I think you're on the right track Wiggins, the double-sided tape idea isn't ideal, it is better to use adhesive Velcro, this way we can stick the Velcro onto various detectors so we can move the device around, seeing they weigh nothing the Velcro is plenty strong enough for the task and something I already do with a transmitter.  People may be concerned putting a magnet near their control box of the detector in case it has detrimental effects.

Indeed, with many detectors different where you need to mount transmitters it is generally best to have a female socket on the transmitter to allow various length cords while supplying a standard short cord something like 10cm would be typical.

This is a similar product that was made for metal detecting, it has volume control on the receiver, and a transmitter that you use supplied adhesive Velcro to stick onto your detector, and they give you multiple Velcro stickers so you can put them on various detectors with the transmitter having it's Velcro fixed.  It uses 2.4 GHz.  The receiver is designed to plug into headphones so you're still corded with this particular device.  They do another one that has the transmitter and custom 2.4 GHz headphones.  The aim for your improved version is to move onto Bluetooth atpX LL so we can use whatever wireless headphones we choose and just have a transmitter.

Now onto the clip on speaker, this is a great idea and a way you can further enhance it is to have a clip system for those that want to clip it onto their shirt or backpack or wherever but also have a mount so it can be clipped onto the detector and directly plugged in.  If you can do this with at least 12 hours battery life that would be ideal.

Here is an example with the JBL Wind Bluetooth speaker, it has a mount for a bicycle handlebar which incidentally fits perfectly onto most metal detectors shafts.

    JBLWind.jpg.907d6239c417aaf5799955ce9e93e613.jpg

This is the mount, the speaker just slots into it.

    JBLWindpic2.jpg.ac11af814707514754861580dc80c4ed.jpg

The speaker in the mount, it is a water-resistant speaker.

They now have a newer version too.

    jblwind3.jpg.87b8a8ff34bacf57173e56d067dffe64.jpg

So this device could have Bluetooth aptX LL to connect directly to the various detectors that have that built in, and it could also have a 3.5mm female socket to allow it to be plugged directly into detectors for when mounted on their shaft.  This is one of my detectors below with the JBL Wind connected directly with cable to the audio output of the detector, I made a custom right angle cable so the plug didn't stick out.

    IMG_1379.thumb.jpg.3c8ebda19a3aecf6bb8f683dde3b7fff.jpg

    IMG_1378.thumb.jpg.ade55adbcaa0aa5808cc3cbc2fd26428.jpg

The downside to the JBL Wind is battery life is far too short, generally 5-6 hours and it is not low latency which doesn't matter in this case as its cabled in, no point going wireless when it's mounted like that anyway.

So, if your clip-on speaker had an option for a clip, and a bicycle mount like this, it opens it up to more of a market, you'll get the people with bikes wanting to buy it too and have more options for detector users.

The products above can be used for metal detecting, they're not by any means perfect, I hope it helps give you some ideas.

Finally, I really like the upgraded Torus option, this one I must have.

The bike mount is a great idea except I see one issue some of the detectors have odd shaped shafts, one being the Axiom there is nothing round anywhere on that detector to attach that type of bike clamp mount, and the Axiom is only one detector with an odd shaped shaft, but that is a great idea.

a more elongated square type transmitter also would make it easier for placement on a detector somewhere, one shaped like this below would be ideal for placement on most detectors with female 3.5mm jack and RX/TX capabilities, with included volume control

After a couple of days testing the E15000 ,  I think it's pretty close to a sdc 2300 in performance but lighter, way better ergonomics, a lot more coil options and a lot more control with the settings . Not to mention half the price if you have a power bank and own coils.

It folds up as small or possibly smaller than the sdc 2300, so will be ideal for hiking in the mountains or the gray nomads caravanning around the countryside and wanting a quality detector.

The big test is tomorrow as I'll be pitting it against the gpx 6000.              The  E15000 with a 9" round coiltek elite , and the gpx 6000 with a 9" round coiltek goldhawk.  I sort of know what to expect but should be interesting.  4 gold modes on the E15000 compared to 2 on the gpx 6000.🤔

Thanks for all the testing and keeping us all informed on this new E1500

saving my coins for when this becomes available in the U.S, really like the idea that there are coils that can be used on it on the market already, taking notes on the various coils that will work good on the E1500, I thought about picking up some coils now so I have them but, it keeps going through my mind what if it never makes it to the U.S because of UN foreseen circumstances LOL

looking forward to all the testing and comparing you are doing and hopefully a few others soon

A Panasonic 10RP-BTGS10 Bone Conduction headset was purchased from eBay. They have the same volume as the previous bone conduction headset purchased. So it appears that bone conduction cannot overcome age related loss of hearing as well as the Avantree Torus Speakers.🤫

I own and use the Panasonic BTGS10 Bone Conduction headphones, they do connect rite up on My Legend and show the two little LLs when connected, and they have the same issue as every other bone conduction headphone that I have tried,

(there is not enough volume) when using the BTGS10 bone conduction headphones with out putting ear plus in both ears, with earplugs the volume is not to bad and you are able to hear the tones clearly, the problem is I do not personally want to have to put in a pair of earplugs to be able to hear the tones from my detector

The BTGS10s are very good when using them with a cell phone, or a laptop, as far as volume but not when connecting them up to a metal detector, or wireless transmitter.

