DWerk
I have permission to hunt a conglomeration of commercial farm fields in my area. Was speaking with the owner of the lands one day while detecting a migrant worker camp and he told me that he remembered as a teen that he was working one of the fields with his father one day and they both saw a meteor in the sky that they were sure had landed on one of their farm fields! Is/was this possible or probable? I would have been sometime in the late 50's - 60's, maybe 70's. He is able to show which of their fields they thought it may have been. So would I be totally wasting my time looking for something that don't exist? Or could it be a great place to spend some time and see what I could locate.. The fields are still used regularly. sodbuster
Just my opinion, meteorites that seem close are usually not as close as they seem. It could be a couple of miles, or more, away from where they think it landed, if it landed and didn't burn up in the atmosphere. On the other hand, you never know what you'll find in a farm field that has been in longtime use.

Is/was this possible or probable? Possible, yes. Probable? Very difficult to answer given the limited information you were provided. On the plus side, even if that particular event doesn't lead to a find, there's no reason another meteorite might not be in the area you detect. Back around 1980 my parents' farm which happens to be located above a 100 million year old astrobleme (buried crater) was visited by some university geologists trying to get an age on the event. One of them spent his free time searching through rock piles at the edge of farm fields -- large rocks piled up over many decades to get them out of the way of the plows. Over the years he'd had occasional success finding meteorites in those piles. These are exactly the kinds of field and conditions (e.g. shallow depth) you are planning on searching. I say "go for it!"
