I don't think I have ever seen one of those before unless it is a extra large bullet. Please tell me what it is. Maybe a tusk would be my next guess.

A pestle is used for crushing nuts or grain or other coarse organic/mineral constuients to make fine powders or pastes.  You crush the coarse material with the pestle against a concave or bowl shaped stone, ceramic, or wood base called a mortar.

Chase explained it very well.

Here are a couple of examples of basic style mortars with their primary use here in Northern California being too process acorns for mush and bread.

I do have a large shard of a Roman one they added tiny pieces of gravel in the inside while doing them to have a more abrasive surface...............evolution
