  1. Metal detecting and fishing, two Virginia favorites. 👍 They probably threw them in the river due to the crackdown on unserialized pistols. Thanks Lynyrd Skynyrd! 😵 Great photos DC, I think Jeff has you covered. They wouldn't have tossed it if it was a Colt. 😀 Here's a pic of the little guy:
  2. From what live beach results I've seen lately with other newer machines, we already don't have that much to worry about. 😎 It's sad but kinda a thrill to have another detectorist ask me if I'm finding anything because he isn't. I just say "I'm doing all right"... 🤷‍♂️ I would hope adjusting reactivity would sort this out, but it really doesn't, and the higher you go you begin to lose the deeper stuff. That's always been the deal relic hunting, and I agree with the Cap'n that higher sensitivity gets you fringe targets outside the swing that are worth investigating.
  3. Yeah I'm not going to say it's the be all and end all, but... This last update does seem to be a pretty good one. I do miss the simplicity of V.71 but am enjoying the wider parameters and extra settings, especially audio filter which meshes PWM and square. I took the time to go in the water today as well, and have good to say about the Diving program, it's very quiet until it doesn't need to be. This on a tip from PI-Man and his 18k banner day. This place is barren of good finds until it isn't, and it cleanly nailed two pennies in waist deep water. If there was anything out there I would have found it. I got the shiny Zincoln in the dry, and the quarter in the parking lot. The parking lot is loaded with coins but also with aluminum bottle tops and pull tabs. I have to be willing to dig in gravel. Any time there is trash there the county mowing service just shreds it. 🤬
  4. Ok, my turn. 😀 Took the D2 and 13" to my local beach this morning with a tent stake and a shiny new clad quarter. Beautiful white river sand here. Set Beach sensitive up with full tones and everything else Cap'n did, and buried the quarter and stake. I used the typical one I find: The only program that caught the quarter on the edge of the coil was my modified General program with audio filter at 5. Only on the edge of the 13". I could literally sweep the edge back and forth and get a 93, get close to the center and iron. A 6/7. Some times it would average and I'd see a 58 or something in the 50s. Changed reactivity, changed audio response individually, changed iron audio, nada in beach sensitive. Tried disc and notch separately, still a no go. Turned Audio filter up and got a click before and after the iron tone, reactivity 2. All this was with sensitivity at 95. Guess I added a new sound to my dig repertoire, iron grunt with click might be a hit. 😀 Any high tone with iron makes me suspicious anyway since V1.1. Then I thought, "How far does the stake have to be away from the 13" to allow the quarter to be found? 🤔 The answer is pretty far, like 8", unless you catch the coin on the heel of the coil, it nails it. Closer the tip is the more it will go to iron. There is a distinct advantage to using a larger coil on a tent stake beach, the edges pick up stuff. Some short wiggling is in order, keep the edge on the target. I'm sure this scenario is pretty limited, heck you can use General in the dry. Most tent stakes are in the dry anyway, right? Ok, now I'm gonna duck and cover 🤣
  5. Good one Kaolin, this is only about the 3d time someone posted a $1 coin find that I can recall, myself included. Those are meant to be in collections, not on a beach. 😀 The Aussies are rolling on the floor, a typical hunt is in dollars not sense (pun intended) 😏
  6. Kudos, Karma, and other Krap to ya, PI. Excellent sleuthing and perseverance to find the owners, told ya a square diamond is big bucks. Depending on the sizing my wife might have had the engraving buffed out 🤣 You're a great person and deserve a long and happy life, also a credit to the hobby. 👍 Keep Digging! Soon enough there will be one or two you don't feel bad about keeping 🙂
  7. Yep, if she's got Monday off, she gets another chance to really blow it. 🤣 Apparently she was on thin ice already. Everyone deserves some initial kindness, but were I to find her stuff again I might be a bit more reluctant to return it. I do wonder why she just opened the door 😀 especially so scantily clad. Not exactly the clad I was looking for. 😁
  8. Thanks Mark, It takes a while (from experience 😀) to realize what fools we have been in life. Sometimes it's meeting the right person, sometimes it's a bolt of lightning (a metaphor). Sadly for some it is a nirvana never realized 😏
  9. Pretty sure whoever was with her would have objected 🤣 Very odd situation.
  10. I had hoped for a more pleasant reaction and interaction, but after being told by two people she was trouble, I guess it was for the best the encounter was short. I would have photographed the contents of the phone case (ID, credit cards) and the person who took it back. The staff didn't want to do it. 😀 We did briefly and in hindsight consider taking an advance reward at the casino, breakfast and some gambling perhaps. 🤔 I might have got more coins from a slot machine.
