In 2014 I posted a review of a detector by a company almost nobody here had ever heard of: http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/352-detailed-review-of-the-nokta-fors-gold-nugget-detector/ If you look at that review of the Nokta FORS Gold you will see I had made several comments about things I think needed improving on the machine. Yes, I do that sort of thing. What amazed me is Nokta fixed every one of them, and in record time - I made a special note in the review about it later. It made a serious impression on me. What then followed was a quick succession of machines by Nokta and Makro, the sister company. Nothing earth shattering per se but top flight performance at aggressive prices and a willingness to try new ideas and listen to feedback. Frankly, it came on so quickly it actually turned some people off, and I saw complaints about too many machines too fast! The entire time that we are seeing this rapid succession of machines most of us are waiting on this or that manufacturer to deliver just one new machine. October 2014 to now, and I am looking at a machine in the Nokta Impact that frankly has no exact equivalent from many of the old school top tier manufacturers. Maybe you guys see no merit in being able to select frequencies but I am highly focused on replacing all my various VLF machines with just one detector, and it is most likely going to be a selectable frequency model that wins that competition. If Nok/Mak can get from FORS CoRe to Impact in three years the "Big 5" manufacturers had better get serious and quick about picking up the pace. The listen and bend over backwards to please attitude alone is getting a lot of fans willing to forgive in other areas. Next up we will no doubt be seeing PI models and multi frequency.... and who knows what else. People can and will argue the relative merits of the Impact versus the other top-of-the-line models, but just the fact the Impact is getting compared to the very best anyone else can make says something about how far this company has come. Anyway, I have my own ideas about the Nokta Impact and what I will be doing with it, and most revolve around the large coil. The main thing I wanted to note here is what an accomplishment this is a for a company almost none of us heard of less than three years ago, and what it means for where they will be three years from now. Congratulations to the Nokta and Makro team and most especially to Dilek Gönülay for an impressive job well done.

We have the New Garrett AT Pro 2? coming in May. The new Minelab Gold Monster 1000 is said to be available in May. The new Nokta Impact is now shipping to dealers and will have widespread availability in May. And finally, the new XP DEUS HF elliptical coil is supposed to ship in May! Looks like something for just about everyone there. Not sure about the Garrett but look for more from me on the Minelab GM1000, the Nokta Impact with large coil, and the Deus elliptical coil when the time comes.

Nothing but this video tease until May 6th however. The manufacturers are actually trying to make us all crazier than we already are. Steve to wife "they are driving me crazy!" My wife "that's a short drive honey!" Looks like an AT variant, in line with rumors and early announcement.... Well, I attended the Minelab Partner conference this last weekend and got to visit with a number of friends, both dealers and Minelab company folks as well. The ICMJ may not be a detector dealer, but we are a business partner in the sense that we run their ads and help them get the word out on their products. Of course I signed a paper that I could not talk about anything I saw, so that limits what I can say. However, I can say that Minelab has long been a very research and development focused company (no secret there) and everything I did see showed that they are continuing in that direction, with good stuff in the pipeline to come and good stuff in a number of categories. They will all come out in their own good time when the products are ready. The dealers I spoke with were looking forward to the release of the items that were discussed - and that's about as much as I can say. I could not make the last conference which was held in New Orleans because of conflicting commitments to the magazine, so it was good to make this one. Lots of folks were there who are involved in prospecting and metal detecting. As an example, Steve and I had visited Reed's prospecting shop in Perth years ago, and the owners were there in Las Vegas and I had a fun chance to catch up with them while I was there. There were quite a few folks from the land down under in attendance and not just folks who work for Minelab, but dealers too. The event was very well attended and I think the fact that it was held at the end of the Vegas Shot show was a factor in bringing more people there. There was a lot of good, open give and take communication. Minelab even gave out little wireless voting devices that were like a small calculator, and then they would ask to get opinions from the dealers and take input via these little voting devices - it was very cool and interesting to see the opinions of the dealers as a group in real time. It didn't take long to see that although there were a number of dealers who were prospecting focused, there were even more that were coin and treasure focused. There were also times to ask questions and make comments, with lots of good questions and comments from Gerry of Gerry's detectors in Boise and Nevada's own Doc Lousignont from Las Vegas. I also got to meet Ben Harvey, the new gentleman who will be leading Minelab North America (Gary Schafer's replacement). Ben seems like a good guy and I'm sure that folks will get to know him better over time - he's only been on the job a short time. So all in all, an excellent trip and the meetings I think were a big success. Although the forecast looked brutal for my drive down there with a bad snow storm both the day that I was going down and on the day I was coming back, it was not nearly as bad as it could have been as a fair amount of the storms from Fallon south fell as rain, not snow. Going down the snow lightened up considerably east of Sparks and cleared out before Fernley and then coming back I had bad snow over Goldfield summit and also from Fernley to my house, but I've seen worse. I had feared it would be bad most of the way and turn what is a 7+ hour trip when the weather is good into a 15 hour fight with the snow and ice, and it was just not that way. I think it took a little over 8 hours to get there and about 9.5 coming back. I rode the monorail back and forth from my hotel to the Conference hotel and that was a fun thing.

