I was a big fan of the Carrot, but then mine went on the fritz. I sent it in 10 days ago (under warranty) so hopefully returns as good-as-new. In the meantime I bought a White's TRX, which is about $20 more expensive. It compensates (somewhat) on the price difference by operating more cheaply (if you go the non-rechargaeable route, anyway) on two AA's. It will also work on a 9V, like the Carrot, but why would you want to except in a pinch? When the carrot comes back I'll do some side-by-side comparisons. But I've gotten used to the TRX and really like it.

The Scuba Tector is made by Deteknix and is a great water detector if you are just looking for rings ( maybe ) and coins. I was wondering around the net and was looking at MD-Hunter.com and here was a picture of my Scuba. I click on the picture of it and it went to three videos. I pick one of the videos I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It couldn't detect gold chain. So here I go digging out gold chain i'd found in the past. It didn't make any difference being one two are all three in a ball the detector didn't see them. I pulled out some nuggets and the results was the same as in nothing coming out of the Scuba. Now it detects rings great and my thinking on this is because of other metals in the rings. Even at 14 K gold that's only about 65 % gold. So you can forget about finding any gold chain with the scuba Tector . If i can't detect it in a ball with two others your not going to find one laying out straight. Looks Good. Chuck

I admit to have wondered about these little hand held detectors / pinpointers. The main thing being do they really deliver significant depth advantages over standard pinpointers? These are only air tests but at least you get an idea. Nice depth chart at the end of the video you can screen capture.

GMT Pin-Pointer I modified my GMT to fold down and hang on my pack belt. It works quite well with my GPZ 7000 with the monster 19” coil. If you lay the two detectors close together and manually tune the 7000 you will find a few relatively quiet EMI null frequencies. I normally run at frequency 22. When in use I lay the 19” coil behind me or far to side of the dig site to further minimize the interference. The GMT works well in the compacted length. It will still telescope out to full length for extended hunting in nail patches. Have a good day, Chet

I Have used my ML pin pointer 100% of the time on the gold fields with great success. They do save a lot of time and guess work digging and locating targets in confined spaces. Here in oz we are going through extremely high summer temperatures with high humidity which makes for unpleasant prospecting at the moment. Recently I have found a new use for my pin pointer around the house. My wife wanted a picture mounted on the wall, so got the trusty pin pointer out and found the stud in the wall to fastern the mounting point to (we have a steel framed house). It got me thinking more on what I could use the pin pointer for. I was out in the chook house hunting rats with my air rifle and foxy terrier / jack Russel dog the other night and managed to get a couple. I got the pin pointer out located and surgically removed the lead slugs from the rats so I could feed them to my pet diamond python. Might be a thought for KIWIJW in NZ when hunting ducks and other birds in locating lead shot before consumption. I have read on another forum that pin pointers are also good for taking to the shop when buying non metal boots for detecting. I have found that detecting of any type gives me relief from the fever when I cant get out swinging ! Cheers ozgold

I have been thinking the other day as I was digging yet another deep hole with a sweet sound how I wish I could just reach for my small discriminating pin pointer. Something small like a Garrett ProPointer. I could reach for one in my back pocket and check it down in the hole and than I can decide to leave it or clean the trash out. Sure would save some time. Sure I can modify my Tesoro silver U max and make it a stubby disc pointer, but its too big for me to carry around as I have enough on my back all ready. I don't see any sense of nugget hunters with a vlf buying one, but for PI users with a mono coil who just want a quick id...it would be a killer accessory. The way I see it the more targets I i.d. and decide to dig or not dig the more chances of me finding gold that day....

Oh yeah, gotta get me one of these!!

I got a new Whites waterproof pinpointer last week. Dunno if its operator error or bad unit? I am using the AA batteries it came with. When I turn it on to pinpoint a coin, it is stable for about 10 seconds, but then it starts to sound off on every dirt clod within a foot diameter of the hole . If I can pinpoint the target quickly, its ok, if not? Well then I start cussing/screaming at it. The book says something about the Ground Grab thing but this is all black dirt, and hardly any ground minerals. Before I send it back and get the orange Garret Carrot Propointer, I thought I'd ask for advice on the Forum? Am using it with my old Tesoro Lobo ST detector with 3 x 7 coil. If the pinpointer is within a foot of the LST coil, it goes crazy too. Never had these issues with my old Garrett Propointer? -Tom V.

What pinpointers are everyone using? In the market for one myself.