If someone is willing to wear earplugs along with the BTGS10 Bone Conduction headphones they are not to bad but for me personally wearing earplugs kind of defeats the purpose of why I wanted Bone Conduction headphones in the First place which is being able to stay aware of what is going on around me

Hi everyone, joining you all from South West France. I used to metal detect with an ex partner years ago and want to get back into it.

Hoping for some helpful advice on buying the ideal detector for my needs and looking forward to picking up some great tips as I start out again on a rusty but loved hobby!

Thanks Platinum, I've just looked up the XP Deus II, it looks amazing but even in the sales it's sadly way above my budget.

The Legend is sounding good so far and being lightweight is a big bonus.

With the Budget you set the Deus 2 is way outside that budget at almost three times the cost of the legend, which pretty much has the same capabilities as the Deus 2

Wow thanks, I replied to JCR before I saw your reply.

That's helped a lot, I will do some more research on the other models you mention but glad I'm heading down the right route with the Nokta Legend and the Garrett Apex. The AT Pro is pushing my budget, not impossible but it takes out an option of a pinpointer!!!

Dont take me wrong I am not saying the AT Pro is a bad detector because it is not, for me personally I just never took to the ATP like others did, I have always felt it was a way over hyped detector

I just feel for the same money or less there are way better options in detectors out there than the ATP,

Me for one. I was running a similar ultralow sensitivity while coin detecting in a park with the Axiom.

I would expect it would work better if you did not ground balance it into the 00 00 set point but would use the default GB setting instead, or do as I described in an earlier response to you and get it close without going over the edge. I honestly have not tried 00 00 however as I made an incorrect assumption the machine was crapped out with that indication, so worth a go both ways. But yeah, people for some reason think setting like 1 are put on detectors as placeholders that serve no purpose. If it was never supposed to be run on 1 it would not have that setting. A majority of detectorists (not saying you, just in general) do not seem to understand that the ground determines the gain settings. If you go too high in bad ground the blowback from the ground actually means LESS DEPTH. Reducing the sensitivity and other related settings to appropriate amounts gives BETTER DEPTH. It does not matter what the settings are per se, just that they are just below the tipping point into the blowback situation.

Good to hear it sounds like you are having fun!

I have never understood peoples thinking on sensitivity settings, running maxed out on the sensitivity and then complaining that there is to much noise going on when if they would have just been willing to cut the sensitivity back a bit most likely it would have eliminated the ground response, I like to run my detectors pretty hot and do not mind a little bit of feed back from the ground, but there is a time to drop sensitivity and times you can run maxed out sensitivity, and most people want to run at full gain all the time, which a lot of times can not be done

Try THIS in Lake Tahoe STEVE.!

Below is a link I hope works to a admittedly low quality phone video I took at the worst black sand area I have ever seen.

NOTE - The Outrageous settings on the Axiom are - Salt Mode, Sensitivity at Minimum of 1, Threshold at -9 So NO Threshold, Auto ground balance off.

Machine would not ground balance in ANY mode or sensitivity on this ground and gave a Zero Zero balance number for both balance readouts, and no target could be heard over the very loud ground noise, SO I turned threshold OFF completely, and that helped BUT now still the ground was being detected as targets.!  SO I reduced the sensitivity until most of the ground was no longer detected, that turned out to be all the way down to 1, and still I had to lift the coil about two inches above the ground to eliminate most ground signalling, to test a target I put a dime down 3 inches and it Clearly and Repeatedly detected it, even buried.  Note it does have a different target sound than normal.

I did not try it deeper, but am sure it would work with the signal as strong as it was with the coil 2 inch above the ground, so actually a distance of 5 inches in this ridiculous ground.

Salt Mode, Sensitivity of 1, and NO Threshold - Went From Undetectable Ground to working well, Who in their right mind would even try such settings.!!  🙃

Thank you for the advice JCR, it's been a long time since I last detected and technology has moved on so much!

I've just researched SM detectors in France and agree this is the route I need to take if I want to do some beach hunting. I've found a couple within my price range, the Garret Ace Apex and Nokta Macro Legend....?

Would appreciate any comments on either or any further advice to help me make decisions..

