  1. Great hunt! I can't imagine digging holes that deep but apparently that's where the good stuff is. πŸ€” Grateful you show what it takes to get it. Also swinging that huge coil... Wow. πŸ†
  2. Got up Saturday morning, and found I didn't have a heck of a lot to do. πŸ€” I decided to go detecting because it was going to be a nice day and there was a big storm coming, it's here now. We're going to get 3-5" of rain again. 😡 I went to a new permission I call the "Penny Farm" because the last time I was there I got a lot of wheats and one IHP. Got there late and was followed in by a truck full of hunters, they kept going out into the back field where I heard dogs all over the place. It was only slightly risky but I knew I'd be detecting in lower elevations so I should be ok. It might be kind of hard to tell but my truck, barely visible in the photo was about 60 feet above where I took this. The hunters got their deer and left about an hour later. I turned on OnX Hunt tracking and hunted the turn zones of part of this farm for about 5 hours, ended up walking about 5 miles. This place has been heavily cherry picked but the Deus 2 can easily find items on edge and pull stuff out of dense trash pretty well. I was using a modified General program due to how much moisture was in the soil, it was ground balancing at about 75 instead of the usual 82 or so. A good portion of this farm is also sticky red clay. It's not hard to dig when wet but it's heavy. I relied on my theory that most detectorists that cherry pick have their "eyes on the prize", that the house site was hit hard but the field "turn zones" might have some interesting relics and coins. I wasn't disappointed, the first find was this: A very old large button, domed with the shank still on it. I found one of these recently in another field but the shank was missing. Not too much later in the same area where the farmer would be turning the livestock produced this: My second 1864 2 cent piece in a month! The last one was the first I'd ever found in almost 4 years of farm hunting. It made my day. After hunting the turn area and crossing the field for the next 4 hours I didn't get much, I found one very trashy area and to my chagrin discovered a spot used for rifle target practice, it was loaded with bullets. I did go over the house site again and got a 1930 wheat and a couple of clad coins dropped much later after the house was gone. Trash was more than a handful but I felt it was a successful day all things considered.
  3. Yep and this answers why, I had mine set up for "push" because of all the extraneous IDs you get using auto. 🀬 It wouldn't sync up so I blew it off and used OnX Hunt. 🀣 I did know about the sync while detecting a signal. Thanks Cap! πŸ‘
  4. This happened to me once. 🀬
  5. There are a lot of considerations because the Deus 2 is so versatile. Welcome to the dark side πŸ€ͺ First, you must make sure your WS6 and remote are both on the same version. It's hard to tell because the WS6 was updated again after V2, do them both on the same session. I'll tell you V2 is far better than any iteration of V1. Second, the WS6 has different pairing options, as a Master or a slave. You should investigate this. Third, there are volumes for each device you pair except coils. Look there to ensure everything is right, all should be 0 except the current device you are using. Volume for devices not used eats battery. If the coil is always pairing to the RC, I would not suspect the RC antenna. A very helpful thing would be to invest in the WSA II or WSA II XL headphones and keep the WS6 as a second detector, you must unpair it from the RC if you do that. HTH, HH
  6. Did some digging for ya, and the only reeded steel coin I can find is the 20 Centesimi coin from Italy. It's a little bigger than a penny, 22mm.
  7. I agree with the Cap'n, it's 007. πŸ˜€ That's not a Walther PPK, but it rules out Serling. 🀣 Interesting find! πŸ‘
  8. Great find Daniel, and also feel ya on the pet. Still not over a few of mine, got a new buddy tho. πŸ™‚ For me and my wife especially, he keeps her company while I'm out detecting. I am glad she agreed to find another. A smooth half Reale is better than no Reale, a lucky and fascinating find. They should be everywhere, Spanish silver was used as currency in the USA until around the 1850s. πŸ‘ and no doubt thereafter!
