Hello, First time poster here, but have been reading a lot the past few weeks to learn and decide if the equinox would be a good upgrade for me. I decided it would be and gained permission from the boss (that would be my wife) to get a nox 600. Since the nox is waterproof, I thought I might like to try doing some detecting in freshwater locations. The manual states that the headphone jack is waterproof, so why would I need a waterproof headphone connection? What would happen if I used a cheap pair of headphones to see if water detecting is something I like to do?

I hit a beach with the Equinox 800 to see if last week's hunt was a fluke. This is a beach that has produced a lot of silver with the GPX but no gold. So it was up to the Equinox to help me get some gold. I used the GPX for half the day and ended up with 7 silver coins and 2 silver rings and a lot of copper pennies. The Equinox produced a silver dime and quarter, but also gave me not one, but three pieces of gold! I really must admit, this machine finds that tiny gold. Unbelievable MINELAB!!! Thank You!!!

I finally had a chance to hit the beach with the Equinox 800. My first hunt was at a cellar hole. It did fairly well considering I did not study up on it. This past week was it's maiden voyage at a beach. I was a little more up to speed at programming it. The machine exceeded what I thought I would get on this hunt. The is a moderate to heavy EMI location with not a lot of shoreline to escape away from it. It handled the EMI a little bit better than the CTX or the GPX. My very first target was a junk earring stud. Nice, sort of micro jewelry. A little while later a part of a silver chain. Hmmm. Then another tiny chain and heart. Hmmm again. Next a silver chain and small ID bracelet. OK what gives? Three chains from a beach I hit a lot and I never found one chain. But the Equinox had more surprises in store. 2 Buffalo nickels right in a row, and then a thin gold heart. Probably attached to something bigger originally. And at last call, it gave me a beautiful .583 gold earring w/ice. Probably fake ice, but ice just the same Next week I'm splitting the day with the GPX and Equinox at a beach I have found close to 70 silvers in a relatively small area of about 120 x 20 foot section. All around 14" deep. I will cleanse it again with the GPX and then see what small things I missed. I am anxiously awaiting beach day !!

Sure isn't much to talk about and far from my biggest gold but yet it is noteworthy....... my smallest gold saltwater find to date, .32 grams hoop earring that was open. Took two scoops to get it out yet I can't say how deep it was, I could have just missed it with the first scoop but the size and the fact it was open tells me that this machine can hunt! I've now found 4 golds in the past 6 hunts none over 2.5 grams for a total weight of 5.26 grams. Yeah, some real small stuff...... Guess I now have a real good test piece for new machines! Settings: Beach 2, Noise canceled, GB on wet in Auto and then raised it 5, tracking on, FE Bias 3, Response Speed 5, sensitivity turned down until stable, 5 tones factory set, running all metal. Lots of aluminum, pull tabs and a few bottle caps that fooled me.... Still lots to learn with the 800. Cliff

Home in the Melbourne, FL area for a couple of weeks, and the weather looks nice, so going to try some beach hunting this week when I can get out for a few hours. While some here will be hitting Cocoa and Melbourne, I'm going to "get my feet wet" south of Indiatlantic on some quieter beaches where I can really drill down on the settings, and without crowds on the beach. Results will be posted as I learn.... (Back to Eglin Air Force Base on the 22nd to attack another closed 40's to 50's housing area that is producing lots of wheaties, and therefore probably a lot of silver awaiting recovery.

I seen Nuke asked about beach hunting in the iron bias thread. Ive got about 100 hours on it now beach playing ..... i say playing because i just got a pair of phones done on the 1st. So..... now im hunting ... about 28 hours serious and about paid for the detector in the last 4 days. You gotta want to hunt with this machine because she likes minerals and concentrations of aluminum. So .... few things ive done to quiet it down. One is ..... you can move the Iron bias from 0 finding a decent number without going over board..... and 6 default is to much for my beach, it seems 2 works well. Also.... recovery speed.. the lower you go the longer those tones are stretched out making it sound like you are hunting right next to an electric fence lol.... moving it to 5 worked for me. Let me throw something else in here ...... GB. My beach was reading auto GB 12 in beach 1 in the wet sand.... but do another GB in beach 2.... you will get 4. ADD 5 digits to you beach 2 GB will get you about the same sensitivity as beach 1, yet is a little quieter. Anyone ever hunt with an Xcal with sensitivity set at just above 8 in disc..... thats what this machine can sound like...... and those digits jumping that Brandon showed on his video is what you may get..... until you hit a target. If you run all the defaults......and in beach 2 shes pretty quiet...... but you aint getting the best out of it. I also was using AM and reduced the target volume to 2 for iron....... throwing those tones in for me broke up the constant low tones the machine was giving. Cant wait to see what others think about the machine IN the water and the suggestions/tricks they used for depth, sensitivity and chatter.