  11. Yes, not quite the fairy tale I envisioned. 🦄 Thought it might be amusing to show the cloudier side of recovery. 😂
  12. Nah I don't pick up bottles and flip-flops. 🤣 gotta have some standards 😎
  13. A funny thing happened at the beach today, I was to meet up with Chase at a local beach, one I now dub the "Beach of Low Expectations". I was detecting the beach cut in front of a motel, and saw a flip-flop, a half empty Corona bottle, and an iPhone. Sure enough the phone worked, and had ID and credit cards in a pocket on the case. I asked a woman nearby if it was hers, and she said no, but she thought it might belong to a woman who was very drunk and noisy on the beach the night before. I took the phone to the motel office and asked if the woman was staying there, and the manager said yes, the people were still checked in. She said I could bring it up to her room, and mentioned they were trouble. I decided to take it myself being the fearless individual I am 😏 Went to the room and knocked, once, twice, finally 5 times when I heard "GODDAMN IT" and someone coming to the door. It was the woman, nearly naked, not sure if she was wearing much at all. I tried not to look at anything but her face, first time someone looked better in their license photo than in person. 😀 I said "You might want this back", and that was all I could get out, she said "Thank you", took it, and closed the door. Yikes. 🤣 I went back out to the beach, Chase had got there, and I dug very little. 😵 .68, a copper arthritis ring (ID'd by my wife), and a bling earring. 🤷‍♂️ That was my Karma for returning someone's life. 🙄 We still had a fun day, the weather was great, and there were lots of nice people out there today. I think we did better than the other detectorists from what they said.
  14. Nice you got a "Bertie" coin, the son of Queen Victoria. 👍 I dug one of those a year or two ago. They're huge. Awesome amount of silver, they should have seeded some Zincolns to keep it real 😏 great hunt Cap'n!
  15. Very nice hunt Jeff, and you couldn't be more right about the coin capabilities of the D2. 👍 I have full confidence that if it is there it will find it.
  16. That's a heckuva story RVP, Thanks. I'll have to check that tick spray out. Best way to get around em is not expose yourself, but we can't hide in caves. 😀 Probably get them in there too. 🤔 Do you cross the knee pad straps? Initially I didn't, but now that I do they never slip. Top to bottom and bottom to top. Makes an "X" that keeps them in place. I use the more powerful LED lights, Thrunite, Nitecore and others. They're all over the house. 😀 Need a bright one here for those nighttime stalkers. 😬 I dig round-ish holes and brush the local "camo" over the plug when replaced. Only off center holes are a problem, but I do my best to mask them. I used Hawaiian Tropic 70 sunscreen at the campground, the deer flies didn't like it much, and I smelled like a coconut instead of a vile oily rag.
  17. Thanks Cap'n, I pitied myself the first couple days but then hunted smarter. Also grid searched the tent areas that were empty because of the bear, they were telling people about it. Tent areas are closer to the dumpsters where the bear visited nightly. The other surprise was the place I got a lot of coins last year, just kept hitting more. Something was happening in that spot where a lot of money was dropped. Looking at the old aerials shows nothing in particular. Could be that V1.1 is far superior to V.71 too. Even with the 13" i was able to pluck coins out of trashy areas.
  18. Thanks Mark, I really exceeded last year's total for coins there, might be an indicator of improvement in V1.1, or that I just got better. I was using the 13" coil, used the 9" a little bit but didn't notice any real difference.
  19. Thanks Chris, funny I didn't notice all the digging. 🤔 Some places it was constant too, I'd dig one and immediately find another. I wear one knee pad, it helps a lot. Lots of coin spills.
  20. Considering I dug around 300 holes in the place, I hope I'm giving detectorists a good name. They also appreciate me digging all the live ammo there. Didn't find any this time. 😀 RV campgrounds are awesome places, most haven't been detected. That is if you don't mind a lot of modern coins. 🤔
  21. Yes, around 30 of the 84 Zincolns I got were all in the same spot with the 8 keys. Can't imagine what that was about. They were all right next to a tree. About $20 in change total. Best part was the compliments I got from staff that they couldn't find any of the holes I dug 🤣
  22. Just got done laying out all the finds from my week long trip to a campground, it was an old hunting lodge and camp before it changed hands twice to become a full fledged campground. I was going to tumble the coins first but decided to do them and all the others I've found together. I've been here 3 times now, thought I hunted the heck out of the place but find I was wrong. I'm getting better as a detectorist, and now have a better detector, the Deus 2. 🙂 Probably a combination of both. Over the course of a week hunting anywhere from 3 to 6 hours a day, I got all the stuff below: 262 coins, oldest was a 1926 buffalo nickel. 3 rings, one is either gold plated or filled, estimated at 1950-1965. Got it pretty well cleaned up, it looks cast and has some gold solder where it broke once. Old script "V". The pictures don't do it justice, it's really shiny. Got a working hand torch, a cheap but working flashlight, an old duck call, keys, and some stuff used to make a bracelet. One 1930 wheat and a 1978 penny with what I think may be a laser hole in it, it's just too perfect. The only silver I got was the tiny iron cross on the earring. 3 very old buttons were the relics, one from the late 1800s and two much older. Quite a week.
  23. Colonel, thanks for this discussion and testing. I'm following this thread. Was this anomaly present in V.71? 🤔
