a little experience water hunting in waves.🌊 Strong winds always reminded me of that. Takes the fun out pretty quick.
Our shovels were whistling, the wind made us stumble on the stubble, and blew our breath right back in. I'm glad we were able to get anything!

Great hunting again, keep it up and stay safe.
Thanks VL,
I'm going to try and be safer by not going out in winds like that, but a promise is a promise. Chase knew when to quit too. 😅

Awesome buttons!
Thanks, I'm pretty sure this is the first 1812 era button for me. This peninsula was invaded in 1814, I'm not sure if there were any local artillery units, but they came up the river right behind my house, about 3,000 strong. 😬

Today was probably the most brutal hunt I can think of so far. Today looked good about a week ago when I was talking to Chase, so we decided to do some hunting on a permission we've been to before, he stopped there on his way to another detecting event.
I got out there early, it rained a bit on the way, and the weather had changed quite a bit, from initially a nice day in the 50s, to a cold day with winds near 50mph. At first the wind had stopped completely, last night we lost power it was so bad. I was happy to see that it was still in the low 40s and thought we might have a day more like we expected.
Well that didn't happen. The sun came out but as it did the wind picked up, and as the day wore on the temperature dropped. I think it was about 37 by the time we got sick of the wind hammering us.
Pretty much all we got today was buttons, but some good ones. Finding really old Tombacs is always a good thing for me anyway.
I ended up with 7, and the smallest thimble I've ever found. Got a corset hook, a buckle bit, and some of device that looks like a very old rank insignia, but I really don't know. I also have no clue what the little square with the "eyes" is.
We've been over the spots we were hunting today, I brought my WS6 Master rig with the 9" coil to see if I could scratch out some more stuff, and was pleased with the result. I ran Relic at 40 kHz max to catch the small stuff and anything that might be on edge. Almost everything I got was small. 😅
Best find was an 1814-1821 artillery button, first one I've ever found. It seems to be Tombac, not brass:
Here's a sidelight for detail:
And here is what it would look like if it wasn't dug in my acidic soil:
Trash was about right for this place:
I brought the root back because it had a BB embedded in it, I thought that was funny. It took a long time to find it. 🤪
I don't think I'll be going out in the wind much like that anymore. 😵

No doubt about it ! Everything lines up just right in the comparison pics . Double congrats !!!
I was looking through some reference books and websites about Spanish silver, then thought I might have found one before, and I was right. 🤔
I found both of these in another spot this year.
I'm guessing you could get a permission near the places Australia was colonized and find some oldies, but those places are probably protected historically, or built up. 🤔
I just happen to live where America was first discovered and colonized by the British, and it hasn't changed much.

Congrats on retrieving another relic haul , and from frozen soil too ! The Reale must give you a great sense of satisfaction . Hard work does give rewards in metal detecting . Your other silver item looks very interesting . It will be interesting to see what you can find out about it . Spanish silver not really a possibility here , so as I view yours I am turning a shade of green !
Thanks HJ,
I did sort of have to think out of the box this time, I searched the most difficult spot of the farm. I was surprised that I found much at all!
I'm pretty sure that that the "pistareen" is cut from a Philip V one real:
Or at least cut out of the lower third. Could be a later coin as well, but this one comes close. 🙂 It took a lot of research and flipping the piece around, but I think I got it!
Close enough, anyway.

Nice work 350..it has been fun to watch you evolve from newbie to a highly skilled detectorist on this site. Thanks for posting your cool finds.

Thanks strick,
I thought of thanking everyone by name in my Thanksgiving post, but then got "scairt" that I'd forget someone so I did the "here now" version. 😅
I'm very fortunate to live where I do for sure.
So many people on this forum have helped me become better at detecting. You're one of them. 👍
So should I stop now? 🤣 All I hope to do overall is inspire others to get out there, even if the weather sucks. 🥶 Seeing finds is believing that these cell phones on a stick work.