  9. Fascinating hunt Cap! πŸ‘ Your "Miller" plate is this: The array of overall buttons and tokens are incredible. πŸ™‚ Patented 4 hole? Wow. The Sterling band, depending on it's size might be from a pipe stem, they often carry marks like that. Cool iron, and I hope the spherical object with grooves isn't alien bone... πŸ€” πŸ‘½
  10. I find the second day after a rain to be best, especially if it is a lot. We got nearly 5" of rain yesterday, so I'm probably going to wait until Wednesday this week. My yard is still soupy but it also was farmland. πŸ‘ Thanks for the good wishes! πŸ™‚
  11. Ya best get out there, you'll be off the naughty list by next Christmas if you slay some roots a little early. 😏 And return some jewelry 🀣
  12. Last year I got a Dune Titanium 6" from Serious Detecting and a CF handle from Steve, when the beach isn't rocky or pebbly (ex. white sand) I use that one. The whole thing weighs less than 3 pounds! It was expensive but man I hardly know I'm carrying it compared to the ~5 pound CooB. However, 1.5mm titanium is nowhere near as tough as 2mm stainless, so the 9" CooB Shark V10 gets used everywhere else. πŸ˜€ Steve's CF scoop handles (though I wish I could get a longer one) are par excellence. πŸ‘
  13. We ended up getting 4.5" of rain, and snow in the morning. That was one nasty nor'easter. 😡 It was only a dusting that will be gone by lunchtime, but it's nice to see some snow, we usually don't get much. I'm hoping to get back to those spots later in the week, it may hit 50 a couple of days this week, but I have to wait for the high winds to start drying the surface, this place is like a sponge. The day after the day after a rain is usually dry enough to not get totally stuck in the mud. You should have found a few IHPs, your area is certainly old enough for them. πŸ€” On the Deus they come in lower than copper memorials, but I will usually dig anything around those numbers. πŸ™‚ The detectorists I know of here are silver snatchers, they don't even bother with copper.
  14. Thanks VL, I have more possible places in my pocket but don't feel I've done these full justice. πŸ™‚ Hope you get to that beach and find some great stuff and make some people happy. Glad you're back for a while also. That's some dangerous stuff you do. πŸ‘
  15. Thanks kac, We thought it was some kind of lamp base, really thick brass. House was built ~1670s, and moved in the 1800s. We found some of the foundation bricks in the woods.
  16. Thanks Colonel, I like the long walks on nice days. Gotta keep doing it to keep my health. Sometimes if I've stopped for a few days I get wicked leg cramps, but two capfuls of cider vinegar in 4oz of water stops them in seconds. πŸ˜€ I bring lots of water and take magnesium too. Second day was only about 4 miles. It's all shuffling and swinging the detector.
  17. Thanks, I love the really old stuff too, even if it's bits. πŸ˜€ I did find that one small brass button so there's hope, going back to hit the turn zones, and look at the field below the house where I got the button. Had to make sure the guy at the bottom of the hill knew who I was and doesn't release his dogs on me πŸ˜… The place I got the spectacle buckle also deserves another look, it'll be later next week after 5 inches of rain soaks in. Supposed to get high winds when the front comes through, that will start the surface drying anyway. πŸ€” Going from the 60s to the 40s. 😡
  18. If you're used to the 800, buying and bringing a new detector might not be a good idea, considering the leaning curve between the 800 and 900. Better and cheaper to accessorize your 800 unless you have time to learn a new machine. The scoops the Cap'n suggested are just fine, you might want the smaller one unless you are ok with scooping a lot at one time. πŸ‘
  19. Thanks, I was hoping for better but I take what I get. πŸ˜€ It's sad that these places have been hit so hard, there's no one stopping anyone from looking, but in that case you have to scout until you find a hotspot that was missed. In a small subsistence farm there aren't many hotspots. Evidence of horses is much better. I imagine I'll find random objects here and there and some may be surprising. That's what the 13" excels at. It's a lot of walking and quiet, then you get shocked. 😁 I was surprised to find the old brass button at the second place, and the IHP tells me there is potential for older finds. I'll have to hit the house site with a dig it all frame of mind and the 9". Nothing is going to be too deep. This was just a scouting run, next I'll apply Farm Hunting 101. 🀣
  20. Stuck inside today because of the massive low that tore up Tennessee yesterday, I feel for ya, hope everyone on the forum in TN got through it ok. We're supposed to get a lot of rain, and high winds 😡 Got out twice this week, once with Chase and once by myself, got 3 new fields to check after talking to one of the farmers. He asked us to find a piece of survey rebar for him that his kids whacked the marker stake for. Once we figured out where it was Chase found it within 5 minutes. We hunted an area we found some pretty good stuff a while ago, Chase did a little better than me, but it was a fairly decent day and I got to talk to the owner of that place who confirmed the spot we were hunting was the right one. That was a long hunt, I recorded about 6 miles of walking. The next day I went to one of the new places to scout it, old topos and aerials showed a farmhouse that was long gone. It was a big hill, a beautiful place, and it