  1. Actually I do have a question/observation on ground type. Hardly a qualified observation as I'm only practicing till I get into the area I'll be swinging this year but I've noted EMI is much easier to handle here in the East in Difficult without much adjustment to sensitivity from default on targets in the .5 and below range up to a foot down. In Normal I have to dum down sens a bit to get similar results. High yield and General though General is giving me more chat. Addendum: this is with smoothing off. Increasing levels of smoothing seem to have to correspond with slight increases in sens but that seems to have been noted elsewhere. How is this working out in the wild for anyone in high EMI areas?
  2. The author of that post makes some very good observations on the handling and care of the detector as well as its performance. To bad about the coil but it can be expected from time to time I'll reckon just like the battery issue posted on here. Hope his mate is back in action.
  3. I thought the target was a small bit of wire for sure The Zed really does have some funny sounds for targets up close. Guess I don't have to worry about detecting thru logs Good score Peteren!
  4. Klunker you just have to pick up a book on how to speak Australian Then keep reading the aussie forums but don't ask a question you are not prepared to decipher or they'll lead you down a path and attack you with drop bears.
  5. Rabbit holes indeed GB, Thanks for the update. You make a very important observation that I see missing in other posts. Your Quote : l can honestly say the 4500 Enhance handled hot pockets and hot rocks better than the GPZ using audio smoothing off, it also loves charcoal and moisture rich tree roots. : End quote. The "it" I am assuming *and if it makes an ass of me well..." is that the GPZ has a similar taste in materials. Its the last part of the quote that no ones really saying anything about but something that's understood by many detectorists. Charcoal, moister rich roots and the fact that plants often concentrate minerals around the roots are something that the GPZ see's to some extent. No amount of ground balancing that I know can eliminate these responses. I'll tie that with another post that has observations of heel to toe coil movement to balance something of this helps sort it out. Not to eliminate but makes the GPZ less responsive such items. Not sure how it will work over hot clay domes and the such.... your observation tells me that you still have to dig it out to clear up what your hearing. My thoughts.
  6. Hate to sound like a doink but leaving any battery on a charger for days (7 or better) and months on end is a bad recipe for anyone. A few days ok but extended time frames lead to battery memory *not so true for LI systems but just as bad if they fail* or just plain bad broken equipment. Follow the recommended procedures by the manufacture. Period. All batteries will degrade over time but constant charging is just a knife to the throat for any of them. Storing batteries is similar... try not to store them for more than a couple of months at full charge.... discharge to 50 percent if your not going to use them for more than 3 months. Of course no on will listen or do it but hey the darn things last years and years if you just pay attention. My thoughts.
  7. Very informative, Thank you Steve. I've been watching the Nokta line for a while now, thinking of ditching my DFX for it. I'm inclined to go back to the GTI but these detectors from Nokta have had me in snits from the observations. At the same price and with just a bit of tweeking it seems you've uncovered something I can't get from observation.... and a limited *god the GPZ was a pitch HAHH* funds I've got on hand. I love the GTI's depth and target analysis however its a flop when you get off reservation and try for minerals and metals in some very hot country. DFX is no prom queen either off reservation in the areas I've trudged about.
  8. Hehh Bugger all I might have more than a few pints while I'm there and see if X marks the spot. But I'll keep my GPS in my hiddy hole. Never Truer words aussiedigger *welcome to the camp fire*, Good on ya *and this coming from a yank who's been there done that and wishes you heaps* mate! Let the other blokes in the forums there shoot the bluey and have a chunder when you wave a paw full of gold like that! HAHHHHH! Hope you get over the sick and get in the thick before long. Most excellent the young'un had a fine christening with the Zed. Me and my mate will be out West this *summer here* winter but your welcome to come and have a cuppa. DD
  9. I wonder if it contains calibration data for the coil in particular aside from just what coil is there. Or will that cal data be part of a software upgrade for particular chips.... hrm...
  10. I'm just using wide vinyl tape myself. For me its just habit to keep my coils sealed. Does not have to look good just has to keep the dirt out.