Another great hunt in this weather with some nice finds.
I wish you the best of luck on your hunts and stay safe out there.
Thanks VL,
Next week should be warmer, a cold snap like this one is common. I hope we have as mild a winter as last year overall, it gets kinda painful when my hands go cold. 😵

Congrats on that reale and great buttons!
Thanks 1491!
This house was originally built in the 1780s. There should be some Spanish coins there, the people were fairly affluent, and Spanish silver was used until the 1850s here. 🤔 Because I'm finding it in more remote or difficult areas, that tells me this place was detected previously. Another clue is the IDs I'm getting in the lawn, mostly aluminum and construction material.
Subsequent owners were even more wealthy. One was in the Civil war, but I haven't found any evidence of that yet.
Hopefully I'll find more cool stuff. 🍀

Outstanding hunt F350! I was surprised to see the 9" coil in use. With those results, you might have to use that coil more often. 😉 It's always nice to dig a Spanish silver, never mind 2. Nice relics too!
Lodge.
Thanks Lodge,
I brought the 9" to hunt in beans left behind and in the erosion fissures, it's also easier to get it into the woods next to the field. I can't go far in, it's pretty impenetrable.
I went over some ground I had been over with the 13" but did not find anything new there. Guess I covered it fairly well. 🤔
There is another place that is a spot where a barn was, the beans weren't cut too close there, so I may use it again.
I recall a logical argument for using the large elliptical over the small coil, technique has a lot to do with it too. I really find the 11x13 is much more accurate ID-wise than the 9", but I do like the precision of the 9" for digging. 🙂 Just not in an open 50 acre field 😬
I'll like the new smaller elliptical much more, I'm sure 😎

I had a lot of stuff to do around the house for the last 6 days, couldn't wait to get out to the old house again, despite how cold it was today. It started out at 32 degrees, and ended up at 38. 🥶 I have Reynaud's in my hands and feet, so I brought two handwarmers and kept them in my vest. I sure needed them, as most of my hunting was in the shade.
I was in the shade of the treeline in the distance.
Where it was darker the ground was frozen about an inch down, so it wasn't too bad. I just had to break through it in spots. Today I had the WS6 Master with the 9" coil. My goal was to search places I had not looked, there is a lot of erosion where I was today. Lots of large and deep fissures that were difficult to hunt.
It ended up being a really good day, I got a find I have been hoping to get for a long time now 🥳. Trash was the usual stuff:
Lots of busted brass and copper, buck and musket balls, some harmonica bits.
Here are the large finds, one is a broken rein guide, one might be a barrel tap plug, and I have no idea what the center item is:
And now the finds, a lot of really old stuff. 3 Tombacs, brass buttons, plates and horse tack. A large buckle in 3 pieces, a pin with threads on it. The thing above the big buckle has a hole on either end, I'm guessing some sort of handle.
At the edge of the field I got a solid 88, and dug my find of the day:
A 1776 silver 1 Real coin minted in Mexico.
This is a first for me, to find one of the larger Reales in such great shape without a hole!
I also found what I think is a pistareen:
It's silver, about the size of the Real:
It is marked with suspiciously Spanish symbols on both sides.
Despite the cold it was a great day!

What is the difference between notch and discrimination with the Deus II? For example… if I set my discrimination to “0” and my Notch to “50” will I get the same result as setting my Notch to “0” and my discrimination to “50”?
Hey MV,
Based on what you wrote above, no.
If you set a single number in notch as opposed to a range, you are blocking (ignoring) only that number. You can set ranges.
If you set discrimination to 50 you ignore every target that has an ID of and below 50.
In Relic I generally set notch to 00-00, but otherwise I don't use it. Relic uses Disc IAR, so I set that to 5.
In my beach program I have disc at 0 and no notch at all.