Just thinking about the possibilities, some assumptions are necessary to further the thought. Let's assume the Deus introduces the 5X9 coil as expected. We know the Deus is unique in that the coil is the detector, no control box mounted on the shaft. We know the audio and control functions are wireless and transmitted to a very small pocket sized controller or wireless headphones. The Deus seems to be very accurate on Ferrous, at what depth I can't be sure. So, other than something to function as a handle, the coil could be carried in a pouch or belt holster, brought out and switched on as needed to check the dig hole for ferrous targets and pinpoint non-ferrous. The existing 8" round coil might be a little too cumbersome for this concept, but the 5X9 would be a reasonable fit. I know there have been a few people who have fashioned the same concept with the Fisher Gold Bug machines with varying degrees of success. They still have to deal with a wired control box. I ran the Deus side by side with the GPZ the other day. All I needed was about 10 ft of separation to avoid interference between them. The Z reacted if you pointed the Deus coil at it, but otherwise they played well together, both machines switched on at the same time. Your thoughts?

Which pin pointers are compatible with Gold Racer and the Racer 2, The Minelab Pro Pointer was picked up by the Gold Racer any where within 5 feet of the coil while on or off. I used a White's TRX with a DFX and didn't have a problem. I sold the TRX before I bought the Gold Racer.

Is there a more powerful/deeper alternative to the usual pinpointers.? Need a small handheld, waterproof nugget detector, with a 2"-4" coil, suitable for snorkelling in small streams. Alternatively, a backpack mounted normal detector(in a waterproof bag), with a tiny coil directly held in the hand, or on a small 6" handle, might work I know there is the NOKTA POINTER & GARRETT PRO POINTER AT. (Lacking depth, and sweep coverage) Also seen the DETECTOR PRO Pistol Probes, VIBRA QUATIC & VIBRA TECTOR 730, & FALCON MD20. Would any of these work for me? (Possibly too low a frequency for nuggets) Anyone got any ideas

I just recently purchased the Garrett Carrot Pinpointer. I really like it. The issue is the GPZ7000 does not like to be within 4 feet of it. And that is with the pinpointer off. I swing the detector with my left arm. I put the pinpointer in my finds sack on my right rear belt side. Every time I swing right I would get a signal from the pinpointer. My pick, old pinpointer, and trash in the sack, no problem. But the Garrett Carrot sets the GPZ7000 off. I really like the pinpointer, but can't carry it with me. Will have to leave it with my water and lunch and go get it when the rare times I need it.

When I was a kid I was told it's not polite to point. The kid got lots of years behind him detecting now. One dealer sent me a pinpointer some years back but I didn't like the looks of it. To me it look like a box of M & M peanuts that you get at the show with a big pencil sticking out one end. The newer shape came out you can wrap your hand around it and this I like. So when I ordered a detector from Digger Bob I said I'd try another pointer. So now I find myself as soon I open the ground I reach for my pointer. Oh my thinking is why didn't I use the first one I had. If anyone is out there detecting without one do yourself a favor and buy one. I think back for all the years I could have cut down on time looking for the target I'd located. I know they are not cheap but what is anymore. Chuck

This post is inspired by the the question 1515Art asked at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/972-iron-detector/ "is there a small lightweight detector that would compliment the GPZ mainly by giving the operator a second look that reads for an iron signal on the target in question, something like a pin pointer with some decent depth made for iron." This question has of course been asked by many Minelab operators over the years, including myself. In my case being dissatisfied with the option of carrying a complete second detector around as not very practical (I tried it) I made this little cutie back in 2003. I chose the Tesoro Silver uMax as my base unit. I cut the armrest off at the end of the foam grip, in effect giving the unit a pistol grip. I removed the middle rod section and inserted the cut-down plastic isolator rod into the grip section. The isolator was cut down as far as I could go and still allow enough room to wrap excess coil cable. This ended up making the isolator 7" long. The stock 7" coil was too big, but Tesoro had a nice little 4" coil for the uMax. This was attached to the isolator with a Fisher nylon wingnut instead of the steel screw Tesoro used back then. I had to drill the hole in the isolator out slightly for the nylon wingnut. The overall unit was 15" long. The unit was very sensitive, easily getting a signal on a 2 grain gold nugget. It hit a 4 grain matchhead-size nugget at about 2". It hit small nuggets better than I really expected. It hit a silver dime easily at 5". Better yet, it had good iron and steel discrimination. The Silver uMax at that time had a suggested retail is $299.00 The 4" coil had a suggested retail of $89.00. I was able with discounts to build this for about $300 Something like this offers better than normal pinpointer ranges plus discrimination and so this may be something a person would consider and now there are even more detectors that might make a good base unit. I ended up selling this one but kept the pistol grip rod and adapted it to my Gold Bug 2 and 6" coil. However, I did recently try and sell a couple manufacturer reps on the idea. A factory made version would be cleaner and cost no more than a standard pinpointer. I do think many people want a pinpointer with more depth and iron discrimination. Tell you favorite manufacturer to make these!

