  1. 1 of the best recovery stories I've read here ! Looks like you dug about 12". And that is the semi-crazy reason I had for rototilling the yard. Many others besides the depth : iron , Mom's grass , broken ring , etc. Nice yard and you dug alot over the years. So I can see why you didn't want to butcher it. But my initial thoughts were correct in that it was deep after 40 years. So happy for you that you found it. Btw - I will give you a bit more than $20 if you decide to sell..🤣

Nice work there Kob! Congrats on the gold & other goodies😁..I hit a spot for a few days during the recent high wind/high surf event, ended up with 4 gold and some silver. Loads of targets, the clad was driving me nuts so switched over to tone mode to weed out the clad and just target the gold signals, was very fun indeed!

You mentioned having to turn your head so you could hear due to the wind, does your head phones have weep holes? If so you might want to put some tape over the holes If you haven't already.. My AQ headphones have weep holes, I put tape over them and it helped keep the noise out during high winds..

I don't mind digging lots of clad after many of the crappy hunts I've had. If there's clad , there usually is jewelry. It's been ingrained in me to expect gold , but am often disappointed. I went out last night in Diego for 1.25 hours. Looked good but only 4 targets ! Ugh..

Covering the weep holes are no good. I need new ear pads....wait...I need a new detector ! 2 companies I been looking at are putting on a major jerk show. I typically wear shorts and a long sleeved tshirt. Unless it's really cold , like below 50° ! Then I wear pants and a hooded jacket over my headphones. Otherwise I get too hot and sweat.

Love the Gold with Diamonds! One of my favorite wedding band design.

You find a lot of sun glasses?

Those literally washed up while I was digging a target. Summertime I find quite a few. I'm paying more attention to them over the last couple of years as some that look like junk are actually name brand high ticket items.

  4. This is a crazy options for obvious reasons ( damage/cost) but it is an option...It's a relatively small area , but also lost 40 years ago , so could be deep. Rent a portable roto-tiller and churn that yard up ! Turning that soil over 4" or so could be the difference. That's the easy part..... GL finding your ring.

  5. Finally had some fun hunts. 3 straight days , 5 hours each hunt. Winds/surf/tides were in full effect. Hit it while it's occurring guys , not a day or 2 after. Ride the high tide out. Timing is critical as it started to fill in each passing day. The wind was howling so much that I had to turn my ear sideways into the wind to be able to hear. Targets were bleeding/washing out the 1st day , then I had to dig deeper. Oddities : quarters were up high , dimes down low. Jewelry was all low. Nothing in the flats , all on the slope. Over 3 days I only dug 2 pulltabs and NO bottlecaps ! A 1st for me. There was an ungodly amount of tent stakes and iron.

About 10 rings. 4 pieces have real diamonds. The David Yurman 925 diamond initial pendant goes for $300-350 new. Small silver diamond ring has a TC stamp , don't know if that's for Tiffany. Nice tungsten diamond ring and 10k diamond ring and 18k band. It was nonstop digging. Nice to not walk for miles on end. About $16 in clad. Most of the trash I tossed. GL & HH...

Maybe I did word that wrong, it should have said Some of the Best hunters in the USA... , but in my short span of 14 years of beach hunting I can't tell you how many hunters I have ran into boasted about there finds. For them I always say..., Prove it "I'm from Missouri" .........  that's when I get my chuckle..

But you are correct, I am sure there are "A FEW" other Good hunters out there that are happy with finding gold and not telling anyone. What's that saying about 95% of the gold is found by the same hunters each year?

One thing for sure, I'm out of the ranks this year..😬

There are more than a "few" for certain. It's kinda like being a criminal mastermind. You always here about the one's who get caught. Never about the one's who pulled it off and got away. Like D.B Cooper ! Probably 1 regret I do have is not taking pictures of finds way back when so I can re-live it. Most are in memory , but some are lost as I age.

I love Terry, Very Good guy and a Great speaker!........... I remember him on the Treasuredepot years ago on the "Ring Daddy" page. He was in the top 5 for 3 years....{marked in red} ...The Depot always had the top gun hunters in the USA, I started watching the site around 2010 .. I posted over there a few times then someone told me it was for the Pro Hunters.. so I just watched for few years .........Then I let them have it.. OBN..

There is NO way The Depot always had the top hunters in the USA post on their site. Many didn't know about it /or wouldn't want to post on it. I myself only knew of this site just a few years ago. I remember showing a friend this "Ring Daddy" thing and looking at some of these totals. We both would say : That's all they found for the year ? We would get a good chuckle. But it was an interesting site to see what other guys found in other parts of the country.