I go to a local beach this afternoon and I head straight away for my normal pattern which is the waterline. This is what I am familiar with as it is new territory on a receding tide. That was the plan and I stuck with it in one direction of about 2 miles. At the end of that walk I had about 3 cents! Nothing, nada at the top or bottom of the beach slope. I'm using beach 1 just about default. Time to switch the pattern. Too many people on the blanket line so it is time to split the difference between blanket and parking lot. Finally a few targets. Coins here and there and I just plod along in the soft sand which I dislike. The wind is picking up and I'm about half way back to my starting spot and I see another detectorist out in front of some houses. He could be on the wet also but today is a day to stay dry. A few hundred yards further I come about a culvert which is directing the wind. One side the sand is holding and the other it is blowing away. That is when I saw my first crumb. I was swinging and had gotten a couple of coins and then I looked down and saw a dime and 2 pennies with all the sand blown away from them! Wow ... no one has been here recently. I continue on in field 1 in this little area and I hear another target (18-19). I can see the edge of a coin, no ... I know what that is because I've found them before in the surf. It is a bus token. I reach down and pick it up without using a scoop. This one is in excellent shape. Now it is time to grid the 20x40 ft area. In less than 3 minutes I get a 9 and I look at my coil and I see the edge of a ring. I see the portion of the cross. I wish now that I had a camera to take a picture as I first saw it. I don't so I quickly grab it. It's 4.5g and feels good. I finish gridding the area and work another trashy area nearby. I pull out a few coins from the muck and I'm on my way back. These coins, token and ring could have been found with ANY detector but I was swinging an 800. It 'challenged' me to find that trashy spot and use it and instead I went near and found a spot I might not have gone to with my CTX. Coincidence? Luck? I found some clues and acted upon them. Little pick-me-up to all fellow Noxaholics..... This beauty was hiding right underneath a lead sinker. (7oz Fishing weight) Got a 22/23 with additional 12/13 reading...dug out the lead sinker and re-scanned.. 12/13 ....reading, then BAM! Thank you Ma'am!! Needless to say, am SUPER STOKED!

Today was a nice day at the beach. It was actually too warm for my long sleeve shirt. I started out at a very low tide and found next to nothing. It was time to get up off the wet sand and go hunt behind the lifeguard stations, away from the non-producing wet sand. What a relief. No salt water, no hot rocks ... just a few bottle caps! I could use beach, park and field as I wanted. I was on the dry sand for about 2 hours which is the most for me in a few years. I think I'll do it again in the right area. The pin is a Dade County Police Chiefs Association lapel pin. I'm in California. I don't know how it got here. Some research that I did indicates that that sociation has renamed itself the Miami-Dade association which would make this pin older. I don't know what year but interesting to me. The big coin is a 1998 Two Pounder. Mitchel

Ok.... This may sound weird to some, but whenever I used to use my old scoop in the sand and surf, I end up trying to balance my detector up against my hip or in front of me so I have both hands free to lift or hold the handle as to look around in the scoop basket. Is there any type of leash that would go around my waist and hook to the arm piece of my detector so I could just let it hang free without it slipping off of me and falling into the drink? I have a new long handle scoop coming in the mail so I thought I would ask.

