  1. Thanks! As we all know it's location, I happen to live in one of the oldest parts of the Colonies and it hasn't changed a lot since then. Most of my location is still farmed, so relics are everywhere. I consider all my relic finds to be luck, not so much skill 😅 I do have to moderate my hunting, my wife actually likes having me around. To be able to say "I'll be right out front" is kind of a bonus 🤣
  2. Thanks VL, There isn't a lot of room in my kitchen so I got my wife all set up to do our Christmas Eve dinner, and asked if she minded if I went out front for a bit. I'm glad I did. A great feast was ready for me when I got back, we had a great day.
  3. Thanks, the Spanish silver I've found on the other side of this field is older, but this find is spectacular because it's an early US historical find. I am hoping to find more of that on this side but there wasn't as much activity.
  4. You are right Joe, the area just past this one is extremely trashy, and when I initially hunted this field I stopped at the edge where the signals weren't as abundant. After gaining lots more experience I have learned to look for "plow drags" outside of such a spot and have been greatly rewarded but it takes more persistence. You know darn well I'll be out there 😅
  5. Thanks Doc, They minted ~675,000 coins for the Colonies in 1773 at the Royal Mint in the tower of London. It wasn't until 1775 that these were released to the Colonies, and soon after the Revolution began in Lexington/Concord MA. There are some fakes out there but judging from the context this one is real. When I first started almost 3 years ago I was out there almost every day, but have recently slowed down to 2-3 times a week weather permitting. Moderation has set in 😏
  6. I wish I could get all "engineer-y" about it, but that's for someone else. 😀 I log a lot of hours of "feel". I simply notice a lot more high tones thrown in the mix when swinging over a well forged iron target like a really old nail. For some reason the 11x13 doesn't do it as much, and I prefer it to the 11" because of that. The only reasons I've been using the 11" lately is because of my shoulder injury and the fact that I want to get as much coverage per swing as I can in those nasty corn fields. As Geologyhound writes above, I also err on the side of digging if I get better than 50% decent tones. With the 11" I get a lot more iron. An advantage of the 11" and 9" coils (I have all 3) is that digging is successively easier the smaller you get, the target tends to be more on center. That's the best I can do 🤷‍♂️ Here, depth is only an issue in rare cases, if a coin makes it past the clay under the loam it's gone, it's all sand at that point, The 11x13 has scored me a couple of really deep finds, but it's more useful on the beach than anywhere.
  7. Great pic, thanks. Tungsten Carbide is also slightly magnetic but it's very resistant to scratching. It's a custom ring, still really nice. Here ya go, found it: https://www.ccforlife.com/LifeMates_with_Channels_8_5MM_Band_p/3ccmate85wr.htm They call it "Jewelers Stainless", not an especially cheap ring. 🙂 I think I'd get a new bottle of Jagermeister to celebrate 😀
  8. Wow NC! Nice ring! 👍 I see "C C PLA" inside, Platinum? Can you get better pics of the marks inside? Regardless that's a great ring. Good to see ya out there gettin' 👍
  9. Nice find Ghound! So how are you liking the 11x13"? Yeah it's a bit heavy and floppy, but I like it a lot more than the 11" which falses on iron more. Not so bad that you can't tell by turning but ellipticals seem to do better for me. 🤔
  10. Here's my two year old Predator Ranger shovel, just cleaned up after a hunt: Take care of your stuff, and your stuff will take care of you 😎
  11. Yeah, I thought I'd be done hunting for the year with the upcoming holidays, but not only was it warm and not windy today and my wife didn't have anything for me to do, but I woke up with a strong feeling I should get out there. Always trust those feelings and act on them if you can. The farm in front of my house is pretty big, I've only hunted about a third of it. This year it's covered with corn debris and some stalks even though they turbo tilled it. I've found some great stuff out there in the past, cut pistareens, some Spanish half Reale coins, even an 1805 half cent. Lots of buttons! It's the first place I got permission to outside my yard. It really cemented the belief that this hobby is for me. The day started out foggy and a bit cold, I didn't get out until about 10:30, helped my wife with a bunch of stuff and then headed out there. I had the D2 with the 11" coil, this is about as far away from my house that I walked. Got a big 89/90 and dug this cool old baseball medal: It's stamped, might be silver or silver plated. Totally unexpected find. I'm thinking it's pretty old, but can't find it. Next thing that came up was a solid 90: At first I thought it was a large cent but it turned out to be a complimentary Statue of Liberty medallion from a store in New York City. So it's that old anyway. 🤔 Hacked around, got some buttons and then a really solid 85, I lost it when this came up: At first I thought it was Spanish, a copper? Well I sent this pic and the other side to my buddy, and he shortly thereafter came back with this: It's a 1773 Virginia Half Penny!! Wow. My first state coin, and a rare one at that. Only minted one year, and there are two versions but I don't dare touch it to find out which one it is. Here's the haul today: Got the medal, the medallion, half of a trapezoidal spectacle buckle I found near the coin along with the larger of the two buttons. An old overall button, and a wagon wheel looking button which I think is the second one found here. The last item may be a rivet or an old paper collar stud. Even the trash was kinda cool, bullets and even a Model T pressure valve. 😀 I dug the large iron buckle near the coin, just trying to grab context. Here are better views of the coin: I dug it this far from my house, it was only about 4-5" deep. Not bad for 3.5 hours! Merry Christmas!