Back in November there was interest stirred up by reports of a dedicated gold nugget detector being made for XP for sale in Africa - the Depar DPR 600. Details were confirmed later by GaryUK who is tied in with XP and has tested the unit (and stars in the video below). The main news he related was that XP intends to market a version of this dedicated nugget detector outside Africa in 2017. September 2018 - New XP ORX announced. The machine will be a very limited version of the upcoming DEUS V4 update. In fact I think the testing of this unit in Africa was key to the development of the V4 update. The new machine will come stock with the V4 high frequency coil and looks a lot like a DEUS. However, the software will be locked into several versions of the Goldfield program and will not have any functions needed for anything except nugget detecting. Final features may vary in the final US/UK version but here is what Gary says about the DPR 600: The DPR has no pinpoint mode, no expert menu, no multi-tone, no notch, no coin mode, no non-motion menu, no user updates (USB download will only support bug corrections). The current DPR version has no wireless headphone support, no headphone controller, does not support the DEUS coil with lower frequencies (only works with the two HF coils) and only supports 3 high frequencies, not 4. The DPR has a 2 year warranty the Deus has a 5 year warranty. These details were gleaned from Garys post on his forum but it may not be visible to people who are not forum members as I am currently. Andy Sabisch has also confirmed the existence of this new model planned for 2017 at Findmall. The bottom line is this machine will resemble a DEUS and will have a very limited feature set focused on nugget detecting, but at a lower price. No idea on price or availability for as we all know the V4 update is running late. There is nothing here per se for current DEUS owners because the V4 update will give a DEUS owners all the features of the new machine plus tons more. But for somebody looking for a very light weight nugget detector this new machine may very well offer an upgrade over existing single frequency models. I have always thought the DEUS was overpriced for people who just want to nugget detect, although it does have the capability. A dedicated nugget detector at a price more in line with what you expect of other VLF nugget detectors could be a very good move for XP in my opinion.

This is a significant new product platform that has taken five years to develop at a cost of over $10 million." The good news for Minelab is it has paid off as sales and profits for Codan have been up in the last few years after collapsing when the Africa GPX 4500 bubble popped. From the Codan 2016 Annual Report "while sales were strong in the developed world when the product was released last year, the most significant growth in our FY16 gold detector sales has come from the successful launch of this product into our African markets. The GPZ 7000® was launched in Africa in October 2015, and demand exceeded our initial expectations". Since Minelab's parent company Codan is publicly traded interesting tidbits can be found in their annual reports. A few more: "The GO-FIND® is now Minelab’s highest unit seller" "FY17 OBJECTIVES - Release two exciting new products – lower-priced gold machine for Africa and improved larger coil for GPZ 7000®.... Continue investment in product development to create next wave of new products in FY18." Nobody knows for sure how many metal detectors are sold worldwide but Codan alone currently does close to $100 million sales annually in detecting equipment. First Texas (Bounty Hunter, Fisher, Teknetics) has filed suit in California Central District Court against Deteknix for copyright infringement. The basic claim from here 20. First Texas engineers have investigated the Deteknix Quest and the software contained thereon. Based on their investigation, and on information and belief, the Deteknix Quest contains software that is substantially similar to, and copies copyrightable aspects of, the T2 Software both in whole and in part. 21. On information and belief, Deteknix accessed First Texas’s T2 Software and copied it off a commercial T2 product. On information and belief, Deteknix used nitric acid and/or certain other techniques to defeat First Texas’s access protection and copy the T2 Software off a commercial T2 product. White's has been advertising a "Garage Sale" of discontinued items including refurbished Detectors. I really don't need another Detector but couldn't resist ordering a refurbished White's Coinmaster GT with free shipping for $140.00. Probably just use it as a backup to my other detectors but I think it should work fine for parks, dry sand, and just general purpose detecting. I see on eBay their going for much more. It arrived yesterday in a brand new box, pretty cool. Might order another one as a Christmas gift for the Grandson.
