  1. Mike, Good to have someone else from Carolina here on this website! I'm pretty much like you and real thankful for the Detector knowledge base here as I learn so much every day I'm here. Most knowledge I have is what I learned in the last couple months from those here who know more than me (pretty much everyone) about the world of metal detecting. Like you I find it all very interesting. I had got back into it some 10 years ago but just a couple of years then I went back to work and got away from it again. Now trying to catch back up. For whatever reason I'm not sure, but I'm much more hungry to learn all I can about detecting than I have ever been before. So if you are hungry for detecting related knowledge stick around and you will get your fill for sure. Terry
  2. I can honestly say I had much better luck with the Thermacell than anything else that I have used. I was never was out more than 5 hours at a time with it Mainly, I used it while sitting in a stand hunting and I would generally hunt only 1/2 a day at a time. You don't want to be slapping at mosquito's while you are in a deer stand. I hadn't thought about it till just now but one thing I do often wear in the fall to protect myself against mosquito's and it doesn't involve chemicals, is a Bug Suit, but I need good visibility so I don't wear the net over the head part of the suit. That's where the Thermacell comes in. Between the bug suit and a Thermacell I suffer very little. The Thermacell does take a few minutes to kick in but once it does it's like you are invisible to the mosquito's. Just change the butane and pads every 8 hours. Now i was sitting and not walking or moving much which I think helps maintain the protective "bubble" around one's self. I can't say how it would work if a person was walking or moving around a lot. Terry
  3. I think we are all anxious to hear your report back when you get a chance to check it out. I am sure they gave it a good going over before they let it out the door. Terry
  4. I have a cure for the Ticks too. They are ALWAYS bad in my area from the late spring almost into winter. Permethrin is the answer for them. Probably also toxic but ticks down here are in the legions thick as can be Chiggers. Put some on your boots and spray some on your pants below the knees and you won't have a problem with them. Supposed to last a couple washing's or more and still be effective. Terry
  5. I can't say about the toxicity but they might keep one's offspring from having tiny heads due to mosquito bites. At a minimum they will let one get a break from the buzzing and biting. Some may worry about it being toxic and I'm not sure it isn't, but at my age and all the toxic things I've been around, ate and drank it's the least of my worries. Your experience may vary.
  6. Maybe this will be the science behind the future metal detection industry? Many didn't like paying 10K for a "Z". Bet they would pay a lot more for something like this revised for use for gold and mineral searches!
  7. They are a odd sort of device almost like a large handwarmer. You put the butane cartridge in the ThermaCell and these little perfumed paper mats also come with the kit and you slip one in front of a little window opening in the cell. When you turn it in it lights up and blows hot air through the little mat. You attach the cell to your cloths. After it's going a few minutes it forms this bubble of protection around you. You will see and hear a mosquito come near you now and then or fly by but for the most part they are gone! Hunters buy them a lot around here. I have tried the deet etc too with little to no effect but these things really work. They aren't a bad hand warmer either. Be sure to buy the KIt as it comes with everything you need to get started. There are different flavors of scented mats that you can by but I like the unscented ones myself the best. Terry
  8. Before the next trip purchase a couple ThermaCell's, 1 for you and 1 for your partner unless you don't like your partner . They are the only thing I have found to work almost a 100% at keeping mosquito's away. They are amazing! Walmart or most sporting goods stores sell them. Terry
  9. Now that's what I call real customer service! Glad they are fixing you up Chuck. I know your dying to get out there to find and dig something. I'm glad White's is showing the side of them that we most appreciate.
  10. Unfortunately for whatever reason they don't make a Concentric coil for the Eureka Gold. The 15 did hit the penny at over 15" and also the 9mm bullet at 15" in the 6.4 freq. It may have actually done a bit better with the 15 but the wind was a factor and a darn plane happened to fly over as well right when I was trying to hear the low volume of the speaker.
  11. I feel pretty well set now for coils as I have both the above on the way.
  12. I got lucky and a friend did me a favor and I should have one on the way. Terry
  13. Hey Fred, I was concerned due to the size of the coil. I was getting the best response with moving the target past the coil in both directions which, since I was using my left hand in moving the target made be reach and put my head in or near the range of the coil. Had I been thinking, I would have just used my right hand instead of my left which would have allowed me to be farther from the coil but it didn't occur to me at the time. I'm kinda fussy when it comes to keeping anything that might have metal away from the coil. I always buy the upper non metal shaft for my PI detectors and I always run the coil wire straight up the shaft leaving no turns of wire in the lower part of the shaft. I see guys doing the air tests and setting the targets down in range of the coil and it bothers me. I'm just funny that way.
  14. If I had to pay a grand for this detector I wouldn't be doing this test. Fortunately I got if for less than 1/2 of a grand shipped in unused condition. I'm thinking it will do OK. I've heard it does well on mineralized ground though I'm not sure I'll see much of that. I like the uniqueness of having 3 frequencies to play with. It was put out there all alone, looking for a home, so I raised my hand and took it in. In this land, it's not a favored one, but I'll learn it the best I can. Maybe it will pay, I'll find out one day if it will bring some gold my way. Lord just put some yellow under her coil and make me a happy prospector, smiling, while I dig it out of the soil!