The Legend is a great SMF packed full of features that the Apex does not have, read my reply to your thread

I'll be taking it out straight away looking for gold and doing some beach detecting so I'll put up video as soon as I can.  I'll be just learning the machine and clueless with it, but at least you'll be able to see it in action and some preliminary results.  It sounds very easy to use so I'm sure I'll be up to speed pretty quickly.

Since our ground here in the U.S is quite different from your ground phrunt my hopes are the company sends at least one over here to someone like @Steve Herschbach to do some testing, so us U.S detectorist can get an idea on the E1500 also

Hi, I've just joined the forum and looking for some advice from the experts!

I want to take up an old hobby again but I'm not sure where to start.. what detector to buy.. do I need a pin pointer etc. All advice would be very welcome!

I live in South West France , so rules here are quite strict on where you can detect. I have researched the local coastal beaches and lakes, which are legal so I would like to buy a waterproof detector that's good in salt water and fresh, but I am also surrounded by vineyards, so looking for a good all rounder. I did have a budget of around €300- €400 but after reading a lot of posts I realise I need to spend a little more to get something decent on a hobby/intermediate scale...so looking around €500 max

With my search so far I've come up with 2 possibilities, Garrett AT Pro and a Minelab Vanquish 540 but there are so many options out there I've got a bit lost..!

I would love to hear from anyone with any advice or recommendations for what would suit my needs best..

    Thanking in advance

since one of the things you said you want is water proof i personally would scratch the vanquish off that list, the Vanquish is not water proof only the coils are waterproof, As JCR stated a SMF will be your best bet.

For me personally I own a At Pro and never did take to the ATP

You might consider looking at the new Nokta Score and Double Score also the Legend those three are the best bang for your Dollar when it comes to SMF

Also you might consider the Xterra Pro, the Xterra pro is the cheapest of all the detectors I have mentioned but it is a Selectable single frequency detector that has a good beach mode from my understanding, the reviews on the Xterra Pro on the beach have been pretty good

Another detector you might also consider since you are going to be detecting beaches is the Garrett Apex, the Apex is not water proof but has very good reviews from beach hunters again the Apex is not water proof though but the coils are water proof, the Apex is another SMF or Multi frequency detector

all the detectors I have listed are in the budget you have set except the Legend you may have to add a little bit more money

out of all the detectors I have listed I only have experience with the Legend and the AT Pro

    Just some food for thought

As for a pin pointer a pin pointer is not a necessary accessory to have but is a nice accessory to have it makes target recovery much easier and quicker than not having one.

  12. I picked up a Xp ORX in a trade deal, it came with the 9 inch HF coil

I have personally never used any of the Xp detectors, and felt it was time to give one a try,one of the main reasons I wanted to try the ORX was because of how lite and compact they are, I wanted a detector I could carry in a back pack when I went out nugget detecting while I was swinging the Axiom, and I felt the ORX checked all the boxes in what I was wanting it for

Now my question is I am thinking about also picking up the 9.5x5 HF coil for the ORX also would that coil be better for nugget detection over the 9 inch round HF coil ???, I do know the 9 inch HF coil runs up as high as 59 KHz and the 9.5x5 elliptical HF coil runs up to 81 KHz

Is it worth picking up the 9.5x5 HF elliptical coil ???

Thanks for any and all replies

I doubt it is a VLF replacement for most people. The target id system is nothing like a VLF and does not separate ferrous from non-ferrous. See my prior post and links as regards that. This is for the PI enthusiast. I almost never use a VLF and prefer a PI for almost everything I do, including park detecting for coins. The applications where a PI is just no good I simply don't do, as I'd rather go use a PI. So if you have used PI a lot and know what that entails then this may be right up your alley. But if you are someone who has mostly used VLF (not saying that is you) then thinking this replaces VLF is not really the way it is. It is more like different strokes for different folks.

Simple question. Could you ditch all your detectors but the Axiom and be happy? If not, then this will not be all that different.

Since I am so new to using a PI Steve at this time I would have to say no I could not ditch my VLF's and turn to only using the Axiom for everything I would be totally lost doing that at this point, so I see your point

It does seem this new PI is very interesting though, thank you for clearing this up in my mind

  14. Following

being so new to the world of PI i would not know what to suggest, everything that has been suggested sounds great to me, the one thing I am having a hard time with is the squared off noses on the Axiom Coils, if I had one wish is Garrett or an after market coil manufacturer would come out with some more pointed and smaller coils, in Mono and DD other than that I am happy with the Axiom so far, if some of the things that are being suggested can be done with updates great.

yes, the most important feature for me the GPX 6000 is missing is a ground balance lock, like Fixed on the earlier GPX, it's a major flaw in the design I think and seeing a majority of the people I've seen regularly used Fixed then it makes little sense this was overlooked.