Since i started using my Equinox i had found it to be a bit weak and couldn't get it to work right for the first couple of trips . But i have got the beach 1 mode sorted now and even though it could do with a single frequency option say 10 khts i have got to understand it better . And feel it is definitely the X.Terra replacement i was looking for or at least mostly . This morning i took the Nox to the beach at 5am hoping for something nice , all the trips out so far have yielded Silver and so i must have been doing something right . I have had 4 Silver rings in the last 2 trips along with a Silver Pendent , a Silver Bangle and a Silver Bracelet and around £65 in coinage . But today i was hoping for 1st prize and thats what happened . I started at 5am in the dark and stayed out till around 10.30am after walking 2 miles on the sand and shingle trying to find anything about , i did find the odd scattering of coinage as usual and some where around 6 to 8 inches in depth . Nothing deeper except large Aluminium "Aluminum" LOL . At around 7.30am i came across a target that was 14 TID and thought 10p or 50p which would have been fine and as i used my 3 pronged fork to dig out the target i saw what i thought was a junk dress ring , but in fact was a nice 3.3 g 18k Gold ring with a yellow stone in it . No idea on the stone but i will check it out later sometime . After finding that i kept up the pace but didn't find much more and so at 10.30am i left the beach . My total finds for today were £10.58p , 3 knackered Foreign coins and the Gold ring . So now i have found a Gold ring which i felt wasn't an easy find i have ordered my second Equinox 800 . The Equinox isn't all i had hoped in every way but it is 9 / 10 . The only things that could have been a bit better are software issues really . Maybe updates can be done ? They are a 10 khts frequency option on beach 1 mode so you can do dry tops without changing modes , And the other which cant be done through software is the poor battery endurance , charging every trip is awkward unlike the RNB charge on the Explorer. But anyway i like the Equinox . Its a little less capable than the Explorer and E.Trac in neutral ground but better in some trashy ground and better on some targets . Still dont rate the depth but then i still have to check other programs so the verdict is still out on that one . 9 / 10 .

Drowned Iphone. It rang up a solid 32 in every direction about 8 inches down in semi-wet sand. The whole time I was digging it I had visions of Mr. T-sized sterling silver bling dancing in my head. Boy, was I disappointed!

Well, we finally got some decent beach conditions today so I could really try my 800 out on the sand. Five hours of pure beach detecting fun! And I feel like I have to say this, even if I get raked over the coals by my fellow PI Club members. My Equinox 800 goes practically as deep on the wet and dry sand as my Garrett Infinium. There, I said it. Shocked the hell outta me too. I say practically because I gave up digging stuff 2 feet down a while ago. It's almost always a big piece of crap anyway. That Equinox was locating stuff a foot down easily, with the added benefit of target ID. I started out digging everything so I could learn, but then found that I could eliminate some can slaw and bottle caps by using all metal mode. If I got an little iron grunt on the edge of the coil along with varying ID numbers and tones, it was trash every time. Every single time I got a 19 or 20, it was a rotten zincoln, so I started weeding those out too. I think when I start to really get to know my Equinox and learn it's quirks I'll be able to weed out lots more of the trash. The pull tabs are what they are and you just gotta dig 'em. I think that whoever invented those things should be tied to a chair and forced to watch every single "Oak Island" episode 10 times in a row. I had forgotten how fun it is to hunt the beach with a VLF! I just thought it was the price I had to pay to find anything on my barren beaches. I honestly think my Equinox got every good target that my Infinium would have gotten on depth, plus way more of the smaller shallow stuff the PI would have missed. I do have to crank the disc up to 2 to get it stable in salt water, so that might be the reason. Poor Infinium. I sure hope it finds some gold in Montana that its new sibling doesn't, 'cause Ammie has a new beach machine. I got about $2 in change, the "gold" pendant is plated crap, the token and the lighthouse thingy were junk too. It's always fun digging jewelry though. The marcasite ring is 925.

Today I spent some time on the beach in a little bit of rain with the 800. It was a pretty good day because there were 3 Osprey troop planes overhead and a couple of helicopters carrying the President. Meanwhile on the beach there was next to nothing again with about 4 miles walked and only one little patch. This patch was both at the beginning and the end of my hunting of about 3 hours. I tried hard but the waves today were only about 1 ft and that was after a storm. There weren't many surfers out but that is not what this post is about. I found a few pennies and tried for better targets before returning and gridding the area. I gridded by overlapping my swings to locate all possible targets and then I heard the pennies which were only 3-4 inches. I had it on all metal and just kept digging and listening on Beach 1 standard but maybe 22 sensitivity. Then I heard an iffy target. I'm still learning so I dug. I dug some more and then down at least 12 inches was the earring. It was quite rusty but there is non-iron also. At the bottom of the hole it was wet. There was a layer there deposited from another time of bigger waves. This sand layer had built up over it. Time to grid more. I extended the 'patch' but overlapped my walking and went back over a hole I had dug a penny and it still had a target. Down I went again to that same layer, 12-14 inches deep. Out pops the other little earring. A bit of copper on the end with the wire. This is seeing real deep with a bit of a slower swing and knowledge that there is a layer. Those were the interesting finds. The other stuff is there too. Mitchel