  12. Wow NC, the 7 is an older model, I think they're up to 12 now. 🤔 Did it have any saved video on it? 😀 That's really a testament to how good those cameras are. Cool find!
  13. Aluminum is one of Earth's most common metals, it had to come from somewhere 🤔 ... Imagine the size of the pull tabs that would be found in some of the craters. 😀
  14. Thanks! I'm thinking fancy drawer pull too, but often wonder why I find them at all In a field. 🤔 I suppose it could be a saddle stud of some sort but without what was at the other end of the iron bolt inside I guess that will be a mystery. I pretty much know now if I get a high signal and have dug 10" or more I'll be finding a crushed beer can, but once I thought so and got a Walking Liberty Half dollar, and another time it was a cavalry Bit boss with US on it. 😵 I'll try the Peroxide first, that's a great suggestion. 👍
  15. Gave my wife a couple gold rings and some silver earrings this year, hell she's buying me WSA II XL headphones. 😎 We've already booked next year's beach trips.
  16. I've not noticed a depth difference between pitch and pulse, but I use pitch exclusively. I do know that people miss out big time when not connecting the MI-6 to the Deus 2 RC and headphones, the RC really adds extra reach. Again I'm not sure if you can crank it that high using the button. I always run the MI-6 at 50 sensitivity, I don't find the tones annoying. Maybe that accounts for your observations? From what I've seen, "Research mode" is a function of the Deus 1 (which I don't have) to locate your pinpointer should you lose it. Guess the lanyard they ship the MI-6 with is probably a better idea. 🤔
  17. Nice stuff Gopher! 👍 Guess there's lots of other hunting I don't do, I'm impressed. Didn't know about the blue dimes either.
  18. Great finds LMPD, 😀 I often wonder what I'm missing out there when I pass on a big iron target, but the ax head Chase showed me yesterday that I can do without carrying an ax head on a long hunt. I'm sure lots of iron fans will disagree 😅 I apologize in advance. 😬 Beautiful seated, it kills me to see the condition West Coast finds are often in. 😏 That's one heck of a dime! Here they're extremely worn or black or both.
  19. Thanks Ghound, I can't make out anything, but indeed it is 19.02mm. And it's so worn it's 2.6g: Guess at this point it's so shot I could steel wool the snot out of it to see if I get anything. 😏 Yeah, I find so many of those D's I probably tossed it. Had a musket ball too, think I lost it when I took a break but I have a ton of them as well.
  20. Thanks VL, I'll take a silver finish any day! 😅 Merry Christmas to you and yours, hope you were good enough to stay on the nice list. 😬 🎄🎅
  21. And when they do, sometimes pull tabs and aluminum are falling at 70,000 mph, and bury themselves deeper than the good finds. 🤣 That's what we saw in this field, the buttons were 4-6", and the aluminum was 6-10". 😠 It was pretty strange. 🤔
  22. Invited Chase down to hunt a new permission today, a somewhat remote farm that had a house and a couple of barns on it, the farmer said the house was "very old", but it's gone now. It's not a large farm, might have been primarily subsistence, but we managed to get a few objects, again a 5-hour 5 mile walk, including the half mile we had to go to get to it. The road to it is still muddy after the rain we got last weekend, so it was risky to drive out there. We pretty much scoured the entire place, found a few things here and there, where the house was is machine gun iron and sticky clay under the topsoil. Kind of tough to dig. Here's the trash, lots of copper wire and lead and pull tabs that seemed like they were deeper than the good stuff. 🤔 We were both ironically rewarded with a silver coin each near the end, I got a fairly nice 1945 Mercury dime. Can't identify the penny-sized object at all, its thickness suggests it's an IHP. Probably won't get out again until after Christmas and New Year's. Really it's best to wait until hunting season ends anyway. 😀
  23. I think it's just Military Discipline, I have shovels that I've used for over 25 years that still look new. 😀 While I did just put all that together, I brush it all off and blow all the dirt out after every hunt. 😎 I rinse everything off, and spray my shovel with WD-40.
  24. Great couple of hunts. That SLQ is awesome! That must be pretty interesting to do those archaeological hunts, sad you have to turn everything over but that is a great Marine button. 👍 Nice way to wrap up 2023! 🏆
