rexhavoc
Dropped the detector and the shaft snapped just above the bolt. What are the options? JB Weld? Someone make a new, stronger shaft?
Rick N. MI
Cut a piece of wood or something and put it inside the shaft at the break. Glue it in with epoxy. Then glue the shaft together.
Jeff McClendon
Replacement shafts are around $30 US. 1
rexhavoc
Replacement shafts are north of $52 Trudeau Pesos, not including Gouge Screw Tax, then who knows what for shipping + more GST. Opted for the "JB Weld Plastic" option - weighs in at 80 grams post repair. Not pretty but let's see how it fares:
rexhavoc
Yah, so JB Weld Plastic didn't hold. Certain plastics epoxies just won't dig into - this shaft is made of one. If I was to add an internal collar + epoxy, passing the battery lead thru might prove impossible; not much wasted space there. An external clamp plus epoxy, well that also adds weight. I am mostly concerned that a metal hose clamp or metal filled epoxy would negatively impact the coil field, skewing it skywards instead of downwards. But, both fixes would defeat one of the best features of the XP detectors - they are the lightest available. Guess I'm popping for a new shaft and will treat the next one better.
