Interesting. This data is quite a bit different than what I've been seeing at the beaches using Beach Modes. I came across this older December thread because strick posted a link in the "zinc pennies vs. gold rings" thread.

My crusty zincs and even fresh zincs have been around 80% 59-63. Some stray into the 70's, but not that many at all. Pull tabs can vary a bit more depending on the style tab, but I would say 80% have been 29-33. This is a much more condensed VID range than what strick is seeing. Much easier for me to call a zinc or pull tab before I dig it than what is shown in the graphs above. I can also pretty much call a dime or quarter nearly every time before digging. A dime is around 79-82 and a quarter 89-91. Nickels are almost always 25-27.

I wonder if Beach modes (I use beach low conductors and surf and seawater only) are that much better at identifying targets or if it's just because of the hotter ground conditions strick has and not so much the search modes we are using?

some probably due to the program I was using all terrain general most of the time and these were air tests after the targets were dug. .....zinc pennies don't live too long in a salt water environment so I'd guess that the ones I'm digging in the dirt are a little more degraded...the dirt I hunt will bring the numbers down and you are hunting in clean sand there in the gulf?

The “perceived” target ID stability advantage of the Nox 600/800 over the Nox 700/900/Manticore is one of three pluses for the Nox 600/800. The other two are the situation with wireless audio options and the current available coil options for the Manticore specifically. Otherwise, I definitely prefer the Manticore over the 600/800 and the 700/900.

I agree its a head thing.... less numbers so perceived more stable...I've dug more twist off caps with the Nox 800 then I have with any other machine.....a lot of them will read 14-15 on one of the polluted beaches I hunt...the corroded ones ID will jump around a little but I still dig them because I've found some real big gold rings that were a 14-15 on the nox...  I once met a guy on a clean pollution free beach... we were both using our ctx 3030's...he claimed that every 12.09 he dug was a gold ring... always. Well maybe in his world but not in my aluminum infested parks...I have still used the nox 800 but only because of the small coils..it would be cool if Minelab or whoever would make a 6" round for the M-Core...someday

An observation that I've had; and wondering if anyone else has come to the same conclusion.

The large gold rings that I have recovered this year have had TIDs of 51, 61 and 69.  The 51 is usually outside the range of zinc pennies but depending on oxidation of target and soil mineralization it fits.

The 2d screen is the game changer.  Yes I can hear the difference in smoothness of sound between gold and zinc most of the time.  When in doubt check the screen. Fresh zinc always gets dug because the trace shows no bleeding.

This is why you dig pennies! Just the fat ones...😀  Thoughts?

I think maybe your thinking too much and you got me thinking a little 🙂  I dont remember seeing much bleeding on corroded zinc pennies but I'll pay more attention when I get back to the hunt. I did a chart on corroded zinc a while back the numbers are all over the place...

  4. Jeff- good to see you giving the manticore a go....I look forward to your honest and in-depth reviews and comparisons to other machines...like you I was very impressed with it early on.... In my "stroll in the park with a manticore thread" I mention finding a very small wire looped silver earring at 7 inches with it.

I think you will enjoy using the M-Core...its a great park machine...I'm still on version one as I was happy enough with the way the machine was running but may give the latest version a go...I haven't been on a park hunt in many months...but it just rained yesterday and when work slows down this winter I hope to get back out...At the risk of sounding like a broken record....We need that small coil

Many of us have lots of pinpointers, but nothing beats the ol' Garrett Carrot. Not the wireless one, the standard AT.

My opinion as well although I have not tried every pin pointer in the world the standard Carrot has been my go to for a long time... yes they can break but I attribute it to my neglect (I'm rough on them) I was done trying different pinpointers years ago and now only look to re-supply my stable of garret carrots as needed until another miracle pinpointer comes along...

  6. Cant say that I remember finding the chain after finding the pendant but like you I have tried by circling and digging any thing that makes a peep. A lot of the gold chains I've tested with the Nox and M-Core they will only see the clasp when in park and beach modes...Gold modes will react with  the chains sometimes...Do you remember what those gold pendants numbers were on the M-Core? Nice work!

This video is nothing other than "ring enhancement program".   AKA notching.

SURE !   But this is not telling aluminum apart from gold .

And so you know :  Any TID machine, (from 1983's first Teknetics TID machine to the present) can do the same thing.    There is nothing about that 705 that sets it apart.  And trust me :  When you get to a place where lawn mowers have turned cans into shrapnel, and foil wads abound, then these #'s games go out the window. 🤔  But does it work with "recurring uniform types of junkage" ?  Sure.   But it is not telling aluminum apart from gold.  You will still miss rings and you will still dig aluminum.

Agreed the only thing I ever notch out is the iron..and most of the time I don't even do that and hunt in all metal....

I actually love hunting trashy parks with a small coil...I don't do it exclusively but there are times when I look forward to seeing what I may find that others were too chicken to attempt.. besides the beach is 1.5 hours from me and I can be at a park in 5 minutes...we are all a product of our environment...Let me ask you a question Tom..when you hit an old relic site (house or old ghost town) and you are in a spot covered with nails and other forms of trash do you just ignore it and move to a less trashy spot or do you take your time and pick through the trash?

  8. From Google

    Victorian period

Possibly the most vibrant time for insect jewelry was the Victorian period, ranging from 1837 to 1901. A major reason for this seemingly-random trend was fatigue from the rapid advancement of technology and society as a whole.

A lot of the sash buckles are some sort of butterfly. I guess they paid attention to the little things back then. Heres a some sort of spider broach I found this year at an old mining camp. Not sure how it was attached as there is no pin. Nice work on the seated!

  9. If you hunt polluted areas such as modern parks and trashy beaches and every time you dig a target you think to yourself this is a gold ring then you will be wrong thousands of times. If you hunt the same areas and dig a target and say to yourself this will be a piece of aluminum you will be right thousands of times...and when you are right thousands of times then you begin to think you are a bad ass and can tell the difference between gold from aluminum...I've seen lots of bad asses on the internet.

  10. Nice play by play and reveal Compass! your doing great...lakes are where its at just don't tell anyone lol. FG makes some nice rings... have one in my collection from a park hunt a few years ago. I think I'll call them fools gold from now on...  because any fool that goes out and digs thousands of pull tabs deserves a nice piece of gold once in a while 🙂

Why oh why oh why does any md'rs go to blighted junky parks (where the ratios are punishing) looking for gold rings

Tom have you not heard of the Aluminum Abatement Collective Program? We all must do our share to help clean the environment...It's not always about the gold 🙂

  12. Nice work Compass as usual. Your one of the top Jewelry hunters I've seen on the sites. What you are doing works so don't change a thing.

I've posted this picture before. I was saving pull tabs for a short time but that got old quick. I could not tell you how many there are in the photo nor could I tell you how many hunts or how many gold rings I found during that short time. I have a hard time passing up mid and low conductors that sound good. Many days with nothing but junk to show for my efforts... but it can be rewarding as you know. Nice ring !
