I probably should have asked this question before I ordered the pin pointer. 🤔 Anyway, I was reading the other thread about using a pin pointer at the beach, and it got me interested in giving it a try. I have tried the Garrett carrot with no success. I got two lemons that would either not turn on at all or would just vibrate away as soon as I turn them on. Returned both after new batteries did not fix the problem. So I thought about the Fisher F Pulse and then started checking prices for others. I saw that the Pro-Find 35 was $99 as opposed to the Pro-Find 40 which is $150. I saw the only difference seemed to be the 40 had a 10% increase in depth. The F-Pulse is $120. Wound up just hitting the "Buy Now" button on the Pro-Find 35. Did I screw up? Anybody have problems with this unit? Thanks......

Thanks for the great write up on your hunts! Those type spots are what makes our hobby fun. And by the way....you da man for finding a great spot that hasn't already been pillaged. They are getting scarce these days. 👍

I guess they could if you got the right fitting foam nub, but I believe by "waterproof" they just mean you can get them wet and they will keep working. I have been slapped upside the head by waves with no problems from them, and I leave them plugged into my detector when I spray it down with the hose. I spray the buds down too with no issues.

That's what I use. I bought the long cord version of these ear buds: Link I don't see the long cord version listed any more. Same seller, maybe contact them to see if they still make the long cord type if you're interested.

Or if you really want to go cheap, KOB has a fiberglass broom handle from Home Depot that has held up. Don't know the exact model, maybe he will jump in and link to it. OOPS! Wrong forum for KOB. Good to know. I didn't realize that the phones had software. I don't use mine anymore because I prefer the earbuds I found. I wonder if the phones update is related to when you update the detector. I never updated my detector, so I wonder. I better go charge my phones now that I'm thinking about it since I haven't used them in so long.

That's why I hate that one of my busy beaches is just loaded with can slaw IDing below 10. I pretty much disregard below 10 there because there is a piece of aluminum every 3rd swing or so. Sometimes one will really sound good in Prospecting Audio so I dig it and it's always ROUND %$!# ALUMINUM!

I'm with you guys.....if you can't see it, it ain't what I'm looking for. You can spend 10-15 minutes trying to find a small piece of crap if you don't have a pin pointer. I don't carry one because I figure if it's that small, I don't want it anyway.

I dig them at the beach as long as I don't get an iron grunt in any direction. If it's a faint repeatable with no iron, I dig. But my digging at the beach is much easier than your digging at the park! Last week I got a very faint repeatable in the dry sand and it turned out to be a small St. Christopher pendant 18" to 20" down.

I see a Manticore in your future. When I saw the pic in the first post I said "that looks like 18k!" Nice deep gold color. Congrats.

Very nice. I bought my GF a hollow link 18k bracelet back in 2001. She still wears it every time she leaves the house now days. It shows signs of wear, but has held up so far. Nice find!

I'll post what the manual says about the info that can be gleaned from the 2D trace so you guys can interpret it your own way: "Factors that affect the shape and position of the Target Trace include metallic composition, complexity, orientation and depth as well as swing rate and Frequency setting. The opacity of the Target Trace is dependant on target strength. Strong signals generate a darker trace (are more opaque) whereas weaker signals generate a lighter trace (are more transparent)." So as I see it, a larger item won't give a larger smudge/dot, but maybe a DARKER spot if it's not real deep. If it's deep, a weaker signal will show as a LIGHTER, grayish display. If a tiny piece of can slaw is just 1" down, it too will give a darker spot on the display because it is a strong signal also. So we are screwed due to Manticore's ability to hit strong on small stuff! It's all about signal strength and the metal's conductivity properties when it comes to the 2D trace.

If it is, it's not much less. I'm still losing targets through my scoop holes in the water. Dug some really small stuff in the sand also. Pop rivet heads from beach chairs, split shot sinkers, tiny can slaw, etc. All the likely suspects are still hitting with the M15.

As Okara said, with Prospecting Audio there are subtle but telling differences in target sounds. First off, if you don't want to dig iron, make sure your Ferrous Volume and Ferrous Pitch are set to your liking and are loud enough to be audible. I have my ferrous volume at about half of what my regular volume is. That grunt sound in addition to the red indication on your screen should eliminate digging iron if you so choose. Aluminum is tough. Learn the short hit sound of foil or tiny can slaw in the 12 and under range. It is different than a gold ring hit sound in the same range. Some may debate this, but I can tell the difference quite noticeably. There is a beach in my area just loaded with tiny can slaw everywhere. It is as if they replenished sand there with recycled aluminum mixed in on purpose almost. I have learned to pass on hits under 12 or so that don't have that "ring" sound after many hours of hunting this beach. You would wear out in 2 hours digging all the aluminum hits there. A ring will have almost a double "ding-ding" sound for lack of a better description. Junk aluminum that IS NOT ROUND will just have a wispy, short hit sound usually under a 12 ID. Round aluminum and pull tabs sound like a ring, nothing you can do about that....just dig it and see. If pull tabs are every 2 or three feet everywhere, don't dig 29-31 ID's even though they sound great. I still haven't dug a ring between 29-31, but I know some may have. It's always been a pull tab for me. Lastly, you say you're trying to use sound, not #'s. Not sure if you mean not looking at all at the ID #? I don't know why in the world you would not want to use the #s to check a target hit. I don't use the #'s either until I get a hit sound. Then.....use them. Time with Tom's settings will be your friend. I've used his settings with Prospecting Audio from day one 15 months ago and have no desire to use bin-tone type settings.

Give Prospecting Audio a good try for a couple hours. I tried it 15 months ago when I bought the machine and just left it there ever since. Learn how foil sounds vs. a good hit sound. Not much you can do about round shaped foil, round can slaw, or pull tabs...they sound like good targets.

The only time I crank it up beyond 21 in the dry sand is when I think it may help me identify a deep weak signal. I just don't like a bunch of continuous chatter. I run 21 in the sand....beach low conductors and 19 in the water.... surf and seawater mode. There's some chatter, but not too bad. I think if you run it too hot, the chatter could possibly mask some target sounds. Also, a lot of people say higher sens make's ID #'s less reliable/jumpy.

Yes....that's the Dankowski settings we discussed on the 3rd page of this thread a couple posts ago.

Thanks Ray, but I am strictly a beach hunter. Aluminum is my problem metal! Dirt diggers will appreciate you sharing these settings to try.

Yep...upper 4, lower 0, recovery 4, all metal, prospecting audio. (for a clean salt beach)

There is no way I could watch the whole 1/2 hour of that! I could have given those settings in 4-5 minutes. Ha! Thanks for finding it. 👍 I'm sticking with Dankowski's.