was going to be warm. I only hunted this farm for about 4 hours, mostly the farmhouse area. There was a lot of trash, and after my first wheat penny find I got 5 more and one memorial. On the side of the rise for the house I managed to get an IHP, a couple of clad quarters in the driveway, a thimble, a dog tag from the 80s and one very old small brass button. I walked the road to the huge field out back and got absolutely nothing. πŸ˜€ I did dig a bullet shell or two but that's it. Ended up leaving early, I'll probably go back for a more determined search with the 9" at the farmhouse, the 13" was probably not the best choice for such a trashy spot but it did pull some small stuff. For the long haul I was glad I chose it. Here's everything I got over the two hunts. On top are the things I got at the farmhouse, the middle are the first day, and the bottom the coins. The oldest is the IHP that I think is 1888 but I'm not positive, sidelighting and other tricks haven't helped. It's very thin and domed for some reason. I love finding spectacle buckles, got that the first day walking around looking for the rebar. I'll have to go back to that spot. The large brass circle looks like a boss of some sort, it's curled on the back and if it was covering something. Buckle bits and a broken Tombac put most of those finds in the 1600s. The thimble is an advertisement for Bonnie Laddie Shoes from the 40s, here is a much cleaner one: Looks like 40's and 50's, the research varies. πŸ˜€ It was fun having something to look up tho. Trash the first day wasn't big, but I did get some interesting large bits of heavy brass: Second day was stuff you would expect from a house site, one of the buildings had burned so there was molten metal. Just about everything was in the 80s or 90s on the Deus: I talked to the gentleman at the bottom of the hill in the photo, he said he has a cheap metal detector and that the place has been hunted before. 🫀 I knew that, but it was nice to have it confirmed. I'll have to dig a lot of junk there to get myself some cherries... πŸ€”
  21. I'll add an anecdote: I was out hunting today and got a 93 in a gravel driveway at a long gone farmhouse. First I used the MI-6 at sensitivity 50, and heard a clear mid tone as I moved it over the target. I happened to have my Accupoint with me, so I turned it on, verified its sensitivity at 9, and moved it over the target. Nothing. I found the exact spot with the MI-6, and placed the tip of the Accupoint in the same spot. Still nothing. The hole I dug the 1973 quarter in was no more than 6cm deep. The quarter was probably at about 4cm. That's about 2.5 inches on a quarter! I was kinda disappointed. πŸ€” We all like our investments to be sound, I get it, but I don't think the video covered a real situation, and we don't know the variables. In the video we have no idea what setting the MI-6 was on. I can tell you plainly the Accupoint does not even come close to the MI-6, and its sensitivity to iron is iffy at best until it is in the right position to the object. I'm also kinda not a fan of the procedure to turn the Accupoint off, I guess I'll learn it over time, but I prefer a full press and hold like almost all the others. I'll probably be bringing the Quest with me more when relic hunting, but usually I don't need disc to determine if the target is iron.
  22. Good to see some really cool finds Doc! πŸ‘ I'm a fan of hunting and combat knives, which I think the topmost one might be (Ek?). I think kac is right about the seated, no date? Also surprised at the razor's condition. I often wonder how many knives I miss because I don't dig much iron. πŸ€” The addition of brass and nickel will give clues, and when I get the "Fruit Salad" of tones I dig. It's not for lack of trying but I did get 3 new places to hunt yesterday, so maybe I can shake things up a bit before the holidays 😁 been busy earning Detecting Pointsβ„’ at home. 🀣
  23. Hi Square partly because I previously used the Equinox, and I now find that most aluminum will make a certain tone especially on a beach which helps dig a little less crap. For some reason it's not as good in soil now that I'm back to relic hunting. I've not noticed a heck of a lot of false signals that don't go mostly iron on a turn. From digging lots of iron previously I find I can trust the detector. I mitigate falsing mostly with sensitivity, audio response and bottle caps. It's always good to doubt yourself now and again however πŸ€”
  24. Meh, I'm going to stick with Gary. I think XP could have chosen a much less flamboyant individual as America's representative. I appreciate Gary's low key, no frills videos and plain straightforward instruction. But then again I don't really need anyone to follow. πŸ€” At one time that was the point in this country. πŸ€ͺ
  25. Nice hunt Ghound! Yeah the 13" can be a bear with tilting, but nailing small coins on the beach at 8-12" is a thrill for me. Little 89-90 blip and I know I'm on a dime. Dug so many this past summer! It's also great you noticed the value of the coil in overgrowth. Your watch face is part of a pocket watch that looked like this: Probably radium paint. πŸ™‚ Beautiful Barber dime, that really is the star of the show. Judging from the concertina reed, knife pommel cover and the watch parts it seems more like that school was on a commercial site long ago. It's all similar to what I found at an old steamboat landing. πŸ€” Definitely a site worth returning to as long as it's not loaded with poison ivy as well πŸ˜€
