Pinpointa (Ray) didnā€™t post much on this forum but he had been swinging detectors in Australia for over 50 years. He was originally from Melbourne, Australia and was one of the first Whiteā€™s dealers back there in the day. He was a close neighbour to me here in Perth for quite a while before moving to Tasmaniaā€¦..he was also a really good friend. I didnā€™t realise he had passed away late last year and only found out recently. He got me back into detecting over 20 years ago and I thank him for bringing the joy of it back to me. Ray loved Whiteā€™s detectors and he was a formidable hunterā€¦..Ray loved detecting for our ā€œGoldiesā€ā€¦ā€¦.being the Australian $1 and $2 coins and his Whiteā€™s V3i paid for itself many times over. IĀ remember Ray showing me a pile of these coins from a month long detecting holiday and I recall there being over $2500 just in these coins alone. Every one of these coins would have brought a smile to his face (except for the ones hit by lawnmowers šŸ˜‚). He used to dig them out with surgical forceps because he was very careful about the grass and didnā€™t want to let on he had been in the area. I used to call him the Doctor and would ask him if he was ā€œready for surgeryā€ā€¦ā€¦the patients being the $1 and $2 coins šŸ˜ƒ

Rest In Peace Rayā€¦ā€¦.Iā€™m hoping the plot where they buried you is devoid of any coins because I know how that would annoy you.

That is one shocking news. May he rest in peace, tracking some fresh and untouched areas. Strength to his family and friends.

I have the 950 and theĀ 13" Detech Ultimate DD MX Sport Coil. I always read the smaller worked better in high trash areas, hence the six shooter. Both of the others gave wild readings, but maybe I didn't have them dialed in right. I went yesterday for about an hour and a half, took the tracking lock off, and ground balanced manually, and tried the sensitivity at 2, and 1. It took a lot of other signals out, but the ones I got still were crazy. Swinging in one direction, it would show penny/quarter or half dollar, when I swung back, the it showed iron, or pull tab most of the time. there are a good bit of old pull tabs around, so that was correct. Here is some of the stuff I found, lots of thin pieces of metal were in the hole with the brass geared shaft...wondered if it went to a clock, or music box maybe.

Oops... that is more than one problem. If that was an area I'd like to hunt I'd use the GB "locked" and the disc as high to reject the aluminum (tabs or can slaw). - But with that small jewelry and other metal in that range would be lost, even good stuff masked by the iron. Right here in my area I've two places with equal problems. Both places I've removed from the scratch-book.

  5. Hello Diggin'it. I re-read your introductory post and would suggest putting the 4x6 shooter aside. This wasn't White's best ball. Have one in the arsenal myself but used it only 2 times.

Try to get the 6x10DD (White's) or a 7"DD Ultimate or a SEF 8x6DD (both made by Detech). But be sure the coil is made for the MX7 (cann't remember the loop connector).

On the other hand the stock 950 wich came with the detector will do fine, too.

  6. Hello PSPR. Now that is a great introduction. As GB_Amateur mentioned, diggin' junk is part of this hobby. Otherwise you can do cherry-picking but that would be half the fun I think. May be you're able to change locations or can join a club of detectorists in your area so one may show you where some of the better spots are. Hopefully you will have better luck this time and do some nice finds and meet a lot of smart and nice people.

Take care & stay healthy - All the Best of LuckšŸ¤žšŸ‘šŸ˜Š

  7. Hello.

That autotracking can cause some problems in areas with many spots of higher mineralization and a lot of man made iron (rubbish). That will make the machine unstable. You may lock in the ground (manual ground balance or ground grab) and/or lower the sensitivity (gain).

I'd recommend to read the paragraph about TRACK in the MX7 manual pg.14/15.

  8. @PimentoUKĀ  - So in other words you say a small coil will have trouble to detect bigger items? Wow.

All the written from Carl makes sense to me, except this phrase. If the detector/coil combi will detect a cent in 5 inches it will also detect a bin lid in 5 inches, but I think the bin lid will be detected deeper, too.

And what my experience in the field is, the shape of big metal-parts can also be better determined with a smaller than with a large coil.

And thanks for trying to explain Induction Balance, but that wasn't the question at all. I also know that the detectors frequency will take effect to the targets detectable size so most gold detectors have higher frequencies like 50kHz and more, VLF wise.

    In a nutshell:

Big coil = more depth on big targets, less depth on small targets, worse separation

Small coil = more sensitivity to small targets, less sensitivity on big targets, better separation

Concentric coil = Slightly better depth, easier pinpointing, worse ground handling

DD coil = Slightly worse depth, harder pinpointing, better ground handling

There is way way more to it than this, I would need to write 3 chapters to do it justice.

Hello Carl, could you please explain this to me?

    Hi everyone,

A few years back, I came across an older Metal Detector at a garage sale and it came with a ā€œBigfoot Coilā€ , I thought Iā€™d be using it more often than I was and decided to see how much they cost.Ā After a Google/eBay search, I listed it on eBay for a price that I felt was fair that they were selling for.Ā I ended up finding someone interested in it on eBay and sent it out to them for cheaper than I even had it listed for, as well as paying for the shipping.Ā

About a week after he received it, he sends me this message;Ā

ā€œI finally have a chance to check out the Bigfoot coil you sent and thought after hooking up to 1 of my 3 DFX detectors that this is not the correct coil as you have listed for DFX.Ā I went in the basement and found my DFX Bigfoot coil I have not used in several years and testing them against one another. You coil has to be for different frequency Whites detectors as itā€™s different looking upon top of coil and testing with my wedding ring I get a pretty consistent 20-22 VDI which is normal number even with 9 1/2ā€ coil and with Bigfoot coil it shows a VDI number of close to 85 consistent so I would like to receive a return label as this coil you sent is not correctly working for a DFX.ā€

    Ā

Just wondering if I can get some input from someone that actually knows what heā€™s talking about šŸ˜… from what I originally saw, it looked like the BigFoot Coil only came in one model? But could there be different types? Iā€™d really hate to pay shipping again and go through all the hassle of returning it and trying to resell it again. Any help or input is appreciated!Ā
    Ā

Attached are pictures of my Bigfoot coil , and the last picture is a pic he sent in comparison to his other one.

    Ā

    Thank you in advance!

You didn't mention which detector the Big Foot came with!? As far as I can see on the net there are two different types of Big Foot Coils. One for the 6kHz range (as yours should be) and one for the 3-15kHz range (including the DFX). So I think it's your fault and you stand to correct it.

Hello thank you for the reply, so when using the relic program do I just use that program and then when detecting if I don't get much pings I should change the dc sensitivity higher? If that correct? Also will the coins be at the same numbers as the other programs? As I always dig anything 70 or higher? Thank you

That's right Josh. The only thing required after changing the sensitivity (AC or DC) is to do the ground balance again.

About the numbers, they are all the same whatever program is used.

I would recommend reading the manual, then reading it again, and then going and practicing.
