Yes IronDigger, but only for an hour or so. I put it head to head with my 18" flat wound Coiltek Elite on some gold targets sitting on ironstone conglomerate ground, (IE, air tests) using my 5000. Similar depth for both coils on an ounce piece, also similar for a half ounce piece. The CC won convincingly, however, on a 3 gram piece. HOWEVER: I ran both coils in "normal" timing. The 18" Elite is generally unusable in that setting on much Australian goldfield ground. The 18" CC, on the other hand , ran happily with no extraneous noise, just like its 32" big brother did for me some weeks ago. I was also able to run it in "Sharp" timing with no problems except occasionally sounding off on some shallow hot rocks. As most GPX users are aware, "Normal" and "Sharp" are, respectively, the deepest usable goldfield timings and any coil able to run them has a considerable depth advantage over all other settings. To say I'm pleased with the coil would be an understatement and now I can't wait to put it to work - - - but that will have to wait :<( Back to farming - - -

Speaking of gold and civil war relics, I found these years ago on and near the "Welcome Stranger" surfacing at Moliagul, Victoria: Silver handle piece off a US "Liberty and Union" folding knife ca 1860's. Gold 7 grams. I've found quite a lot of American artefacts and currency from that era over the years.

Fred and MN: Discrimination is not a feature I have much use for. Because I work on "new" ground I rarely encounter junk at depth. It's too easy to get locked into relying on discrimination. I've lost count of the number of times Jimmy, Reg or myself have dug good gold under an old bolt or such on previously detected ground. Moral of the story, don't rely heavily on discriminators when prospecting. All I can say in relation to the CC coils is that the iron reject function works, as to whether or not it is as good or better than a DD then you'll have to ask someone who cares!

You set the "iron reject" level of your choice on the GPX's for the CC coils, just like you do with a DD. As I said, no discrimination available on the "Kwed".

Fred: I've used the 32" Detech coil and it blanks out iron like a DD on the 5000. This feature isn't available with the QED as it doesn't have discrimination.

Good to hear from you Mitch. It's impossible in this day and age to keep a new gold area quiet for long. The trick is to leave as little as possible, but nobody or nothing gets it all - - - At least Reg and I can legitimately claim to have discovered an entirely new Victorian detectable gold field three years ago - one that not even the "Old Boys" picked up on, despite a few desultory test holes - and has now resulted in many ozs in our kitty, plus an unknown amount to the newcomers, with the final extent of it still to be prospected up.

Update: while gridding out an area this morning, I heard a faint dipping signal in an area which only yielded small flyshite in the past. Hit large rounded quartz gravels a foot down and dug through into red clay: Personal best so far this trip. Sorry about the shitty image. Should read .842 ozt. Currently camped on the job in central Vic where comms are difficult, but here's a progress report. Been at it for a couple of weeks (I think ) but there are some results to report. I've been working solo a lot of the time but also with Reg when he's not too busy. We started off testing the new Detech 32" coplanar concentric which Stinky Pete kindly loaned us for a few days. What a coil! Although we didn't manage to put it over any deep gold, it's easily the deepest seeking coil we have ever used, yet sensitive to small targets as well. I'm ordering an 18" to 20" model as soon as they become available. Howard is busy planning mods to the QED so it can run them as well. I'm pretty excited about these coils. My friend Tony has been winding and using them for years with great prospecting success. Needless to say, he isn't interested in owning a "Z" Hang onto your GPX's folks, they're about to penetrate previously unreached depths! Some of the properties we've been prospecting are familiar and some are new. Always a buzz to finally get onto new ground after meeting with the "Cocky" and negotiating a deal. In some cases the ground has been detected before by others, but with careful gridding we always manage more. On one property we worked yesterday a previously detected patch yielded an additional ounce and a half in chunky colours (young blokes we were told) Perhaps they were ignoring screamers, but we're not complaining First up, my solo tally so far. largest piece (front) over half an oz. All found with QED PL2: - and our shared tally to be eventually split 50/50 . Again, largest piece (front) over half an oz detected by Reg: All gold located in patches on eroded Tertiary leads. Some pieces still have traces of the cement matrix they eroded out from. A general view of one of the Tertiary patches with Reg's young foxy "Boo" photobombing. Condor: You gave it your best shot - and yes, it can be tough out west for anybody, not just Yanks. Good luck with the detector - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Plenty of cheap 19" "Dog" coils on Fleabay and Gummie here in Aus. Might be worth $AU700 to get the chip? Probably not worth putting the plug back on though. Price seems to have dipped since all those faulty x coils hit the market. ?

Bingo! Jasong: After careful consideration I think you just hit the nail squarely on the head. That would neatly explain JP's sometimes bizarre x coil criticism - and reluctance to publish results of his testing. He knows the x coils deliver the goods but would prefer people wait for the legit option - and can't say anything! It would also explain other key players silence on the topic du jour.
