The GPX 6000 is basically the implementation of my own wish list, and is for me, just about the perfect nugget detector. All it lacks is ferrous id, and near as I can tell, an adjustable threshold. Some people are going to complain about the general lack of zillions of settings, and already are, but I’m all for simplicity. I’m certain the power is there, so I’m finally good to go again after a couple year hiatus. Lots for me to look forward to and be happy about, so thanks Minelab for the GPX 6000!

EXACTLY.....!!!!   Seems everyone has their panties in a pinch.  I'm very much looking forward to receiving this tector and all the whining about this or that won't make any difference when it finally arrives?  The sob will get here when it gets here!

Hmm, you could be right there, but as the great majority of detectors are purchased for recreation use now opposed to say 30 plus years back in OZ when fortunes were being made by some with them as in Africa now, I suspect MLs OZ and US hype is banking on this recreation trend growing. Time will tell, grab a few Codan Shares just in case.😉

Personally I think 6 big ones will most likely keep the "average joe" out for recreation on the sidelines?  Most the guys here on DP seem to take the "hobby" a little more serious than the "average joe"...?   jmo

  3. The X-1 probe.  Got one on my etrac and after Sunray quit making them they shot up in price when the etrac and explorers were still top of the heap in coin shooters (still way up there imo).  Story I heard was Minelab quit selling the upper shaft to Sunray(?).  There were 2 versions I'm aware of, the short version and the long version (shown above). The used X-1 price after they quit making them was as high as about $300 if you could find one.  Beauty of the pin pointer probe was it ran off of whatever your detector was set at as far as disc or mode, etc..  I always found just using my handheld PP'er was easier and faster than the X-1.  However...the X-1 makes it real fast to swap coils which was always a real PITA at least with the etrac.  Glad I have one when it comes to swapping coils but other than that for my coin shooting style, I'll stick with the handheld PP'er.......   jmo's

  4. One thing never changes.....an ounce of gold is always an ounce of gold.

The way I like to see it is back when gold was say $30-35 an ounce a pickup cost approximately 30 ounces.  Today with gold at $1700-1800 an ounce a pickup costs about 30 ounces.  Nothing has changed except the ever falling value of the phony fake paper bills everybody basis gold "value" against????

    GOLD...the great hedge......   JMO

My success rate getting permission to detect the private ones here in the Rockies? 0%.

On the flip side of what Jasong said above...  Myself and Reese headed out early over near Helena and a snow drift kept us from getting to our location.  Reese was gonna head for home, I wasn't cause I drove over 200mi to get there.  I mentioned to Reese about an area I spied on Google earth loaded with dredge tailings.  He followed me and the 1st farm house I saw we stopped and I said "lets go up and ask for any info, etc. about who owns what, etc."  We go up and knock and after an hour we had 130 acres with half of that in tailings to hunt.  Hubby gets home and informs us he's caretaker for the 900 acres bordering and he may be able to get us permission on that property.  Next day we get the additional 900 acres, at least half of that in tailings.  So 1030acres with one door knock...it can happen.  Good things come to an end....900acres sold and so went our permission....lol

  6. Last season while detecting nuggets in an ancient river gravels area I grabbed a pan full of beautiful red dirt mixed with ancient cobble and sharp bedrock just for the hell of it to see if there was any black sand, colors, or fines????  I've picked many nuggies from surrounding area where this sample came from...MANY!  On the way home I stopped by the creek and panned the sample and not a spec of gold or black sand...nodda!!!!  I did that for my curiosity and also to  inform a geologist as she was curios also...   I was kinda shocked at the no black sand at all as down by the creek I get plenty of black sand when digging/panning there.

Bottom line.....black sand doesn't always show up where gold is found.........and vice-versa

If you are talking about recreational dredges, I dredged for many years on most of the mother lode rivers and the trash you talk about, was rarely evident. Honest. And that was for six full summers of dredging.
If you meant the huge dredges that tore up miles of river bottom, that's a different story I guess.

I was referring to big bucket line dredges.......

So why come out with an ad campaign with tactics designed to appeal to un-sophisticated detectorists.

Just a wild guess on my part....but maybe to increase sales??????

Looks to me like the 6000 might be kinda like an SDC on steroids?  What's not to like about simplicity, lighter weight, better ergonomics, no cords, etc.  Price alone will keep most the "un-sophisticated" or those folks not as serious about the hobby away but if someone wants to jump towards the upper end with a more simple machine and dive right in, I think Minelab probably has a winner here?  I'm old, tired, time is limited and like simplicity and don't care or have time to learn every different timing(s), filters, settings on a gpx5000....that's why I love the SDC and got rid of the 5000.....simplicity, no friggin cords.  IMO there's a broad range of potential customers for this new machine.......

  9. I got my markers today...reason it took so long was they came from the UK and same reason I thought the answering machine message sounded foreign....lol.   Product is everything I thought it would be and I'll most likely half or maybe quarter the discs?

    Sorry for badmouthing the co.

  10. Just wanted to let you guys know that I deleted a link on my "Marking Targets" post.  I'm having trouble with the company where I ordered my colored discs.  Haven't received order yet, no tracking #, emailed twice now and response to 2nd email (sent today) was "we'll get back 7-10 days", called phone # and got a recording from a foreigner I couldn't understand telling me to email.  I just hope none of you have ordered from them.....beware and so sorry.  Getting that bad feeling....I'll update if/when I actually do receive my order?

  11. Almost seems like you just haven't been able to get the coil over some gold?  Can't find it if it's not there. Only thing I can add is do your noise cancel, ground balance, sens on 3-4 (if threshold remains stable), coil as close to soil as possible and nice slow even 3-4 second coil sweep from side to side, dig any/all change in threshold tone.  Persistance, patience, tenacity and get that coil over some gold!!!!!.......(it'll happen)

    good luck

  12. Like the above post, I just wear phones and soldier on.  One area Reese T put me on near the top of Continental Divide in MT. is full of dead lodgepole pine, both standing and blowdown everywhere.  That area is a PITA to hunt because of all the blowdown and the wind blows a lot there. That area is the only time I've cut a hunt short because of wind and went back to the safety of the camper trailer parked in the valley in a huge gravel pit.  The area is 200mi from home, I'm alone, and nobody knows I'm there and the fear of a blowdown hitting you is very high when the wind blows, and it seems to always blow.  The one area where you'd better have a chainsaw with you at all times just to be able to get up or off the mtn should a blowdown be acrossed the road/trail.....and not on your head(dead).....

  13. Chris...  Done it that way myself but on a smaller scale so to speak?  Start with SDC and locate a target, quick 2" scrape to help with the follow up chase with the Goldmonster.....  BUT, I've also had some trouble locating the scrape(s) a few times also.  So now it's find target, scrape a few inches, toss disc on ground, once I locate 10 targets, go fetch the Monster and run em down picking up disc as I go along and putting them back in the pouch. Wash, rinse, repeat on the next 10.  I'm the laziest of the lazies!  I really think it cuts down on my recovery time overall by basically chasing/PPing with the Monster....????
