    You didn't give your location.

Yes I am back home in Illinois, about 50 miles south of Springfield.

I will agree that the sound was strange.

I think their distances can be deceiving though, it was probably very high up and looked like it was falling locally but was merely following the curvature of the Earth as it fell while still traveling away from you.

Well it did hit within a close distance to me, less than 3 miles to be exact. It went through a barn and landed in a field intact.

Hope you are able to get a chance to hunt for some fragments, if you can.

I found out the farmer who owns the property that it landed on is going to keep it, and I have asked if I could see if there are any more pieces of it in the area.

A local farmer found the rock when he went out to his wood barn and noticed a hole going through his roof.

He later found another hole in the ground almost 2 foot deep and uncovered the meteorite.

I looked at the rock and it had a hole in it about the size of a pencil all the way through it. It weighed around 11 pounds according to the farmer and it is some what smooth on one side.

I am hoping to be able to get a picture of it so everyone can see it.

    Thanks for all the responses.

  2. I have a question about something that happened to me last night/early morning.

It was around 3:30am when I went out for a smoke and heard a loud roar in the sky, as I turned to see what it was, there was a bright white light traveling from the North East towards the South West. The object looked to be about 500 to 600 feet in the sky on a downward slope. I have never heard anything like it before and would like to know if someone else here has ever heard something like this before. I could hear no impact and I could tell that the light was getting brighter the closer to the ground sa it passed over me. The whole time seeing this was no more than 3-4 seconds, but the sound I don't think I will ever forget.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated to see if anyone else has ever had this happen to them.

    Thank you, Caleb

  3. Looks to be a holographic item from the 1960's when they were given as a prize, the image reminds me of Lincoln and if so it could be part of the presidential collection. The presidential collection was found I a box of candy and was really hard to find more than 10 different ones in your area. They were collectable for a very short time. as they never had all the presidents in most of the areas.

I hope that you find out exactly what it is, but if to much water starts to unravel the item I'm sure it is only foil coated on the main body and edges, with the hologram glued to it.

With the high USD I'm really surprised Minelab are trying to cash in on the US market.

Maybe the chompers were lost by one of these fish, I hear they're in the US waters.

Well I have caught one of these in a lake near me in Illinois.

They only eat grass and moss, but they can scare you when you see their teeth.

I thought the metal in these was gold or platinum. Anyone on here in that field of work?

A lot of that type of work is nickel.

  5. I have said so many times that I will never give up my grandfathers 800 for any reason, as it is the best detector I have seen out there for what I use it for. I don't get much time to go detecting, but when I do go it is with the 800.

I have no idea why a good company would go out on a limb to make a detector that they hope will be better than it's earlier model unless they have no other idea on what to do to make it better.

  6. Congrats on such a good hunt again, and I hope you keep getting permissions like those that you have already.

Good luck and good hunting on your next outing.

I finally made it back to Illinois on Saturday and am hoping that I can get in a couple of hunts before the end of the year. I have a beach that people want me to hit to find some items that was lost from several people.

    Stay warm and stay safe.

  7. I have used a form of sand paper from a auto parts store that is made from the same material as a pot scrubber . It is 600-800 grit and then I sat them in the sluice in such a way that it traps more flour gold.. I like the felt however I don't know how long it will hold up. What I described is what most auto body people use to sand down areas on cars to ready them for painting, but they do trap almost everything gold.

Great that you are able to save as much as you are doing, and I like to hear of new ways to do something differently.

    Good luck and stay warm.

  8. I recently got back to Illinois and found more EMI than there used to be when I went to an area I have hunted before.

I turned off the bluetooth  on my 800 and it did help a lot, I really can't understand why but you may want to try it.

I do know that power lines for homes and buildings are now using smart meters and the power companies are placing wifi units about 3/4 mile apart from each other. Most of them are a square box with an antenna on the bottom side, or a square box with 2 antennas on top of it.

    Good luck.

My new forty something girlfriend and just learning to detect partner asked me for a pair of this brand of kneepads for Christmas.

Nah, I told my girlfriend that there is plenty of carpet in the bedroom. She then explained that was the reason she wanted the pads. I'm bad so I guess she gets the knee pads.

If you really want comfortable knee pads with super protection look to sports that rely on them, rollerblading/skateboarding knee pads are super comfortable and designed for high impact

I wasn't thinking along those lines and I believe that you are right.