That is one of the biggest things I like about the 24K and the Axiom, with the 24K you can either unlock it and run in tracking or lock it and let the GB stay fixed until you need to change it for the ground you are on Axiom is the same, that was one of the things with the GM1000 that I did not care for was the fact it was always tracking and personally for me I just never trusted the tracking on the GM1000, I never worked so hard with a detector trying to keep on the Ground balance which was almost a constant thing with the GM1000

    Me either.

I look back at my teen and early 20's years, and I cringe at a lot of what I said and did. I suspect most, if not all of us, can relate to that.

The mistakes I made now, wouldn't fall into the category of "stupid". It's more like making mistakes because I was rushing, or trying to cut corners for whatever reason. In other words, those mistakes aren't "stupid" mistakes, because I knew the possible repercussions of the actions, and rolled the dice anyway. However, when I was young, I didn't even consider repercussions for many things I did. I was truly "stupid" in that way. I guess realizing all of that, is what maturity and wisdom is all about.

Yep I was the same as you in them early days, but the way I look at it were all life learning experiences

  18. @Skyfired69 For me personally if I wanted to purchase a detector for the purposes you intend to use it for and I set a budget of $1500 I would consider purchasing two detectors one being the Nokta Legend, the Legend is a great all around detector and has a very good dedicated gold mode

and I know there are some on here that are,  thinking why would he suggest a detector that he had issues with well those issues have been resolved now, and I have always felt the Legend was a great all around detector, even though I had some updating issues.

The other detector I would seriously consider is the Whites TDI that is posted up for sale on DP no it is not a Mine Lab or even a Garrett Axiom but the TDI was not that bad of a PI from what I have read about it, its already had the mods done and again would be a great way to get your feet wet in the PI department

Doing what I have suggested above you would have a great all around VLF that has a pretty sensitive gold mode as well as a very good PI and you would most likely be into both for less than the $1500 max budget you have set for yourself

In the end only you can spend your Money the way you see fit to spend it, there have been several great suggestions from people here on DP, and you have many options to consider.

I bet most of post here are by those over 60  🫣

I have made most of those stupid mistakes but the funnies was digging at a tree root. My prospecting mate was filling in a hole at tree root. I said that hole was fairly deep do you mind if see what it sound like, thing  like him it was a tree root. It was a soft broad signal. I said I would have a go at it. I pulled out a two ounce nugget and said that is your, no way and gave to his wife to keep.........Well that sets up the mood for the spot. I got a signal 20 yards away at the base of a tree similar to his nugget. Of cause I went deep but it got softer so I went on the other side of the tree and got the same volume signal after I had dug a deep hole the signal got softer as the coil went in the hole, BUT as I pulled the coil out in disgust the signal got louder as I raised it above ground level. Why, well the tree had grown over a house shoe and was over 2 feet high and was completely invisible and covered with bark. All my hopes up for a bloody horse shoe.  🤣

I am not even going to go into the stupid things I did in my younger years, I did some pretty stupid things when I was young, things that I look back on today and say what to hell were you thinking back then, some of those stupid things could have cost me my life (Thank God) they did not, at least in my 60s I am smart enough to not pull the stunts I did in my teen years and 20s, I look at these kids these days and see some things that just stop me in my tracks and then I remember hey stupid you did some things that were just as dumb back when you were their age

I live in AZ, we have a lot of Hot Rocks and tiny gold.  I've been thinking of getting a Gold Detector.  I have narrowed it down to 3.  Gold Bug 2, Gold Monster 1000, and the XP Deus 2.  I'm a beginner, but would like to advance with the detector I choose.  $1500 is the most I can go, even though a PI detector would be excellent.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Personally speaking i would also consider the Garrett GM 24K if I were you, I owned the Gold Monster 1000 and there were things I did not like with the GM1000, it had bad coil knock sensitivity, and a few other things I just did not care for,and do not take what I say as the GM1000 as saying its a bad nugget detector it is not it was very hot on small non ferrous targets, have never owned any of the XP detectors or a gold bug 2 so I will not comment on either of those, I just think there are better nugget detectors out there than the GM1000 and in my opinion the Garrett 24K is one of those that I feel is better

There is a very nice PI for sale in the Classifieds section that is a good buy in my opinion, if I did not have a PI already I would have jumped all over this already, I believe its still available and I think it would make a great first PI for someone

something you need to think about do you want a all around detector or do you want a gold specific detector

What part of AZ are you located

I came back from a detect about and got in my car to go to the next spot.  A buddy of mine flagged me down on the turn around and he said, "You backed over your detector!"  I had ... my 7000.  I was lucky that it only broke the bottom sleeve that holds the coil, and I had another coil with me.  Detector was fine and the coil was also ok.  I had forgotten to put the detector in the car ... dumb and lucky in the same event.

I would have been freaking out when I realized I had just backed over a $9000 detector, its great that it ended up the way it did but man were you very lucky to say the Least