  15. Just playing with the Detector today as I was curious as to how the 3 coils I have would do in the air. The 3 coils I have are the 10X5 stock coil, the 8" round Minelab coil and the 15" Round Coiltek WOT coil. All coils are DD. There are no mono coils for the Eureka. I used the same 3 targets for all 3 coils tested at all 3 Frequencies. The Sensitivity set to max, Threshold 3/4, Disc in all metal, Signal set to Boost and Volume max. I used 3 different coils and only 3 targets: a 36 gn. 22 cal bullet, a 115 gn 9mm bullet and a 1899 Indian head cent. Results are not exactly as I expected. Used headphones for most of test but afraid phones may be interfering with WOT coil so took them off doing that test so with the low volume audio on that detector coupled with wind noise etc may have reduced slightly the depth of the Wot coil. 10X5 stock coil 60 Khz 20 Khz 6.4 Khz 22 bullet: 7" 22 bullet: 9": 22 bullet 8" 9 Mil bullet: 8" 9 mm bullet 9" 9 m bullet 9" 1 cent: 9" 1 cent 11" 1 cent 11" 8" Round Coil (All coils are DD") 60Khz 20 Khz 6.4 Khz 22 bullet: 9" 22 bullet 10" 22 bullet 10" 9 mil bullet 9" 9 mm Bullet 10.5" 9mm bullet 10.5" 1 cent 10.5" 1 cent 10.5" 1 cent 13" 15" Round WOT coil 60 Khz 20Khz 6.4 Khz 22 bullet 9" 22 bullet 11" 22 bullet 11" 9 mm Bullet 12" 9 MM bullet 12.5" 9 mm bullet 14" 1 cent 16" 1 cent 15" 1 cent 15.5"
  16. Steve, Steve, Have you tried the RC 40 10X13 coil yet on the Racer 2? I hear it gets better depth than all the other coils for the racer 2. There is a short review of it at Link deleted since Findmall Forum update broke all old links Tester claims to have found a wheat cent at 10". Terry.
  17. I really want to get the 14X9 Evo. I could see it as a coil I would use a lot being smaller and lighter than larger coils but better ground coverage than the 8" mono. I would like to see a side by side test of this coil and the 14X9 Coiltech "Blitz" for comparison. Terry
  18. Yes I did and I was impressed by the reviews. Over on Gerry's website there is a good review about the 14" mono and how sensitive it is to small gold with the GPX. The 18" Elite is also available now as well. At the point in time where I became aware of those coils I already had a 16" NF round mono but no elliptical's and a couple of folks mentioned the NF evolution 17X13 and I happened on one at a good discount so I went with that. There is a thought that there is a bit of extra "Hype" around these newer coils and to some degree there probably is. These newer higher tech coils do seem to be enhanced but maybe some of that is in part due to the GPX machines they are attached to. The downside of some of these newer coils, they are more expensive and can be heavier. The Detech 15" ultra DD is a heavy coil. I was away from detecting for a few years and I see some improvement in the build quality over all of coils. There is nothing wrong with the commander coils either that I can see. They seem to be a tough and reliable coil. I put my used NF 16" advantage coil on my GPX yesterday just to get an ideal of how it felt and to verify it worked OK, it did and it was surprisingly light for such a big coil. the downside of it is that with it being spoked, I could see it hanging up on things. I also checked out a 8" beat up commander mono coil I had bought a while back and I put a new skid plate on it. It worked fine as well. I feel I saved a lot by buying used and so far every thing I bought appears to work as new. Terry
  19. Jasong, I hope it is the best for me also as I bought a Demo NF 17X13 Evo earlier today on Ebay. I want to thank all who contributed. I am thinking I would like to also get a 14X9 mono but I'll hold off on that for now as I don't need it till July anyway. I didn't think I would end up with so many coils. I now have a 8" commander round mono, the 11" commander round mono, the 11" commander DD, the 15" Detech Ultra DD, the 16" Nugget finder round mono advantage, the nugget finder 17X13 evolution, and Steve Herschbach's 25" Nugget Finder round mono advantage (Per Rex). I kinda see a gap there between the 11" and the 15 that I think the 14X9 Blitz or Evolution would fill very well if I go that route. Terry
  20. Steve is right. I didn't notice you had a Gmt already. I was thinking to go to Chicken this year myself but now am leaning toward staying in the lower 48 instead as the drive to and back from AK is so long especially from North Carolina. Problem I'm having though is that I keep thinking of all those tailing piles. You know there is some gold in them! Best of luck to ya. Terry
  21. I just ordered a demo 17X13 NF Evo off of Ebay at a nice discount. I feel real good that I have the right ammo now for most any situation.
  22. Since you have a MXT already the gold racer sounds like as good a choice as I could think of if you are looking for a VLF machine. Many I think would put the GB-2 right up there with the Racer but the Racer has the edge for sure on small gold at 56khz. Just my unprofessional opinion. Terry
  23. Just revisiting this as it fits right into my interest for coils for my GPX.
  24. I just learned from the owner that the 25" NF Coil I just purchased today once belonged to Steve Herschbach. Small world. Terry
  25. There's always one A-hole in every crowd. In this case it really fits him don't it!