My guess for a name came from seeing the name Eclipse mentioned above.  I think a good name would be Dark Side Of The Moon!   Any Pink Floyd fans out there?😁   Then, when we buy one, we can say we’ve gone over to the dark side!

As long as it doesn't turn out to be Another brick in the wall.

  9. You guys are all talking about machines for a beginning hunter assuming they are a hunter to begin with ! We take this for granted. But I degress to the beginning my friends...

2 months ago , I'm on the beach and here comes this woman and daughter with a Vanquish. She watched my for a few minutes on the beach slope digging coins , then I watched her. This gal was out of shape , obese. But kudos for trying. She could not physically walk and swing from side to side her detector ! Could only walk with the coil straight ahead , about 10" off the ground. I've never seen this before. My 4 minutes of helping her was not going to do anything.

So , my advice to anyone starting out is to watch others , videos , etc. To see if you are even capable of metal detecting. I'm sure this was an anomaly but before you spend any $ on a detector , make sure you are physically capable 1st. There are injuries that most of us have had detecting , some serious...and most of us here know what were doing. But rookies.......

  10. Wow ! I feel like somebody does love me out there ! Just like Steve and a few others have said , they are listening and want to get it right. Not wanting to push out an inferior product before it's ready. Unlike some other manufacturers who disappear down a rabbit hole and don't say a word. This my friends , I can deal with.

The thing about Nokta/Makro is they are always moving. In fact moving so much that people were complaining about too many new models too fast! Like, when does that happen in metal detector land? Sure, some were just variations on a theme, but they have never lacked for trying new stuff that nobody else does. Things like the vibrate mode may seem a joke to some, but not to the number of hearing challenged detectorists out there. Yes, there are totally deaf people who metal detect. I think it’s awesome somebody thought about them, even if they are few in number.

When I reviewed the Nokta FORS Gold in 2014, almost nobody had ever heard of this company. Yet anyone reading that review will see they immediately won me over, and I predicted big things for them. The main thing was they were responsive, and fixed things that I mentioned needed fixing immediately. I was used to U.S. manufacturers just putting a new machine to bed, and any issues always were “too late now”. Not these folks. They would stop the production line and implement changes immediately, on the fly, in a way I’ve never seen before or since. Sometimes a model gets released too early, like the Simplex, but they don’t just give it a pass. They take any feedback, make improvements, and make good on any genuine customer complaints that arise due to any oversights on their part.

They are not perfect, no, but who is? The thing is they try and just keep on swinging. From a company nobody heard of in 2014, to a major contender now, nipping at the heels of the top dogs. If they get a good multi and a good PI to market in the next couple years, they will finally pull up neck and neck with First Texas and Garrett. Garrett only just got a multi to market, and while it’s a start, nobody is being blown away. The ATX is decent, but too heavy by a couple pounds at least. First Texas has a 25 year old multi, and is fumbling their PI intro, so neither of these old line companies have a lot to brag about in the multi and PI department. Nokta/Makro has a good shot at pulling up even or even exceeding both these old line companies.

Minelab has a massive head start in both multi and PI, and due to various patents I don’t think it is very realistic that NM will outperform them per se. But they do not have to. They simply have to get in the ballpark, and with PI in particular, at a much lower price than the sky-high Minelabs. Not everyone loves Minelab, and many would buy something else just to buy something else, as long as it is decent. Minelab may be top dog right now, but it’s anyone’s bet who is going to be in second place in 2-3 years. I’m sure not counting this scrappy little company from Turkey out. They are hungry, and in business, that’s half the battle.

Ok. Now you got me all jacked up again !

  12. I feel your pain , not quite as severe though. I've got many different water shoes/boots/socks. The sand eats my feet up too. I switch between them often and many times go barefoot , but I know that's not good. Even though it toughens up my feet.

I have spent probably $700 on all sorts of inserts , etc. And what is wild is one of the cheapest works the best for me. They are Walk-Fits. About $20 and it fits under the heel and has an aggressive arch. Also has a few different arch pads included that can adjust the height for you comfort. I slide one under my foot , then a thin ankle high neoprene or lycra sock over it. Then I slide my foot into my ankle high , zippered , hard soled , dive boot. Works for me. GL...

Our cup running over with VLF gold detectors .

When one says their detector is better than the next guys I say talk is cheap .

I don’t care if it’s called Lightning are any other name they wish but it’s a long time coming. I know it’s important to get it right the first time but time is running out.

I still wish Nokta Makro the best on the multi frequency detector but I do hope to see it this year .

It would be great if they had a great PI detector going to hit the market soon.