I am by no means fully comfortable with my new 800 but I have read alot, watched the generous videos and played with all the bells and whistles so I decided to hit the beach this morning. There was no cut but there was a place near the embankment leading down to the sand that I know from years past has had a lot of people around it so I decided to give it a go. I was in Beach 1 with the sensitivity up a touch (22), but other than that I was planning to use the time to listen to how the tones corresponded with the targets. To my surprise I began to pick up good sounding targets right away. After two hours I had only worked an area about 40' by 40' and you can see the results below. Some thoughts: I had a hell of a time pinpointing. The pinpoint button was pretty good but all in all that was my biggest area of confusion. Where in the heck does a target 5 or 6 inches down hit on the coil? Anyway, that is definitely something I have to learn more about, I was terrible at it. Secondly; it is absolutely necessary to take the coil cover off each time you use the detector, especially in the sand. To my surprise I see that the coil cover is the only thing between the potting in the coil and the ground. (first full coil pic) I am a PI detectorist and so maybe I just don't know about vlf's but I was surprised to see the potting so easily accessed. After two hours of hunting, there was lots of sand under the coil cover and I am sure it began to affect the way the detector behaved. Anyway that's it. I thought I'd add a post for once instead of just reading everyone's contributions. Oh and P.S. - this is a killer detector and it made me look pretty good today.

Okay got out today for 3 hours... using beach 1, on the beach I was hunting on you could not go into the water even with lower sensitivity without falsing occurring... Beach 2 could run all the way up to 24 on the sensitivity without falsing in the water and the surf... I got a Gold the first time out very small kids ring 14k! I used stock settings the only thing I changed was the sensitivity, I'm old school like to start out with stock settings other than tones and sensitivity so that when I'm making the adjustments I get a Feeling for what's going on... This machine is super hot I had to dial back on the Sensitivity I was digging too many small non-ferrous junk targets..... (the beach I'm working is full of junk) The bad: There's definitely something messed up in the programming for the pinpoint! Hey Minelab I want a pinpointer I can turn on and it works the second I hit the button I don't want to wait for it! Quite a few occasions I press the pin pointer you could go over the Target and hear it like it was in the distance never gave me the Horseshoe to show where the center of the target was and never became loud so I could hear it! Sometimes I'd have to move back to the side of the hole hit the button again hit it again and then it would work..... After the frustration with the pinpointer I stopped using it! The lower shaft fills up with water and the coil cover fills up with water and sand so when you come out of the water onto the land The Equinox weighs more than a CTX now! And Incredibly nose-heavy at this point! Easy enough fix though drill a hole in the lower shaft so the water can drain out... I'm going to use some type of caulking for the coil cover to seal it to the coil... I usually don't use coil covers just for this reason! No matter how tight I tighten the cam locks you can still twist the shafts fairly easily But all in all this is the machine I've been waiting for most of my life!

