Artifact?

Can someone tell me if I have found a Native American artifact?  It appears to be an image carved in slate. Found in a river bed near my home in NJ. It is approximately 2.5x 3.5 inches

Looks like a rock with an inclusion to me. Its a nice find none the less.

Slate tends to be relatively soft.  If this has been tumbled in a river, nothing carved on it would’ve survived.  I concur this appears to be a nonhomogeneous rock.  Based on your picture, it appears the inclusions may be a little softer than the host rock, since it appears the lighter areas have been worn off a little deeper.
