Klunker is right, the nails will be only head high unless the tree was fallen already.

The logs are in piles.  He's going to take them one at a time and roll them as he checks them. 

He only wants to detect 16 feet up from the bottom cut.  For some reason he wants it to penetrate 12".  I think 9" is good.
