I have to say river hunting is pretty tough itself, but hunting in surf has to be brutal. All the things I had to think of, like making sure everything was secured properly,

Yes, one's world really changes when getting hit with forceful 3-4' walls of water. 😁

Good to see your getting dips in!

I can't imagine what a coil this large would feel like on such a light machine. Without a wire I could see it snapping off and flying/floating/sinking away. 🙄

You know, I did not think of that. If it were to happen that both coil ears broke in rough surf......it would be bye bye, because that little antenna wire is not going to hold against water force. Well hopefully the ears are strong enough. I have not heard of any breaking yet. I will be satisfied when Dewcon gets one and nothing breaks after 6 months.  🤣

I remember when paying over $1000 for a metal detector would have been considered insanity, and metal detectors has been a rare electronic technology where prices have been driven higher, mainly due to lack of real competition versus Minelab.

This is where I have issues right now. PRICE! As a consumer of detector products, I am pi$$ed off at XP's venture into telling me they have released a great beach machine.
YET, the main components of this machine are not usable at the beach. Headphones>junk, Detector rod>junk, offset coil>JUNK.

Then XP would like me to pay a premium price for this.  NOT going to happen!

I don't worry about that much except on larger coils. It's just lack of coils in general. Ironically Minelab gets beat up for that a lot, and XP usually gets a free pass on the subject. But yeah, why does XP rear mount the coil ears? Makes no sense for anyone to do that that I know of.

Well as a pure beach and water hunter a rear mounted coil gets a "F", from me.
It is too hard to keep level on a slanted beach, and the off center position is impossible to control with wave wash coming by. companies and engineers should take note!

Audio response is volume modulation where deeper targets sound fainter than shallow targets.  IMO the nox has poor modulation no matter what the recovery speed is set to

Actually no.  The equinox has gradual modulation just like many detectors do.
The speaker or provided headphones with the Equinox will NEVER bring the Equinox to the level of performance required for complete knowledge of the detector.
    Only those who have performance hearing options will be able to understand the Equinox fully. {as with MANY detectors to date}

Rings are screwy.  I've seen gold rings run a wide range on any TID scale.  I've seen two 10K rings of similar size ring up somewhat differently.  I'm convinced that much depends on the composition and what that gold is mixed with.  If mixed with a high conductor, a TID of 90 isn't surprising...at least that's been my experience.

I have looked at lots of TID charts over the years. The handful out now for the Deus2 clearly shows this detector throws gold all over the map. I am definitely surprised by this outcome.

I'm still in the process of trying to determine an acceptable cut off tone break between low and mid level conductors on the Deus II scale....admittedly, a search that may be in vain.

Surprised to see a gold coin at 85, and a large 10k ring at 90.

What should I look for? Wood handle? Poly Carb, or Stainless steel. Do I want an 11" or is an 8" wide just as good?  What about hole size?

If you are a female, I would not get a scoop over 6". The weight would be difficult with a larger scoop. Heck, a loaded 6" scoop of wet sand is a load for me.
I still have this scoop [with some repairs] after 25 years. I would say a good starter scoop. Don't be afraid to drill a few extra holes in it!

So I am new to all this fun. I am looking for an all around scoop that is good for a noob. Use would be mostly lake and some ocean and probably wet sand.
What is a good entry level brand that can take a beating. The reviews are all over the place. Thanks...

You get what you pay for in scoops. No such thing as entry level and take a beating. There has been good advise in this thread so far.

How many read a "1" on the Equinox.  When I've found chains with my Equinox they have all read "1."

    Hi Bill

In 4 years only 1 or 2 have rung up in the 1-2 range. The rest have been higher.  All of those either have a pendant or spade on them.

I am not trying to mislead anyone here. I just used common re-occurring  aluminum trash items.  Bits of foil and aluminum can slaw can appear absolutely anywhere in the range shown in the photos.

Of course your not misleading anyone. I actually love these comparison chart tests. [i don't want to do them]
Just an observation, Where is the Zinc Penny in the legend test?

Also, I have concluded that the Equinox does in fact the BEST job of separation of keeping gold in a slot that works. If one were to slot out everything 21 and above they would lose little gold. Heck, in 4 years I have never found a piece of gold 20 or above.

The Deus is a nightmare, it splashes gold all over the place, and the legend mixes it with crown caps and zinc pennies with gold [i suspect]

Been told a battery swap might fix this.  I see them for sale for around $30 bucks but haven't looked at them seriously.  Battery life  seems fine but if i can reduce EMI problems it would be worth it.

I know there have been plenty that have changed their batteries. I am doubtful EMI is an issue with batteries that are not at full strength. Really think this would be a reported pattern by now. But hey, nothing would surprise me these days.

I’m really not a fan of high TID notches of any sort for the above reasons.  Also wary of low notches too.  Just set your visual discriminator to filter out scooping TIDs less than 40 unless the FT audio is really good.

Forget many gold chains if your lower limit is 40.................

After a week of not hearing anything from XP I decided to repair it myself. Not happy that it came to this for such an expensive machine.

Ya, no way would I try that. Not worth voiding warranty, better to be patient and get it covered.

For this spot I've settled on field 2 with 5 tones. Horseshoe on. Iron volume at 2 and the other volumes at 20. Recovery at 7. Iron bias f2 and playing with the setting. Sensitivity around 17.

I am not a dirt hunter and others will comment on your settings. But right away I would lower recovery speed to 5. Keep you coil swing slow. 17 is not much for sensitivity, but best to start low, to let the machine teach you what to listen for.
One tip though> You can usually bump the sensitivity up one or two points just to look at a particular target better!

Now these targets that sound good but do not TID, should be dug.

Different operating modes [frequencies] on the Equinox will have different results.
However, in Beach 2 for example.  With the horseshoe mode on I can hear the faintest of targets.  If sweeping around the target produces a double ring or a breakdown of detection in any one direction the target is iron 100% of the time.
If a target is nonferrous, it will give the same unbroken tone 360 degrees around the target. You will have a few pieces of deep iron fool you,  but very few. This is the way to identify targets that do not TID.

But I have no idea if this works in Park or Field modes. Experimenting on a deep buried dime or quarter will be able to show you this, also a deep buried nail to show a double ring or detection breakdown.
I would get it down there at the edge of your ability to hear the target with horseshoe mode on.

The Equinox has a great ability to identify deep nonferrous targets that do not TID anymore. Almost all of these targets would not even been heard at all, working with the horseshoe mode off.   HH