This was hunt #3 for me putting me at 6.5 hours on the equinox now. I usually last about 2-3 hours a hunt due to needing a 2nd hip replacement so I envy those of you who can swing all day. I hit the beach in Ventura after school today hoping the storm and high tide would result in some erosion. I figured since it was cold, had just finished raining I'd have the beach to myself. I get out there and there is a family having a picnic and one of the women is in a bikini getting out of the water. Only in California will you find people in bikini's swimming in overcast 55 degree weather with a water temp of 57. I digress so here's how the equinox did on my black sand beach. I used beach 2 as I hunted the wet sand. The Equinox didn't disappoint. It was a dime magnet. I can't recall finding this many dimes (11) in such a short two hour hunt. The VDI was spot on from 24-26 on every single one. My first target made a slight chirp that was faint so i decided to investigate and it was a dime at least 3 scoops down. It isn't sugar sand so I was probably down about 16 inches in the heavy rock/pebble sand. The quarters were each 29-31 I had been using my Excal II on the wet sand and it's a great machine but tone only and now with accurate VDI on the Equinox I think the Excal is going to get a little dusty. The shore break is such that I don't get out beyond my knees so all i'm going to need are the waterproof phones. I didn't find anything of real value, I dug every target for the first hour and then cherry picked the high tones until I left. The nickel rang at 12. It was a foot down and no matter how many times I turned 90 degrees on it the VDI was 12. The junk hit mostly at 9 and 15-17. I dug two or three zincs and the VDI was 19-21 each time so after those 3 I just ignored those #'s for the remainder of the time. I didn't really expect to find gold as I need the summer so folks can replenish the sand. The couple times I dug an item with iron you could easily hear it. It made a sound like Pfft at the end of the tone. Interestingly enough i did get 3 different ghost signals where it said there was a target, I dug, dumped the sand checked the hole and the sand pile and the target disappeared. Made no sense whatsoever. Pinpointing was a chore. As good as I could pinpoint at the park the other day was as bad as I was today in the sand. I don't really use the pinpointer, I try to wiggle my way to locating the target. I dig, swipe the pile with my foot and scoop the target. Today I dug, swiped, scooped, swiped etc., etc. I'm willing to say the problem was me but it was an issue. I guess you could say I'm now an official Minelab Equinox Fanboy. I have complete confidence that if a ring of any shape or metal was under my coil I would have heard it clearly and cleanly. It handled the wet sand with little to no falsing. I bumped up the sensitivity to 25 just to see how it would do and it got a little chatty so I backed it down to 22 and it was quiet. It got so quiet that I turned up the threshold to where it was audible so there was at least a sound. One issue I seem to be having with the headphones is that they cover my ears so well that they really block out external noise. Twice now I've had people walk up on me and I had zero clue they were there. It could be that I'm just concentrating so hard that i'm zoning out or that my ears are the perfect size and fit for the headphones. I'm going to get a second equinox as soon as there is an inventory available. I'm going to get the 6" for the dirt and keep the 11" for the beach. The equinox works better out of the box for me than probably any detector I've owned other than the MXT or maybe the ATpro for turn and go detecting. I have to go to the Junk fair with my better half tomorrow at the fairgrounds so I likely won't get out again until Sunday. Best to all

Late this afternoon and into the evening (about 4 hours on the beach) I searched some of my normal spots. It was awful. I found next to nothing. Why? These are beaches and sub-beaches where I have found dozens of rings and thousands of coins. Sometimes the signals are so dense you just have to stop and come back the next day. Why the difference? Energy I would say. Tonight the few targets I found were very light (3-4 pull tabs, aluminum, partial pieces) and very few coins (less than 10). There were no rings, earrings or partial pieces of heavy metals. There was nothing down in the very low tide area and nothing at the high tide mark (such that it is) and no cut. The waves are less than 1 foot and the intervals are 13-15 seconds. Nothing is moving, collecting and washing up! The energy of the waves has created great pockets for me in the past. A couple of years ago during the El Niño you could go out on the beach at almost any time, any where and find targets that were worth keeping. There was a lot of energy in the water and in the waves. You had many days when waves deposited objects onto the wet sand beaches. The sand didn't build up. There were cuts. I'm using the same 3030, the same 17" coil and the same settings. I read the wave and tide reports. I knew this would be tough. Tonight made nugget hunting look easy! There is a reason why objects are and aren't there on the beach. Keep track of your energy. I was on the beach today and I had 3 different people walk up to me and ask about metal detectors. What kind do I need, who do I buy it from, etc. I usually have at least 1 or 2 people ask me every day. So that got me to thinking, and since I do my best thinking when I'm on the beach swinging my Infinium, I came up with a plan. Corporate sponsorship. Like race car drivers. All you dealers can send me free stuff and I'll wear your T-shirt with your business address and phone number on it when I'm on the beach. I'll even point to it and make sure they get your phone number when they ask me. That way you can spend 15 minutes explaining the difference between a PI and a VLF machine and I can be digging up gold rings instead of talking about it. I'm only half joking here.

