  1. If a coil is made properly then the hot spot should be in the middle, you will find many after market coil have the hot spots all over the place, The early SEF coils were hotter at the back giving them a front to back wedge shaped search pattern and they could not see small nuggets of 0.12 grams some times bigger, I test all my coils and with my machines I only use Whites coils because they are uniform,in their search pattern and I don't want to have to adjust my sweep to suit them, some of those older SEF coils would only see some items at about 3 inches at the front and about 7 inches at the back so that was a huge depth loss on a 12 inch coil, I won't use coils that are uneven because it is tough enough find good things let alone have to triple your sweep coverage to make up for it, hope this helps. john
  2. Well this is how I started looking at it, But then you have to realize that it is not a personal thing and also companies like Whites has under gone quite a few changes so in all fairness they just have to get use to working as a team with all the new faces, They dropped the ball but they were fast to react and they gave minute by minute progress reports, So as far as I see it they are doing the right thing, No it should not of happened but I have made my fair share of cock ups throughout life, And Whites are well on track to making things right, Tom has been here for his daily whooping and he faced the music and survived and because he kept his word we are grateful for his efforts and Whites are slowly coming round to working with us and that has to be a good thing. john
  3. Danny that would be more related to Who does not want to pay the freight, If it is only 7 days old then just ask for a replacement forget about repairs etc, Tell em because you should have a 14 or 30 day cooling off period etc. don't fart about get stuck in, good luck,, John
  4. The trouble with mines is the only metal part in them is the cap or primer because even the firing pin and the springs are made of plastic, That is why the SDC is so hot on small gold, What ever they have planned it will be good, I see in OZ the MOD did sell off a lot of the F3's and the F4A1s and some folks have even had them converted to nugget detectors, Aussie Matt can fill you in on that side of things as I am sure he has the Good Oil on how good they are, john
  5. Yeah I know what you mean, for some reason big coils on mid frequency VLFs do very little in terms of performance, but stick one on a VLF and you can gain up to 30% more depth depending on the machine / coil type, I know there is very little difference between my two apart from when it come to fine gold as in under 0.15 a gram plus or minus, That big concentric I have can see my bare hand at about 7 inches, john
  6. Cool Test, though like you I am a little surprized at the results I would of thought that it would have got that bullet a lot further than that, But I find that you can't run the machines that hot with the Boost running although I just did the Bullet test with the GMT and the MXT, Swinging a test piece in front of the coil will give you lesser results than bringing a test piece up the coils signal path towards the coil, Like as in from 2 feet away then up the middle of the signal path because it upsets the threshold. . The thing that surprizes me the most is that the 6.4khz did not have more of an impact, So maybe those coils are built to favour the higher frequencies, I would of expected that 15" coil to be hitting at around 13 to 14 inches maybe, One thing I have noticed is that Big coils add very little in the way of depth on high kHz machines and they seem to give about the same depth as the standard coil but they do give better coverage but the down side is they can only see bit the size of what a normal hot VLF can,, The best improvement for a high kHz (mid Frequency) machine is to put a concentric on it because on bits under one gram it will make the detector see it up 3 X the distance of the DD, Which might be the secrete behind the Gold Bug II, Out of all my kit that 5x9 Long Scan is my prized piece of kit. Thanks for taking the time to test them all, john
  7. geez Don if those machine don't go too deep I think you are in need of a PI but one that can be used for coin hunting, It will be interesting to see Steve's view on this. john
  8. With Ground readings that low I use the 950/9.5 concentric coil but mainly the 12" coil and only go to a DD if it reads above 75,, If you have the disc set that low the MXT won't miss Gold so it is either there is no Gold there or the problem lies else where,
  9. Thanks Steve, my machines don't save them either So I don't see this as anything other than Normal, J
  10. G'day Ray, I see you have quoted part of one of my posts regarding unmasking and from your post it appears you did better on the Gold Rings with the 6T, I think I see what has been the cause of the problem straight off, If you are missing Gold and Finding Silver then you had your MXT set up the way most US coin hunters do and that is running the Disc up to high, First Rule of MXT is never set you Disc higher than 3 when general searching and if Gold is your Target then NEVER set the DISC above 2, using these settings I bet you can go over that ground and find what you missed, Some Gold Items can come in reading less than Zero, I found a fine Gold and Platinum Ladies ring with 5 Diamonds in it and the VDI was changing between 0 and 4 so running the Disc above 3 would have almost certainly made the MXT say it was Junk and on the older MXTs using the Trigger forward would also knocked out anything in the +10 to +30 ranges because with the trigger forward it is supposed to knock out pull tabs but most Gold rings come in that range so although it is great at hiding pull tabs but at the Cost of Gold as well, using the disc for general searching or coin hunting is a bad habit to get into even more so if a person sets it up just to cherry pick Silver because all the Gold that reads below 70 to 75 will now be found by some other bloke, When you say the ground is highly mineralized what does your MXT say in the prospecting mode ? Welcome to D & P. Hope this helps, john
  11. Steve I read somewhere that the Racer(s) and the Relic do not hold your last settings to memory once they are switched off, Is that true or just speculation by the unknowing ? Thanks.
