  1. **Make this machine more effective. I’m going to use it on a GPX 4000 as well.
  2. I just ordered and detech 11 ultra sensing spiral mono. I’m going to test it out on the old big box TDI. I was going to use it for some gold but try it out in the deep relic fields too. I’m hoping it will do well on sub gram nugs. I dug some pretty small lead with it when relic hunting. I found quite a bit of tiny pieces of camp lead and small buckshots at a descent depth. Many a better coil will make this coil more effective. Also
  3. I expect that on those sites that have been hit hard that the big mono is the way to go. On the real deep stuff the iron reject isn’t going to work anyway on stuff that’s 12+ inches deep.
  4. I live not too far from where they have the DIVs. I’ve been a few times but it’s been about 9-10 years since I’ve been and I was using a TDI at the time. I remember digging some bullets at the target range 12 inches deep at Brandy rock. I could swing the TDI all day because of its lighter weight. I definitely don’t want to add much more weight if I don’t have too. The 15x12 commander isn’t bad. Most of the spots I have around there haven’t been hunted with pulse machines but some were hunted well with VLFs. So I should do ok with it. All though the Coiltek 14 inch DD does sound like a winner as far as weight and depth. The iron rejection only goes down probably 6-8 inches?
  5. That’s what I kind of figured about the 15 spiral. Really sensitive on the small bits. I almost bought a coiltek 14 DD before I got the commander. I wish I had now. I bet that thing punches deep on bullets and buttons. I was looking for a 12.5 DD detech as well but couldn’t find one. I should have spent the few extra dollars on the coiltek. Do you think it’s a good bit deeper than the commander? But I’ll let you know if I’m interested In the detech 15 spiral. Thanks for letting me know.
  6. Currently I have the Commander 15x12 DD for finding relics in civil war camps. Is the weight of the detech 15 DD spiral worth any extra depth over the commander? Most fields that have been plowed got turned over 12-15 inches deep. The commander should be getting me to the bottom of the plow line. I’ve heard from others the detech is a great coil but the weight is the biggest complaint. If I get one I’m hoping I can find a used one at a descent price instead of paying retail. I’d also being using it for a little bit of prospecting for gold. I recently purchased a detech 11 ultra sensing mono for prospecting that’s still in shipping. I also have the 11 commander DD.
  7. That sounds more like it. I can’t wait to try it out. I’m thinking it will be a good set up for my area. I might get a larger coil eventually. I hear the detech 15 ultimate spiral is deep and sensitive for a DD. And a lot of guys around here use it for relics. I’m interested to see how deep the 11 ultra sensing will punch down on some larger stuff as well.
  8. Thanks for the info man. I settled on a detech 11 round ultra sensing. Hopefully it will do the trick. I was reading that it weighs 2 kgs on one site. Is that correct? I can’t find it anywhere else
  9. This is true. I should be able to get it to quiet down. It says that the older 12.5 is bundle wound spiral like the older 11 inch version. But the ultra sensing version must be more sensitive
  10. I’ll probably be taking it in some fairly high mineralized ground too. I guess I could switch to DD at that point
  11. Would a 12.5 detech mono bundle wound be a good compromise between shallow sub gram pieces and larger deeper gold? And operate less noisy in moderate ground?
  12. Do you think an elliptical mono would run more smoothly on the 4000 light to moderate bad ground? Like the coiltek 14x9 elite coiltek. Or would the round 11 elite or 11 detech mono be ok? I like the price better on the detech monos but I know the Coilteks are top notch.
  13. I’ve heard of some big nuggets being found close by like several grams. There’s a nugget the size of a fist in the Smithsonian museum that someone found around in the early 1900s found probably 10 miles away. Some of it is embedded in quartz. I really don’t know anyone personally that prospects around here. It’s kept kind of quiet if they do. Most people relic hunt. There were over a dozen mines that were in operation up until the early 1900s within 10 miles of me. I expect most of the gold around here is a few grams and smaller.
