djsky77
Hello I was wondering what the chances are or if there are meteorites In Southern Illinois because I believe I read on the internet that's her only really in mainly like five states and only 1900 a year found in the US. But I found a picture of one on the internet and what I have to me resembles it but others have told me it's slag I'm not sure so I was just looking for any advice It didn't make a mark on a ceramic tile on the back of it the first picture I'm going to put the meteorite picture off the internet and then I'll put a picture of what I have that I believe looks like it any info is appreciated and then I put a pic of the inside after I cut it open and I've never seen an earth rock look like this thing looks inside and I busted open thousands Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26162-are-there-meteorites-in-southern-illinois/ Share on other sites
MD4V.org
In my opinion, the first photo is NOT a meteorite, nor are the last photos. Bubbles don't form on meteorites. Metal (iron) meteorites show "Regmaglypts" which are shallow depressions or dimples that form on the surface as they pass through Earth's atmosphere. Do some more research, and look up "Strewn Fields of Illinois." 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26162-are-there-meteorites-in-southern-illinois/#findComment-276486 Share on other sites

It's not a rock nor a meteorite, it's slag. An artificial glass like substance left over from smelting operations. It's often found along transportation routes like highways or railroads as it bounces out of trucks and cargo holds on the way to disposal sites. There is a lot of slag in Illinois and that’s what you have. Quite a few people post slag here thinking they have found a meteorite but it looks nothing like a real meteorite. Sorry, not a meteorite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slag https://sites.wustl.edu/meteoritesite/items/slag/ https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/3334-meteorite-identification-101/ 5 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26162-are-there-meteorites-in-southern-illinois/#findComment-276487 Share on other sites