I've been on the forum for almost 4 years now, and have been in contact with many people, I have met a couple as well. Thanksgiving has passed, but I got something from a forum member today that inspired me to write this, it might be kinda silly to y'all, but it means a lot to me. 😅
I was invited to join a group of forum members a few years ago, they wanted me to check out Tesoro detectors, which I did, I wanted a Tejon but couldn't get one for a decent price so I bought a Vaquero. I have to say after using the Equinox 600 and the Deus 2, it still has certain advantages, and showed me the "old stuff" still has merit.
I talk to these gentlemen via text almost daily, we share hunt finds and other crazy stuff, for me living in a remote area it's like having a gang in your pocket. They're brilliant and funny guys, and they have many years of detecting experience over me. They have helped me identify finds, and one in particular, @dogodog, (Jamie) has identified many coins for me or at least pointed me in the right direction, from a 1640 William and Mary Twopence, to a 1773 Virginia Halfpenny and a 1607 King James I sixpence. He is still employed, and now and again while at work picks up on what we are doing for the day, two of us are retired and the fourth has his own business.
When I find silver or gold, I often text everyone this photo and wait until someone asks "what did you get?"
It's "King Bob" of Minion fame. I also send it to my wife so she knows I'm going to take her out for dinner somewhere, or bring home takeout. Now and again it's for a ring or jewelry, that's always fun. Happy wife, happy life. 🙂
I met and hunted with Jamie back in 2022, we had a blast at Virginia Beach, somewhere here there's an article about it. It kinda feels like I've known him all my life. I guess if you communicate with someone daily, it seems that way.
About a week or so ago we were talking about electrolysis for cleaning coins, and he mentioned he would build me a kit and send it. I've got some Barbers and other silver objects that are black, and want to try it out.
So today I get this box from UPS, and this kit was inside:
A very creative and well made kit, a nice glass quart jar, a stainless spoon and bar of aluminum anode to choose from, and a 5v DC power supply. Wow. I've seen some of the things Jamie makes in his shop(s) and they would knock your socks off, from cabinetry to Holiday decorations. I'm not worthy, man! 😅
Jamie and my other buddy @kac are literal creative geniuses, Ken sent me two of his fantastic diggers. @Joe D.,(Rich) rounds out the crew, he's quite the DIY guy, always has creative suggestions. I guess I'm the "fiddler", I come up with creative ways to dig myself out of a hole. 😏
Well there was another box in the box, kind of a joke gift, but in it was no joke:
We always kid each other about chasing unicorns and rainbows (and other associated meanings), I kinda dreaded this one. 🙄
But it was the coolest thing I could imagine, future generations will be scratching their heads, but the joke will be on them too:
A hand made bell jar display with King Bob, a Deus 2 with a button coil, a Predator Ranger shovel, and various artifacts including a 1960 Roosevelt dime - he was always laughing at me for not finding one, he has over 100 - my birth year. The gold chain is from the real gold chain he got when we met up at VA Beach. He nailed that chain with his Nox 800, and my D2 at the time couldn't even "see" it. 😵 Notice King Bob is sporting a pistol, I often have one on me in a chest holster when hunting. No better caricature could have been created!
There is no way in hell I could ever repay a gift like this other than to remain loyal to a great friend, perhaps a thought will pop into my head someday.
I have a lot to be thankful for, including @Chase Goldman, who has helped me understand the ins and outs of my detectors, and hunts with me often. He has been with me from the start.
This is all due to this forum. 🍀 Thanks @Steve Herschbach!

I mentioned this shaft back in 2021:
I was considering it for my Equinox 600, but then SteveG came out with a CF camo shaft, and it was all over 🥰
Kellyco doesn't seem to have it anymore, so I would use Chase's link. 🤔

I wonder if it will require a new update to be utilized.
I did hear something to that effect on the interview that hinted at it a few months ago.
There are some improvements that wouldn't hurt, like getting lead out of the coin range (which might be difficult), allowing all audio types possible through the bone conduction headphones, but it's been working great for me both at the beach and in the fields. Radical changes might be ill-advised, but I have no doubt it will be a winner, and should take us to the "next level". 🙂

Again, all very nice & interesting finds. I think there is going to be a lot more to be found there than you may be thinking, even if it has been hunted before. Your dedication & skill level, that excellent D2 machine you swing will find the relics & coins that are not the easy gimmies. Also, I have found it takes me several, several trips to really figure out a big site. It’s all fun.
Thanks JCR,
This last trip pretty much highlighted the best places to look, it will be a matter of going over them a few times from different angles, and I'm hoping to be one of the first that gets that new 9" elliptical announced today.
I still have another new permission related to this one, built by the same family that enlarged this one about 100 years later.
This and with all the other places, it should be a great relic season. 🙂

Brutal Button Hunt
in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Posted
I try to make it a good choice when Chase comes down, we've wiped out a few places so I have to find more, and some are kinda private. He chose this place this time, I didn't think either of us expected it to be as rough as it was. 😵