We went to a beach here in Oz last night that we have flogged to death . So I thought let's see what the Equinox has to offer . When I use the 5000 , half of the beach has rediculous EMI (all the radar stuff around for beach rescue but the 5000 can deal with that ) Went down and the Equinox noise cancelled amazingly Then the surprise ......in all the 30 years detecting this beach we never have seen the mineralisation like last night . It was thick and gluggy and when you shine the torch it was glistening like nothing I have seen before . So we keep detecting as Nox was smooth as and 30 mins later we didn't have a target so I said to hubby I'm going to get the love of my life ( GPX 5000) as somethings wrong and it will tell . So when I get back I zoomed over the area and to my surprise NOTHING WAS WRONG . The Nox was exactly right as there were no targets ?. We were both a bit awe struck but really excited . So off into the water to see If it handles that plus crazy mineralisation .And it never changed from its smooth running . Only got $3 but this beach is flogged by us and many others . We are happy as pigs in mud . Oh and the other thing I have never had before to prove how mineralised it was I could not pinpoint with the Carrot as it sent it off something crazy .

This is my second hunt for this month , my first was on the 5th when i had £8.01p and the beach was mostly quiet for finds due to the depth of sand and stones on the beaches. Today i went for a 9am start and worked the tide out , its a very short tide and i didn't expect much though there was a bit of bad weather last week and on Friday i had a dodgy gut so couldn't make then and yesterday i was busy. I travelled a long way West which is what i have been doing for a while now and walking all the way back to the center of the City . As soon as i got there and saw the beach i thought something was different . It was good and then i saw holes , damn i thought i have missed it all . I know of 1 other detectorist that works that part of the beach and he uses a CTX . I took my Explorer 11 . I got started and within a few minutes i was hitting coins , he missed many ! So started what i call carpet bombing the beach as when i look back it looks like i have bombed the Hell out of it with hole marks all over the place. For the first quarter mile i was digging more crap that good targets but as i got nearer to my usual hot spots that changed and my targets were getting close to 90% good targets with coins every few feet at times . By the time i got to my main beaches i thought i was going to see the finds rate drop like it has for the last couple of months there but it didn't and in places i was finding more and with less than an hour left for me to search i found a Silver ring my third for the year and then the coins kept coming . Till i got to a new wooden groin that has been put in then it all went quiet , at the same time i saw a man with XP ADX 150 i think it was or something like that and i thought right its time for food and home . When i got to the top of that part of the beach i looked over the concrete groin and saw my mate Allan with his Fisher 1236 and chatted to him for a bit , i showed my finds to him and said he should go to the beaches i have searched and use his smaller coil to cane the beach further . There are lots of nails all over the place and it makes thing hard . After raiding a shop for some food and drink i got the Bus home . I finished the search at around 2.30pm . My total for today were the Silver ring , a large pre Decimal Penny and 2 pre Decimal Half Pennies , a 1 Euro , 2 other Foreign coins and £68.56p in spendable coinage including 23 old style £1 coins that aren't legal tender now but can be banked into my account . I am in 2 minds about tomorrow but i might get a call from my dealer about the Equinox and want to be ready to go and collect it so Wednesday might be my next day out . And that will be with the Explorer 11 as well . Till i have sussed the Equinox and settings i wont shove into the breach my dear friends . Both pictures of both searches for this month so far.

Yesterday i finished work early in the evening and i got home and had some sleep till 1am this morning . I got the Explorer 11 and drove to the beach for a 2am start . I went straight to the normally best beaches and saw that the beaches had some cuts , though not very good ones . So i started and immediately i found coins and mostly it just stayed that way . Except for a few quiet and built up places . At around 6.30am i saw someone else detecting and we chatted for a while then went our own way . At 8am i finished and went home . The finds for this morning were a 1905 Edward V11 Silver Threepence , a very worn Young head Victoria Penny and a 1942 Irish Penny , 2 x 50 Euro Cents and a 10 Euro Cent and another foreign coin and £80.67p in stendable coinage . There were no gems about today which i was surprised at . My next search will be on Wednesday morning , i might be a bit knackered from work though . I finish work 12.30am that morning and need to get the Bus at 4.30am , tide is out sometime after 8am .
