That’ll also be me waiting in the longer wait line for anything expensive and hot off the press from anyone for now on. Since I was never in the race to beat everyone with the best in the goldfields near me, I know now I really should have waited. I did get a good deal on my detector and good service from my dealer, so I’m not upset or anything like that about it, just disappointed in the machine a bit.

… so they are doing board level repairs? That’s labor intensive and ripe for errors! It would be interesting to see what they did to fix it after my warranty runs out.

The chokes (1) make sense, and the coil (2)- but what is that “possible” part?

The only way to put videos here is if you upload your video to a site like Vimeo or YouTube first then just post a link to it here. That’s what I did with my video above showing the built-in speaker instability issue. while you’re at it also check your coils for ear cracks, you have a three-year warranty on those as well.

🤔 Could Gerry have been adopted? That kinda stuff runs in a family, and the nut doesn’t fall very far from a tree.

So how did it compare while sitting on the ground to the parts of my video with it just running the built-in speaker?

I just looked at my coils too and low and behold, there are cracks on my 11” mono ears also. Luckily there’s a three-year warranty on the coils so I am going to wait a little while before I turn it in as I just spent a lot of money returning the control box for repairs. Besides, I’ve been mainly using my Coiltek 10x5 on it instead.

That next day must’ve been expensive! I just sent them only my control box the same way you did via UPS freight with full insurance and it cost $170. 🙄 It would’ve cost a lot more if I had to include all that other stuff like that generic letter asked. I also emailed them a copy of what Simon posted and a link to my video, hopefully that helps them diagnose the problem and agree that it needs the new hardware update.

No I think it was just a generic service letter, same thing they send for all detectors. Yours was much more specific for just the issue. I guess I’ll have to wait and see what I get. I’m just hoping to save a lot of money on shipping by only sending the box.

@jasong Hi Jason, How did you send your 6000 back to US Minelab, did you just send them the main box like illustrated in Simon’s post or the entire unit with the 1st rod and control pod still attached, and a battery and coil? The person who sent me the return information didn’t seem to know about the tear down info Simon posted and just sent a generic service letter that asks for battery and coil to also be sent and does not mention the tear down information and requires quite a longer box for shipping! I was rather surprised at the difference a external speaker makes however, so if you really don't need it then yeah, I'd keep your hunt going for the remainder of your season. I don't anticipate being able to go for awhile and have a backup detector if I do get the opportunity, so I am going ahead with the update. I will post about the results when I get them.

I don't think I will be using my 6K for awhile so I initiated the repair request and am sending mine to the US Service center this week - they just sent me the instructions for sending it in - I just recorded a short video to show the threshold stability differences between using the built in speaker and a wireless Bluetooth speaker. I never realized it until I started using the built in speaker when I forgot to charge my Bluetooth speaker one day. It is quite the difference, and as others here have said, it becomes rather unusable with the threshold doing this. I do have to thank the people at both the AU and US Minelab service centers for their help getting my repair request started. I will post a similar video showing the results of the servicing when it is returned.

As far as I experienced, the headphones are fine, it’s when I use the speaker that I have the issues. If that doesn’t bother you maybe wait until you can part with your detector for a while. You probably have at least two years left on your warranty like I do, so if you’re not planning on selling your detector anytime soon and it’s working well for you with headphones then I don’t think you have to be in a hurry to get it serviced. There may be a backlog building up though so keep that in mind too.

Contacted both, got a reply almost immediately. Their service people are really helpful.

You know, as I wrote that first post I rechecked my email inbox and just saw that I received a reply back from the AU Service Center. So my detector is in the affected lot and needs the mod. They said they’d confirm when I could get it repaired and get back to me with information about how and when I can send it to their US service center. That’s a great start, and they’ve always been very good whenever I’ve sent them a question.

Jason, have you received your updated 6000 yet? Interested in hearing how it works out for you.

It would be sad though Rob if Bill S.’s forum closed along with all of Jim Straight’s archive. Yours also has some great information too. I haven’t checked but hopefully the wayback website archived most of it.

Maybe you should hardface your coil covers like you would with your buckets?😁 But seriously, I used pipe wrap tape on mine. It works well, but yeah, first time I felt I had to do that on the bottom of a coil.

Oh wow, I saw that photo in the past and I always thought it was of Jim Straight. Thank you for correcting me. Jim Stewart certainly had his hands full with that unit! Jim Straight was a local here in California, he pioneered electronic detecting in our region along with some others back in the 80’s. He wrote some well-known books including dry washing and hard rock prospecting. One was called “Follow the dry washers” about prospecting techniques as well as detecting tailing piles. A lot of people on this forum knew him well including Steve and Lunk. I wondered about those eucalyptus trees… I’m curious, is the receiver coil on that CC 15-inches? I wonder how close other people can work near it with their detectors?

James, was that photo of Jim Straight and the Bismarck taken in Australia? If so, I didn’t know he took it there with him, or was it a local product? Now that I’m looking closer at the photo, I see eucalyptus trees all around him. It could’ve just as likely been taken here in the US, your weeds are all over the place here in California! Your 26” looks like it has pretty good sensitivity From your photo but it’s hard to tell size, what was the weight of the smallest nugget you recovered with it?

I’ve helped out Bill S. with a fundraiser on his site but he’s rarely on it anymore if at all too. A couple of good and knowledgeable members are the only ones keeping it alive now days. Bill keeps an archive of Jim Straight’s posts and a great meteorite thread alive on it, so I still visit often. But I have to admit I more often come here because of all the great information and help here.