  14. The smaller coil would preform better in moderately hot ground?
  15. I’m torn between a detech 11 ultra sensing and 14 ultra sensing. Which one would run more stable on the 4000?
  16. Does anyone know if the older detech monos are flat spiral wound like the newer Ultra sensing monos?
  17. I see an 11 inch detech mono at a good price. Are they all spiral wound or just the ones that say ultra sensing? It says in the description that it’s spiral wound
  18. Yeah my main concern is having a good all around coil for gold. Which ones are spiral wound? I have a mix of good ground, moderate and hot that I hunt.
  19. I have all DD commander coils for relic hunting in Virginia. 10x5, 11, 15x12. I also have a big box TDI with a 12 inch mono. I haven’t tried my hand with gold yet. I was thinking of getting a mono coil that I can use on the GPX. Like an 11, or 8 or and elliptical mono. I don’t know if it worth investing in one or use what I have.
  20. You say the 15x8 detech is not very sensitive on small gold?
  21. Thanks for the great info. I’ll definitely keep those charts. I may get a medium sized mono for the GPX for the more mild to moderate ground so I can cover a little more area and still get some good sensitivity on small stuff. While still getting some descent depth on larger pieces. If I don’t get one hopefully I can do ok with what I already have. I should be able to still get some shallow sub gram nuggets with the DDs in mono mode hopefully. When relic hunting with the TDI I was picking up some BB sized pieces of lead with the 12 inch mono with fairly good depth. I’m just wondering if it’s worth investing in a 11 or 8 or 10x5 inch mono. Another option in good ground and creeks would be using the equinox 800. I haven’t played with the 6 inch coil much or used it in gold mode yet. The 10x5 coiltek might be useful as well. I could use that in iron invested old home sites for relics and coins too.
  22. I’m new to digging for gold. Although I’m a pretty seasoned relic hunter. I’ve been hunting for civil war artifacts , colonial relics and coins for years here in Virginia. I currently run a GPX 4000 with a 15x12 DD, 11DD, and a 10x5 DD. All minelab coils. I also have an older big box whites TDI with a 12 inch mono as well as an Equinox 800 with all the minelab coils. I live in the gold pyrite belt here in Virginia. There are many abandoned mine sites within a few square miles of me. Several fault lines. But not many people hunt gold around here other than one club that has a claim on a steam about 5 miles away. All that said, would it be worth me getting a mono coil for the GPX? Or can I do just as well with what I have turning them onto mono mode? I was thinking of an 11 inch mono commander or an elliptical mono coil of similar size. The soil varies around here. It fairly hot on the high ground and better ground down in the river bottoms.
  23. Tyler here, nice to meet everyone. I’ve been reading a lot of the forum information and have seen a lot of great information that had helped me a lot. I swing a GPX 4000, Minelab Equinox 800, Whites TDI older big box, and have a Nokta legend. I primarily relic hunt but have been wanting to get into gold prospecting. I have a mix of highly mineralized ground, moderate, and good ground all in the area. live in central Virginia along the gold pyrite belt that had many active mines in the past and a few smaller a ones now as all the large scale ones have all been inactive because of restrictions from local governments so it’s mainly individuals and clubs. I have had great success with civil war and colonial relics around here as we are on the heart of the action. I have yet to find any natural gold but haven’t spent a lot of time searching for any as of yet. I currently for the GPX I have a 15x12 DD commander that I relic hunt with, an 11 DD and a 10x5 DD. A long with the 3 minelab coils for the equinox. Any tips for prospecting? I have access to a lot of ground of all types. Creeks, rivers, springs, rock outcrops etc. Also any thoughts on the detech 15 Ultimate spiral? Since I already have the 15x12 is there much difference? I’d be using it for relics and gold. Also should I get a mono coil for the GPX? There’s a lot of iron all around from farming and the war so I like to have the iron reject of the DD coils. I have a 12 inch mono for the TDI I have been finding BB sized pieces of melted camp lead when in camps. Is the TDI a descent machine for gold? Sorry if this is too much. I look forward to talking with everyone.
