  1. My buddy Mark and I hit a 1850's house site a couple times and Mark was on fire!! Thanks for looking Ron Swenson Ron (CA)
  2. If you drive by and see someone in a known gold area with a metal detector Gig is up!! We usually run with lights off and only use lights to retrieve or video some finds. But at night someone is not going to see the metal detector in my hand!! You may see lights but odds are you think it is just the farmer doing something in the field. Plus I enjoy night hunting and it does not rob time (too much) from my family or real job. Except now it is dark at 5 pm so nights are longer!! We had one site that became pretty popular and each week more and more people would show up. One Saturday we stopped to hunt and there were 12 pickup trucks and about 20 hunters. It looked like and England Rally. We just turned and left. Site was fenced and posted within 30 days!! People had been hunting it with no hassle since the 80's but not in those numbers at one time. A few members know the site.
  3. I love the TRX for nugget hunting. Very sensitive, very little pressure or ground falsing and does not interfere with the GPX5000. Starts to false pretty bad when the batteries get low or if you use it to close to the big coil. It was odd because the TRX started to false before the GPX5000 did. With the other pinpointers, I found that the GPX would start to freak out before the pinpointer.
  4. Thanks for being a great ambassador for our hobby!! You can send me a couple of those free machines!!
  5. Some dude in made a 5.5 x 7" coil. He has a You Tube Video: He must be pretty good as it appears he has made a couple other coils for his DEUS. Don't think he is making coils for sale though. That is way over my head. I can solder a headphone wire but that is about it!
  6. The 5" must be a third party coil as I have not seen or heard that DEUS has a 5" coil. I know some people have aftermarket coils but I have not tried anything smaller than the 9"
  7. The DEUS is definitely a great machine. It will find gold. Even on a 2 grain nugget I can air test it about 3.5" and about half that in the ground. Not bad for a VLF. VID is not good on the small stuff as mentioned before and it can be a bit chirpy. The picture is a 16 grain nugget found with the 11" coil. The 9" is much more sensitive and is my coil of choice. This machine shines in the iron. I call it my Clean Up machine for my relic sites. I cherry pic with the CTX3030 as I like the tones and ID much better than the DEUS. But when the targets slow with the 11' and 6" CTX then I hit it with the DEUS and the 9". It will always find more targets in the iron. At that point it is a beep and dig machine as I have found the ID to be iffy at best in the heavy iron (to be expected when a target is surrounded by 5-6 square nails) I am usually running reactivity at 4 at this point with a disc in the 15-20 range. Most of the ground I am hunting is in the 83-87 range so it is pretty hot. But it is a great tool to have in the arsenal and you cant beat the ergonomics. Light as a feather and compact as you can get.
  8. Great dogs!! She is beautiful!! I grew up with a 3 wieners ( my brothers) and we had a dachshund too!!
  9. Great post and thanks for sharing!! Sounds like you guys had a great time and found some gold as a bonus!! Congrats!
  10. I've never found any gold at that site. But it was a great relic site.
  11. My buddy Mark recently found this one. I labeled it the Dachshund Nugget for obvious reasons.
  12. Thanks for sharing--you simply never know!! My buddy once found a large cent under a corner stone on a foundation. The stone was pretty big so it obviously was put there on purpose. I was lucky to find a coin purse a miner had buried during the gold rush! Gotta love this hobby!
  13. Hey Steve, Thanks for the plug!! You are 100% correct and even though we say we are relic hunting we hold the same theory you stated: that these bigger nuggets still lie buried because the nugget hunters don't fight that much iron with the PI machines. While relic hunting it is still in our minds that a big nugget could be hiding and this one hit just like the last two bigger nuggets I found with the CTX. Most of our sites are mining camp sites and they were camping right on the gold while they looked for it, so it makes sense that some gold is in the heavy iron. We have actually headed out with "nugget hunting" as or objective with the CTX and have had some success on smaller nuggets as well. The first nugget was a bit of a fluke as we were not looking for gold at all and it just popped out and really freaked me out as it was the biggest piece of gold I had ever found, but now when we get a deep 39/40 signal we kind of start visualizing a big nugget. We are wrong 99.5% of the time but makes the dig pretty exciting even when it is a bullet or a rivet!! Thanks again for posting the video. I do nugget hunt with a 5000 but not a full time nugget guy, but I joined your forum and hopefully I will be able to post some more gold in the future. Well, I know I have at least one more post in the future!! Ron (CA)
