As for chemicals, don't use acetone. Isopropyl alcohol is least destructive I'd say, followed by cleaning solvent (benzine / naphtha?). Lemon oil / juice as a natural alternative.. Mechanically I often use guitar picks.. dunlop nylon 0.6, 0.73, 0.88 or 1 mm. They have a relatively sharp edge, but do not scratch anything.
