I was going to go into further explanation of what I want the AQ Tone and mute modes to do but I think it would just confuse everyone more. I'm just going to resign to the apparent fact that the Impulse AQ is the best PI ever designed. If at some point the Tone and Mute modes prove to be useful that is just icing on the cake.

Target ID is not the same as VDI (Visual Target Indicator). Target ID is simply the detectors ability to identify a target. I should have said Tone ID which is a form of target ID. Tone ID is the ability to identify a target by a designated tone. Le Jag's video implied the AQ as having Tone ID.

It's all LEJAG's fault for making those videos where the nails gave a low tone and the gold ring gave a high tone. I think that got a lot of peoples attention and made some believe that target ID in a PI might be possible. I just noticed in the recent flyer that there is no mention of the AQ having any form of target ID except for iron which is only going to be in Tone and Mute modes. The question is, how useful are these modes?

Being able to tell ferrous from non-ferrous by tone ID deeper than a VLF would definitely be a magic wand for me, but it's starting to sound like the AQ is not going to have that capability. We won't know for sure until someone actually tests it in tone/mute mode and does a review. I am really liking what we've seen so far with the all metal performance though and will probably still buy one when the improved model eventually comes out just for that extreme depth.

OBN, you should try filling the PVC pipe with seawater. That might more accurately replicate actual wet sand conditions.

I know. It just bothers me a bit that they would let it out the door this way knowing that it would be a problem for a lot of people and come back as complaint in the reviews. It makes it appear that it was rushed into production which I guess it was. Not the best marketing technique to promote the future model.

Note from Steve H - I made a comment on my first use of the Fisher Impulse AQ that the rod was a little too short - FOR ME. That has been picked up on to mean I am saying the rod is too short, and well, how could they? I don't think so, same rod as has been used on 1280-x and CZ-20 etc for like 40 years. I am just very particular in rod length and positioning, and 1/4” off will bug me. The stock rod is an inch too short for my liking is all, but I like a long reach and sweep if I so desire it. I am 5' 11" tall. See my post later on down this thread for measurements with photos, and you can decide for yourself. The main thing is the rod is two piece, and that limits the adjustment. The original Manta rod was three piece, but it was metal and prone to corrosion, so they went to the CZ fiberglass rod instead. This is Badgers original post, moved from another thread: I guess they weren't kidding when they said the connectors were fragile. Too bad the stock shaft is so short. I'm six feet tall and it sounds like the LTD would be way too short for me without that middle rod.

I love the depth it's getting in all metal. I have a few coin/relic sites which have very little iron that I would love to hunt with this machine. Is this a freshwater beach where you are doing the testing? I see no signs of it being tidal.

16.5" is awesome for wet ocean sand in all metal. I wish someone would show us how deep it will go in Tone mode on the wet sand. They claim that Tone mode only loses 10% of its performance compared to All Metal. I would like to see some video to back that up.

Ah, yes I see. The MSRP prices are found on the manufacturers web page. I rarely look at those and forgot they were there. Thanks for clearing that up.

What do you mean by internet price? Aren't all prices advertised on the internet MSRP when a new detector is introduced? .

Got it. I didn't know the dive version might be available so soon. Not that I want the dive version. The only advantage to that for me would be the battery. I am psyched to get the Limited at a much lower price. 👍 Another advantage of getting the Limited is that Fisher is no doubt going to make sure that each of these units are flawlessly assembled, because these are the detectors that will be generating future sales of the mass produced models. .

A tiny scoop like that isn't going to dig deep enough for the Impulse. .

I was wondering the same thing. I would think having the metal target in contact with the wet sand would affect the conductivity. Especially if it were saltwater sand. .

What does it mean "replaced in a few months"?

So, if Disc mode is just for beginners, that must mean that Disc mode won't go any deeper than a VLF. Hopefully that is not the case, but if it is, at least we still have awesome All Metal depth, quiet operation and really nice tones. I will probably be using All Metal most of the time anyway. .

Will there be a way to plug in normal 1/8" or 1/4" headphones, or are we limited to just the type that fit the connector? I'm hoping we have the option to go wireless. .

The surfing often conflicts with my detecting and vice versa. The best time to surf or detect is around low tide and when the waves are big I have to pick one or the other.

That's different, how the cable passes over the center of the coil like that. Is there a reason why they made it that way?

I live near the coast so I do it all. Beach, woods, fields, cellar holes. No particular preference. When the beach is good, I am totally there. I don't do much water hunting but will if I get a good inland site. I mostly stick to NH and southern Maine.
