Is this for real? I understand how a dog could find certain mineral deposits by their scent, that’s pretty obvious even by our noses, particularly when it rains in the desert, but to use dogs to find precious metal deposits? Has anyone successfully done it or seen it being practiced in places such as Arizona mentioned in the article? https://www.mining-technology.com/analysis/featureore-sniffing-dogs-for-mine-location/ -especially laughed at the part saying that you can’t use a Chihuahua to do these types of searches because they’d be eaten by rats! 😂

Hi Jeff. It’s good shipping worked out safe for you. I got mine at a discount too, but made sure that it was covered. I got worried about it ever since I had a microscope sent to me in pieces, and the insurance coverage was less than what it cost to repair. So now I insure everything to the fullest extent it would cost me to replace it. I’m not sure how much the control box would’ve cost to replace, I sent mine in that way too. Looking forward to hearing about how yours is working out, I think mine definitely improved. -Anthony

Yeah I’m surprised he did that, insurance for a $6000 detector was over $100 when you mail it that way.

Yeah, I guess I need to trade mine in also Gerry, it’s a lousy gold detector- all it has been getting is birdshot, even more now with the update.😉

GPAA had a lifetime membership/free Gold Monster deal a while back- reselling my new and unopened GM from them made the lifetime membership pretty inexpensive. After the speaker modification on my 6000 I’m not thinking of selling it anymore, so that’s fine for Minelab. Besides there’s a well known dealer/tester-trainer on here that sells really nice used equipment and that is quite a great deal also.

Yeah, I really do like it now and all but as a gold detector, why did they have to go and make it so darn sensitive to lead birdshot? 🤔

Well, after digging a lot of tiny birdshot on my most recent outing, I think the speaker mod was a good thing - I made a mistake on the survey and should have clicked on it made an improvement instead of I wasn’t sure. The improvement was subtle when actually swinging it with Bluetooth on for mine, but it was obviously much better when digging a target with the detector laying still on the ground. I don’t think sensitivity was affected either- I found small birdshot buried several inches down when using both the 5x9” Coiltek and the Minelab 11” mono. Overall I am now quite happy with the 6000, and when asked if I would consider an Axiom, I am definitely not sure about that. It would really depend on how the field reports go from the general public after the first year it’s out, especially from others who have used both detectors. Oh and one last thing, I wish the modification made it more sensitive to gold than to birdshot! 😁

Ah, they have a lot more to diagnose on yours- my turnaround time was probably short as the coil ears were obviously cracked and they could tell by my early serial number that it needed an update due to speaker feedback.

Where there any issues with the coil you sent back to them?

Just over a week? That’s normal. Don’t go by the updates on the notes, they didn’t update mine until the day they shipped it - it was just a little over a week also.

Hey that survey stinks! 😄 People that don’t care and aren’t going to get it done are throwing the numbers off on number 2 and 3 questions. You can’t really compare whether it works or not when somebody doesn’t get it done- Unless you’re using that as a control group….🤔

The only BS I could share about it is showing how big the lunker is that I found and couldn’t fit in my mouth after I get to use it on a real goldfield for the first time since the upgrade this weekend…or maybe hopefully it won’t be BS 😏

5G cell service has permeated much of the US by now, probably not so in Australia. I suspect it’s another culprit. Also being up high on mountains may increase your exposure to microwave repeaters, those are common on mountain peaks to beam telecom signals over them. Since microwaves only work line of sight, as you walk around different valleys, hills and peaks, you’re going in and out of their different shadows.

Just curious, you didn’t mention if you were using it with the internal speaker or with headphones. I assume you were using the internal speaker only? If so, is there any possibility it was a random coincidence that there happened to be a jet flying nearby? I’m pretty certain in the videos I posted earlier on this thread that there were no jets overhead when my threshold went crazy after each time I turned the Bluetooth speaker off enabling the internal speaker. I was at the bottom of a remote and steep canyon to get away from all EMI as possible where I videotaped it. In my case at least it was the internal speaker causing feedback and Minelab’s fix solved the problem. I can now use the external speaker and mono coils with no speaker feedback issues. On another note, I’m sorry you had to sell it and I hope it wasn’t because of the feedback issue, hopefully you got a good price for it. I wonder how many other people sold theirs below market value because of this and not knowing there would be a repair for it later on. At least they’re probably looking at getting axioms which would be a good alternative, so things may have worked out better in the long run.

No kidding! I worked as a helper on an archaeological dig and we had to hand excavate a bunch of 1 x 1 x 1.5 meter deep pits. I was sore after just the first one. Some of the ideas here seem pretty good, the main ones are start out sampling with random points in the entire yard until you have sampled a dense enough pattern, and then start gridding it afterwards. By doing random sampling you’re more likely to hit something if you’re short of time.

You’re right- an old PI unit like a GP 3500 with a large coil could find something large several feet under. I was really asking if ‘any’ type of two-box detector would work at the depths a target like the one mentioned and just posted an example of the first two-box I saw listed here in the detector database. I didn’t know Garrett also made one- that one would be my choice if I needed one.

Wouldn’t a 2-box detector like the Fischer Gemini-3 be a viable option for this type of detecting?

I found that some of their updates are not too timely, my detector was being returned the same day it showed as serviced.