  11. Whether its addressed to me or not these are my thoughts : I'm pretty sure I said its a useful myth. It has some practical application in that those who follow it find it easier to visualize their activity with some result. Simple is better for some. Perspective not conversion is why I felt the view was worth the airing. Observed results that conform to mythical patterns seem to work for some reason. I also understand the need to state the facts. Facts and faith both are powerful drivers. I feel little need to break out a slide rule or explain the differences of various wave forms, their propagation or explain the mathematics of such. *shurgs* In this thread anyrate. Now I'm going to sound defeatist in this but this is way further off topic than I anticipated. I almost regret having said anything at all. Holiday Inn indeed I'm hoping to see the result of GB's second check on the video in question. I feel reasonably certain it was hot ground and a few other factors that stunned him and his mate. The GPZ is not immune to hot ground from what I've been observing but its a heck of a lot better at tackling it. My thoughts, and No I'm not really put out by the discussion. Hehh The GPZ's ground balancing capabilities tied to other posts and advice are probably one of the least understood facets of the machine. Signals and settings follow right along. Thanks, DD
  12. Appreciate the input GB Thanks. Yeah the white paper would have put a halt a lot of things, but there's still plenty to chew on. May I ask why you were stunned? Steve I feel the myth holds some validity. I've some understanding of the complexities of wave forms however the mythology works for a visual, and in a few ways a practical, way of training the mind on how a pattern is set up when working with various coil designs. I've seen square coils and triangular ones as well but its the way the fields are set up relative to the receiver that make the difference. Where the sweet spots are if you will. The GPZ coil will pick up targets on the fringes if they are large enough just like a mono but it wont sing... only sound as a break in threshold hum. It wont sing like a mono till the sweet spot is hit along the middle~ a blade. Mono's will pick up targets as well on the fringe but dependent on depth will often sing out at the edge, mid or center of the coil so you've a cone visual. DD's do the same thing but on the center line. Basically proximity and depth relative to the area of highest sensitivity. My thoughts. As to pinpointing most of us are aware of the how mono and normal DD coils hit. The GPZ makes it a little trickier. I for one am still working on the sweet spot(s) So I go with a blade mentality as it works for my visualization in nabbing the target.
  13. Zed= Blade similar to the DD profile but with a double positive when targets are presented from side to side. I have not been able to track out a good target in testing yet however I'm not testing in hot soil. For me its testing till I get in the gold fields this summer. One thing I would like to see return if its possible is a mono function like that for using DD coils. Don't know if its possible but it would help for pinpointing with the edge. Targets seem to present themselves at the front of the hole or to the side on itty bitties.
  14. Thanks, Fair enough in what I said may overstate the safeguards built into lithium batteries. Depends on the manufacture. I've made LI power supplies for my SD and GP as well as other stuff I play with. The charger is the primary safe guard that prevents over charging however I have used LI battery packs that will cut out after a certain threshold is hit during charging. Most have a cut out built into the batteries if they are drained to far or to fast as well. Generally fuses though many are chipped. Largely they are manufactured with simple cut outs for rapid drainage as that is the most hazardous problem when cells short or a short circuit occurs to the power supply output. A similar problem occurs when the batteries are drained past a certain point as this can cause the battery to short out as well. Overcharging does the same thing as the cells short out due to excess's in energy storage and rapidly discharge problem here though is that the charger is still pumping energy into the battery if its a dumb charger. Most LI chargers nowadays are smart chargers. The early one's I worked with and the cheap stuff now are problematic to work with. I doubt ML skimped on the charger but like any piece of electronics glitches and hitches will occur.
  15. Information is that GB is an averaged item. From what I've experienced this is so. As the video goes on the averaging continues and eventually the signal is lost even with the inadvertent pumping that occurs when dipping into a small hole. Other video's show the same pumping on good targets but the target is not lost. A hot spot is a hot spot and the GPZ is only a bit less immune to them than current PI's... goes to show the advice JP and others are pointing out... the GPZ is not a PI in the classic sense. Again I'll point out that there was no re-doing of the GB in the video, one would have heard it in the audio of the recording by the cut out. There was not one nor any attempt to Quick track the GB. GP and GPX audio are different in the GB signal when working them. What gets me is the other GPZ in the video. I'm sure his mate took a swing.
  16. In the first 10 seconds he gets a tone one way but not the other. After that he's dipping into the hole which will cause a positive on any machine. When he does wave over the hole after a bit of a dig the tone goes away for the most part. Hot spot. My thought. His wave over the digs also gives a faint response. He did not rebalance from what I see.
  17. It would be a rare occurrence if the battery overcharged. Lithium batteries are set up to prevent such occurrences because they are so reactive. Its more common for them to short out or for their control circuitry to get buggered. Same for the charger. But hey a small delay and another detector to dirty up while giving ML a chance to work out a potential kink. Hehh.
  18. I've not found anyone who's selling extra parts and pieces....
  19. Much appreciated I'll look into that Gold hound Last go down under I had the first set of Bates separated and I gorilla glued them and ordered another set, that set to separated. I got by on glue, and re-gluing till the end of the trip but what a pain.
  20. Bound to be a few bad batteries about. But sending in the whole unit? Did you try charging the GPZ battery on the CTX charger?
  21. Engraved in stone JP. I guess I was not very clear on why I think the way I do. Hopefully the previous posts are not seen as to disrespectful.