You are freaking out my friend ! I think I saw Dileks spiel on treasure talk back in July. I was under the false hope from the March interview that it was about ready. Expecting to see it in July. Wrong again KOB. So , then they say the next show is in October. And for what ? For her to give us some lame excuses why it's not here again. I sure hope not , as I TRY to remain positive. But after awile...NOBODY likes to be jerked around. As for the PI , my guess is that it's 2-3 years off. Knowing now the jerk game.....

I have never broken any Nox ears after owning and using five of them and I have used them in saltwater surf. I did break the ears on a CTX 3030 similar sized coil to the Nox stock coil. The CTX coils are very similar in outer design to the Nox coils, especially the coil ears.

I did break the coil ears on a Nokta Makro Gold Racer too.

At least the Simplex ears are very sturdy in appearance and I have not broken them either.

Well...I will add that a big part of how mine broke were my fault , after the fact. Regardless , it should still have never happened if they were built stronger. I swung the 15" at an angle on the lower slope that was also angled into hard sand. But I also remember that morning when I adjusted the coil nut too tight. The ears were pinched in a tad. Didn't think much of it at the time because I prefer a stationary coil. Not one that flips up all over the place. I am in and out of the water often on all my hunts.

What the photo does show is a center mounted coil. As Dilek said in her March 2021 interview, the coil will be different from the Simplex and this new detector will have a carbon fiber lower shaft. The Simplex coils including the stock coil are not center mounted.

I sure hope the ears are super strong. In all my detecting life , I've never broken coil ears before....Except the Nox...

One dealing with this new detector will be holding the power that man has yet to be known until now.
When one extends their hand out and warp their fingers around the handle of this detector called the Lightning will feel the power surge up their arm like no other before it .

You try to guess what the Lightning will have to offer each of you but until you release mind and let it wonder beyond your normal existence you can’t visualize the power the Lightning has to offer you.

The Lightning is like no other before it because if it was it wouldn’t be no more than another detector.

So dream now and wonder if you may but you will be seeing your dreams come true in a very short time.

     Chuck

I can see the vision now. Upon finding your target on the beach with your lightning fast tasmanian devil swing , you suddenly stop. You active the lightning pinpoint feature , where an electrical bolt of light locks on 3' deep.

Then you activate your lightning sand pump feature ( pat.pending). A 1.5" cover on the bottom of the coil slides open , activating the suction pump that draws sand up through the center of the shaft and is exhausted out a hole just below the elbow.

Watch through the qled vdi full color screen as your gold ring is being sucked up through the lightning sand pump , which automatically stops when your target reaches the coil. Yes ! It's true , no scoop needed , no more digging ! Use your optional lightning L-shape exhaust attachment to automatically fill your holes as you suck your targets up !!! Yes !...your dream has come true....

  17. What others have said is on point. The Nox 800 will serve you well as long as you don't constantly dunk it. I am a gold jewelry hunter in So.Cal for decades. I come from an era where we talked about how many ounces did you find or how many pounds this year. Not how many rings or pieces of gold were found. Well guess what ? Those days are pretty much long gone. My point is to be persistent and have a positive attitude. Not to give up. I don't know your rivers , streams , areas , etc. But you must be willing to travel if your favorite close beach is not producing. I may drive 3 or 4 hours hitting 7 or 8 beaches just to walk for 5 miles and strikeout on gold. But I always remain positive that the next beach will produce. Stay mentally tough and good things will happen for you. GL on your journey !

    Mike,

I use the 800/15 just about all the time on the beach any more.  I use no discrimination in Beach 1 at 23 sensitivity.  I've learned that deep targets at first can often be a negative number.  I use 50 tones mostly but I have been known to go down to 5.  I stick with that even in very wet sand but I do have another setting I took from King of Bling which is Beach 2 and 2 tone which I crank up to 25.  I can walk faster with that one.  The other one I have to listen for low tones which I have increased my iron tones to 10 ... maybe I should increase that volume even more.

    Mitchel

Well...well...well....TY ! 1st off = great hunt on the ring. Plenty of man made stones are worth some bucks. Close to 2 years ago I think I posted that I was getting gold on my 800/15" that were deep AND running in the negatives. Which of course 99% of the guys at the time would not dig. And many just didn't believe me ! After a few scoops or getting them out of the sand , they would read a good solid positive #. The beach 2 , 2 tone has been the ticket for me. But I will experiment with recovery speeds depending on the available targets and how much ground I want to cover. I start high , then back it down to a 3 and go real slow. It is not easy swinging the 15" SLOW and you need to be on high alert ! I also may use a #7 threshold. This might help a few hardcore pro's out there. Again , great find.