  12. That's Funny Tom I wonder how much those kind of Temps effect the Battery's as in burn time, 42*f is not much above freezing point of water ? John
  13. Put it this way He won't be wearing speedo's for a while,
  14. What sets the Racer series' apart is they have all the fittings taken from the best of the best and they all come in the one package, with all that and an incredible Display and the choice of coils makes them the first choice for those in the market for a person who does not already own a VLF, I must admit the Gold Racer has really got my attention because it has the most wonderful tone in the Disc mode, although in the AM mode it sounds like my GMT like a Hornet on Crack, either way this company has a huge future ahead of them as long as they keep them selves involved with the public, I think they are a remarkable Company, john
  15. Steve you are spot on there, the presence of Iron or Iron mineralized soil will drag down the VDI's, A quarter reading of +85 +/- if a nail is very close to it The VDI for the coin can and does drop down to as low as +16 maybe more, There is a little trick that will allow you to unmask Items with the MXT because it has Rotary controls Where you might use the Relic mode for Prospecting We ALL tend to turn the Disc right down and IE- use a rusty 2" nail and then turn up the Disc until the nail makes a Low tone which sets the Disc very close to "2" But I have found that once you do that you can then turn it down to about 1.8 which sets the Disc right on the Edge and allows the Detector to unmask coins and other targets, Doing this the detector will signal on the coin if you place a Nail on the coin regardless of which direction the nail is pointing and it will signal on the Coin 98 times out of a hundred. This is all due to the Type of controls it has, Because depending which way you are turning the Controls it appears they have a microscopic overlap where the knobs over compensate hence why you can back it off to 1.9 to 1.8 and unmask things right on the edge of discrimination and it also helps with finding hammered coins due to their low conductivity, As we pointed out in recent posts about push button machines having pre set disc levels because each press moves the disc in set amounts, But Rotary controls allow a person to work within those pre sets., hope that helps john,
  16. Because of 99% of Iron is just junk I would rather see the Non ferrous targets start at 0 +/- and all ferrous objects be below that line and shown as a - VDI reading, it makes no sense to put Iron above Zero, This is another reason I don't use other machines. On the Sovereign GT I had the 170/180 meter and most coins came in between 126 and 170 and 8 out of 10 coins came in between 158 to 170, and the 4 tone ID was less than Ideal, Now I only use 2 Tone ID or with Iron Blanking, either dig or no dig with the Iron showing up as negative numbers, I think it was FT who came out with the 0 to 99 system I had an F4 and the fact that Iron above zero seemed crazy, A bit like C & F Temp system, when you consider that we are about 85% water and water freezes at 0*c it makes more sense to use that system where as at 0*F we would be long past dead,, Alcohol freezes at 0*F most of us are not made up of alcohol, I just think that these machines should be setup in the same way. john
  17. Tom, Hold back on the skinny dipping, useless your detector is waterproof,
  18. Have no Doubts, The MX-Sport Will be a force to be reckoned with, Like Steve said tweak one thing and you have to start the re testing all over again, even after all these years Whites updated the software in the GMT about 18 months 2 years ago, So I know there will be other on going fine tuning with the MXS because they have been doing that to the MXT and the GMTs and they are 16 years old, So it just goes to show with WHITES that just because a product has been in production for many years that they are always look at how they can keep those products at the top of the Tree. 2 or 3 years down the track we will just how hot the MXS can be and it won't stop there. john
  19. Company's need to realize that when you Guys put these machines through their paces that you do it for a few reasons, One being that you really want it to be the all seeing eye and the best it can be, and if you are allowed to add your input and those changes get installed in to the machine then we will see more Ground breaking Technologies come in to play, I know how serious I am about these machines , So with the likes of you and Des that really steps things up a gear and this is more than just a job to you guys because you live and breath it 24/7, Although some field testers work directly for the Company's, You Guys are our last hope in having a World Class Product so the more your report any issues the more Value for money the customer gets, I don't care about magazine reviews because they are more related to how the Reviewer can side step any short falls without offending the Company's along with keeping a product in a positive light for the reader, I don't think there is one of Yours or Des's reviews that I have not read from cover to cover many times over, It is a shame you guys did not have a hand in this, I am sure even I could of done my bit, john.
