Josh Bohmker helped us shoot this video for the TDI SL. He and his dad are refining a technique of hunting pocket gold down in Southern Oregon and I was able to join him and Dennis Dickson for a day trip. Afterwards we all hunted in the rain for a couple hours. Found an old stamp mill and the diggings but the cold rain seeped into our bones pretty quick. Did pan around the mill and managed some specks but we'll save the nuggets for the next trip down...dit

Coiltek Will Start Making Coils For White's
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
John makes some of the best coils for the TDI out there. Vast improvement over stock, good sensitivity on small nuggets and very stable. I believe his coils are hand-made, so there is a level of craftsmanship that goes into each one. -
Del, yes, you can still buy factory direct. Sometimes on our facebook we have "flash sales" where you can get things at a discount with a coupon code. But local dealers can often get you the best deal. https://www.whiteselectronics.com/product-category/metal-detectors/

I'll take ya up on that. Just can't have too many IPA's... My Grandma was Mohawk and my blood turns into fire when I drink.

Chuck - when I shot that crash test video the engineer mentioned the weight and made a compelling argument FOR it. Strength = weight, and as far as strength the MXS is a Sherman tank. It would not be able to take such a beating if it weighed 2.5 lbs. I have a Deus in my office that I was considering sacrificing to a similar test but I don't think it would survive a 6 ft drop onto concrete. Some people may have a hard time swinging 4 lbs, and I understand completely. For those people there are lighter machines, as well as options to mount a detector to a wheelchair or walker.

Del, I was having lunch with my wife who works down the street. She has top priority. Internet forums are probably down around #17 or so. But if I have a minute to spare at the office instead of getting a cup of coffee or reading the news I will jump on a forum to see what's crackin'. I'm a big fan of German efficiency... Here is what to look for on hardware - https://www.whiteselectronics.com/product-updates/ We shut the line down until 9-13-16, and used that time to ID, solve, and put measures in place to make sure that once and for all, the MX Sport was a solid choice for seasoned detectorists. We then revamped our production practices and began reworking all machines in stock at the factory and the returns we received from our dealers and distributors. It cost a lot of money but was our responsibility to do so. Since we have a combination of reworked units and new assemblies out in the world, the best advice I can give you is to look over the machine carefully for any cracks. We did what we could to get them all back, but there may be some still out there that need to be worked on. Although the "official" warranty is 2 years, the MX Sport is a special situation. White's will take care of any MX Sport owner with factory issues that we have seen. In my first few months here I was blown away by the generosity and care that White's shows its customers (and the reason I will stay). It's not the most profitable business model, but it is the best way to create life-long customers. If you have any further questions please contact the factory at 1-541-367-6121. It is the best way to get answers fast - sometimes I am out in the field looking for gold or shooting videos.

I am aware of this and have used both Coiltek and Miner John coils for the TDI Pro/SL. That's about all I want to say. -
Every Dog Has His Day With His MX Sport
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Glad to hear the sensitivity helped you pinpoint. There is a park down the road from the factory here in Sweet Home that I call "penny hill." Last time I was testing machines I stopped digging 50-75 VDI range because there was just too many pennies! But maybe I should go back to try and beat the "Penny King"--- https://www.whiteselectronics.com/find/bill-green-the-penny-king/ -
Chuck- shallower targets should be very loud on PP with a ZIP like a GMT if you have VCO on. Ratcheting up the sensitivity is necessary on deep targets, and I bet you anything THAT IS THE FIX for you. I should have mentioned that first! When I swing over a deep target (shown by the coil icon with depth bars) I switch to PP immediately. If the signal is weak I bump up the SENS to max. This drastically changes the machine's response on deep targets. The reason this decision was made is if the PP mode is hard-wired to an arbitrary value, it will either overload on very shallow targets or not bang out on deep targets. So that is left to the user. Weak signals require a bump in power to PP. I would suggest leaving your settings where they are except for the SENS. Try bumping it up in PP on deep targets, I bet you that fixes the problem.
-
Chuck, Have you tried PP with the tracking locked? Sometimes the auto GB will try to tune out deep targets. That's the only thing I can think of. I get a strong signal down to about 10-11" in PP, though it's not as strong as when the target is shallow. The other thing you might check is if VCO is on or off. I prefer VCO since the pitch gives me a better idea of where the center line is on a target.

Hello all. Hit SoOregon this weekend for some pocket hunting and all I found was bullets, more bullets, and poison oak. But the size of the 22 fragments I was finding gave me great confidence in the TDI SL with Miner John's coil. Luckily the factory let me borrow both! Gotta get back out there - we ended up in a great spot with shallow dig holes and were pulling up old square nails, boot tacks, and buttons that were good signs of gold productivity deep in the woods. Last week we shot a video that scared me to film... I was talking with an engineer about the testing process for the MX Sport. How do they figure out what is "tough enough"? He told me to grab the camera and I was a little scared to find the answer out --- especially with some of the nasty stuff people have said about the MX Sport. Not that it was unwarranted. We're in a great place with the machine as it stands right now, in large part thanks to forums like these to help us collect user input and improve the MX Sport. I would not suggest doing some of these tests with other brands' models... Actually, you probably shouldn't do these with ours either. But it's nice to know that we do, and that we build machines to put in work and not get babied---

A Walk Around The Block With My MX Sport Today
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Chuck - we're also having a sale on whiteselectronics.com right now - coupon code is "coil" good for 30% off ANY coil on our site until this Thursday. That 7" Detech is calling your name... -
Now you and I both know White's has never, ever EVER made any mistakes. Ever. I appreciate a good ribbing better than most, but I also like giving it back (all in good fun). Maybe I'm part Australian.... I appreciate your dry wit and I won't ever take it personal. The opposite should hold true ... take everything I say with two big grains of Kosher salt.

A Walk Around The Block With My MX Sport Today
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Chuck, I'll send the cable out this week, free of charge. You'll want the Eclipse 5.3 from the MXT/V3i line. Might be good to look on FleaBay or find a used one. -

tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Chuck, I grabbed you a cable you can use to splice into an existing coil if you're ok with some soldering. I checked with engineering to see if they had any "experimental" small concentrics and they didn't. If you don't like to solder I might be able to do it at home when I get some free time. -
A Walk Around The Block With My MX Sport Today
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Chuck, I have heard and seen people jerry-rigging other coils to work with the MX Sport. This is not officially recommended from the factory due to the special tuning that goes into the MX Sport loops. It is quite a process to watch and requires the use of various gadgetry straight out of Dr. Frankenstein's lab. I can see about getting you a pigtail but not sure I'm allowed to pass along the pin-out details. -
A Walk Around The Block With My MX Sport Today

I hear ya Chuck. If there is enough demand we will build whatever the market asks for. The trouble is how many people will buy it? It's a lot of data to collect and I will work on it. If nothing else maybe I can learn how to wind a coil and make you one myself. -