Not too long ago I posted about converting a Tesoro Silver uMax into a pinpointer at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/980-tesoro-silver-umax-pinpointer-conversion/. I finally sold the Silver uMax, but I kept the shortened rod and put the slip mount for a Gold Bug 2 on it. This way I could convert my Gold Bug 2 into a similar setup which I still have today. I put it together this morning just to show it to you! It is a bit unwieldy with all the extra cable but it actually works just fine. The bent coat hanger is just a hook for hanging it off my belt. The entire unit is 16" long.

Someone posted this else where, after they sent in their pin pointer in to Garrett to have it repaired only to find out is was a Fake, Lucky for him he used Ebay Via Paypall and got his money back and the Son of a Chinese Meadow Lady has been reported, Can you tell them apart ?? my guess is the top one is Real but I am not sure john

It only makes sense to copy success. Garrett scored a home run with the original Garrett pinpointer, and now everyone is falling all over themselves trying to cash in on Garrett's success. I have used a lot of them and at this point it is getting a bit silly. Some are missing the point in that what really makes the Garrett unit great is the simplicity. Some of the new versions are suffering from feature creep, kind of like Microsoft Word and all those functions you really do not need. The real problem as I see it is I do not need version 20 of the same old thing. How about somebody do something different? I know what lots of us in PI detecting land want. We want something with far more punch than a regular pinpointer first. Second, iron disc would be great. When I was in Australia I hit a small nugget at ridiculous depth down into true hardpan. Folks, what once was gravel was now rock. JP was helping me chisel down to it. Finally he went to his truck and got a rare device. Coiltek once made a 3" probe/coil for the SD/GP pulse detectors. Just hook up in place of your main coil or use a switch box. This 3" PI coil packed some real punch and was a real help in finding that nugget. The problem with the Coiltek probes is they were too cumbersome to really run attached full time to the detector, and so usually were left in a truck or at best carried in a backpack. Then swapped out with the main coil to be used. This means they usually got left behind and were not around when you needed them. And they were brand and model specific. Finally, no discrimination. Many PI users have worked in tandem with a VLF in trashy areas, marking targets with the PI and then retrieving with the VLF. I have often trudged back to my truck for a VLF when digging an extra deep junk target in tailing piles. A VLF with a small coil and discrimination is a real aid in trashy ground, especially tailing piles. But again this is an unwieldy solution often not available when you need it. I even went so far as to build mini VLF detectors as shown at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/980-tesoro-silver-umax-pinpointer-conversion/ and http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/1028-fisher-gold-bug-2-pinpointer-conversion/ Even then however these are expensive propositions bulky and with too many features for what I really want. But it shows the need. There is a company that could do something almost overnight to address this market - Tesoro. Unfortunately listening to customers is not their strong suite so I have not wasted any time trying to lobby them with this idea, but here it is. The Tesoro Compadre. This is a complete single knob VLF detector that sells for ------ $160.00!! That's right folks, less than some of these hand held pinpointers. Now what it needs is a small 100% plastic pistol grip and a 3" or 4" coil. Yes, they had one of those off the shelf also they could use. All the little coil needs is to run a super short cable up the super short rod and hardwire into the control box. This should make the unit even less expensive but lets be generous - I would still pay $160 to get one. One knob, variable discrimination, single 9V battery. It would look almost identical to my Silver uMax version only no metal in the handle, no exposed cable, and one knob. It would blow away every pinpointer on the market. Alternative. That Coiltek 3" coil direct mounted to a PI control box of similar design. No disc but more punch, more ability to ignore ground. That's my ideas. What do you want? Be realistic - asking a Garrett Pinpointer to have the depth of a 3" coil will not happen. What do you think we need still in the pinpointer market? If you have a pinpointer, what do you like about it? What do you not like about it?

Has anyone tried using a Sunray probe for small nugget hunting? It seems to me that a sunray probe attatched to shaft of a GB Pro or a F75 would work great in places where a larger coil would be too big, like in cracks and around rocks. Since the Sunray workes off of the detectors control box it should have good depth and sensitivity.