  20. I don't know how long it took to get the MXS to production, But I know it took over 2 years to Iron out the wrinkles out of the MXT before in went in to production And when you look at the people involved with that project from Dave Johnson, Jimmy Sierra and many others, Which is why the MXT is a True work horse and it is as close to a prospecting machine as you can get without buying a mid frequency machine, And it was the first True multi-purpose machine made, I have used it from Australia to the north of England in the Blood red soils in OZ to the thick black peat Bogs of the north Yorkshire moors to Flint and Iron infested Neolithic 5000 year old sites, Are there better machines ?? Not for how or where I use it, Others will find that it just doesn't fit their needs, I met a guy who I found out was raiding certain sites and he turned up on one of my sites with his XP GMP and I followed about 200 yards behind him he found nothing and I found 8 coins 2000 years old and I followed one rep and his mate and I dug all the targets he walked over. The point I am making here, Is the MXT was Designed and built by very serious people for very serious people, It is simple to Run and Gun there are no Gimmicks and if you are Serious about what you are looking for like me then nothing else will do, And by now I must have well over 4000 hours invested in the MXT maybe more but not once have I ever gone home empty handed, The first day I ended up with 16.1 grams of Gold day 2 I found Silver a pendant and the about 5 OZT of Silver in old Coins and by the 3rd week I had Located a Roman Villa, To me it is not a metal detector, It is a Tool and a Very effective one at that, Could I use any other machine ? Yes but not with the same amount of confidence and effectiveness because I know it so well and if my finds are slowing down then I know that I am the weak link in the chain and I can correct that, There are a few little useful tricks with the MXT you can use to unmask wanted targets and I have left many folks scratching their heads when I turn up with a 12 inch coil on a site where you can hit 20 targets per sweep, and when people ask me what I am using I just play it down and dismiss it and carry on searching, I had a friend come over from south Africa for a holiday and within and hour and a half he had his first Hammered Cut half penny using my spare MXT and his finds were from the 1800s back in SA and then he is over here finding Coins from the 1200s AD, The real problem with the MXS is it was released a month too soon and I think that Whites really needed Honest Constructive feedback from the field testers, If that machine had been put in the hands of certain people here I am confident enough to put up $1000 and say that these problems we have seen would have never of happened, There are some very skilled people here and at lease 3 of them are the reason why I have bought certain machines in the past and when you look at the cost of what this has caused Whites moneywise I think it would be a profit making Idea if Whites worked with such people because these extra freight bills and the Teachie's time to correct any Issue's / faults could have been Avoided, Have no fear because I truly believe that the MXS will be way better than it was, I think I am more P'd off at being put in a situation where I have had to Bitch Slap an old friend because that was going against what I know and believe in about Whites and that video was the straw that broke the Camels back and knowing that the machine was not hitting on all 8 cylinders left a bitter after taste with me, Now if only I can find out who gives the orders at Whites and send his Mrs some flowers with a card getting her to suggest to him about moving that Phone socket to the back of the Battery Box john
  21. That's Cool Tom thanks for that, Im going to buy another one just because, One has standards to up hold you understand john
  22. I really want Whites to bounce back at full speed, It is a good company and they found me Gold where other were walking over it and I was finding stuff 2000 years old when (Every) other person/brand was missing them, So I have not given up but I will be Annoyed if they stop making the MXTs. john
  23. I must admit my Bite is worse than my bark, And I do have an Extremely short fuse to say the least The MXS will Never be an MXT and the MXT can't Swim, so it has no chance of being an MXS, And what you say is true because it's competitors are made by 2 company's with a first class heritage, That Video was the first bout of the 2 being compared to each other and that never sat well with me, But I proved it not to be so and I can live with that, Whites is always tweaking their products even when they don't put out an update for them, I have that in writing directly from Whites and Like all their products I have no doubts that they will have this one firing on all cylinders within 6 months to a year and they won't just leave it there either, there will be official software up grades and it will just become better and better, So All Is Good,, Just don't upset my MXT, you wouldn't like him when he's Angry, He goes all Green
  24. Tom I will be looking in to the MXS as soon as Whites has caught up with those folks that are first in line, But over here ( UK ) we are a b it behind the US so when they have played catch up life will be good, I am also chasing the 808, not that I need it but it makes sense to get it because it completes the picture, john
