  1. I noticed while air testing that even tiny nuggets can be heard much farther from the coil when wearing my gold wedding band so now I always wear my ring while detecting!
  2. Sad thing too is that the people pushing to ban it have never done it so they really really have no clue. I think they should at least allow small dredges of say 4" or less if they want to prevent large scale dredging. That would at least allow for "hobby" dredging and have minimal environmental impact if any.
  3. Rod, Paypal has become a fairly safe haven for a buyer. Unfortunately for the seller we are stuck with having our received payments in Pending (limbo) Status for a unfair amount of time. Up to 21 days or longer though I usually have got my money within 7 days. I have bought and sold 2 or 300 items on Ebay over the years and have 100% feedback but still they hold my payment up. No sure what I have to do to convince them I am an honest seller?
  4. I can't blame you but I have sold a number of items lately some from this website and bought a few as well and I noticed that a large number of those folks either selling or buying seemed to have few posts and most often just came to the website either to sell or buy something. So far all buyers have been reliable and I got paid. But I see your quandary with you living in Oregon. If I lived there a Whites detector would carry some weight. I was out in Oregon lately and envy you. It's a great place to own a gold detector with bordering on Nevada and California, not to mention being a sportsman's paradise. Good luck whatever your choice. Oh, I guess I posted this at the same time you made your choice. Let us know how it goes with the G2 purchase.
  5. I'm told the Teknetics G2 is the same as the Gold Bug. Below is a link to what looks like a real good deal on a used one with a 5" and 11" coil. Terry http://www.treasureclassifieds.com/metal-detectors/teknetics-g2-for-sale-325-00_i3616
  6. Just make sure it's not the old original Gold Bug from the 80"s. The way you can tell is the old model has just knobs, no screen. The Newer gold bug has the digital screen/controls. The original could work but much better to have the newer. If you want to go old school with knobs get the gold bug II as it's great for small gold and much better than the original gold bug but may be hard to find for under 500 dollars.
  7. So sorry to hear it was lost. Hope it does make it to federal court and they see it different.
  8. If it is possible I'm sure you will figure it out. I can imagine that the places you detect are a soup of objects, much of it iron. It does seem very possible that the sensitivity that you require to find the tiny objects you seek is taking a beating with all the iron and other often larger objects in close proximity to your tiny targets. Good luck SL
  9. Color blindness could sure be one of the reasons but I think most of it has to do more so being distracted. We sit and sit at the light and as soon as our eyes move away from it that's the exact time when it changes.
  10. Although some in the past have sold their medals for much more than the value of the metal, for most, the value of that medal is of course priceless. It's been a thrill for me to watch the best in the world compete in so many different sports. It's generally the only time the best in the world come together to compete. I was happy to see the US metal in some events they haven't metaled in many years. I was impressed with the US women in general as they have come to dominate the world in many sports.
  11. Funny Story but kinda sad too. I gotta say that here in North Carolina things are generally kept more simple than a lot of states and I appreciate that. The beaches are still free to access. However there are folks that move here that don't have that relaxed southern attitude and want to make life more difficult. Very recently there is a lady that owns a home at a NC beach trying to sue the local government so she can keep people off her beach. Fortunately so far she cannot. So it's not always the local or Federal Government that pushes to limit our access. It's often some person or more often some "group" that has somehow forced the government to act. Access to public lands I think is one of the most important issues to outdoor folks like us. That's one of the reason's I support the RMEF (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation). The organization has been great for getting public access to public lands that have been "land locked" by private property especially in the western US. Over the years they have worked to purchase Millions of acres of private lands to give us access to once private property or easier access to public lands. At the same time it gives wildlife more room to roam and better habitat as well. It's a Win/Win for all of us who enjoy the outdoors. It's not just helpful to folks in the west but the RMEF has also worked to help reintroduce Elk to many eastern States. Many talk the talk but few walk the walk. If you want to walk the walk find a way that fits you to do more than talk about such issues but talking about such things is a good start.
  12. I hear ya Chuck. It's got gold or prospecting, Treasure or anything related I will at least check it out. Also looks like you are about to have Gold on your member! Or maybe better put, three more posts and you'll be a gold member, least I think that how it works.
  13. Thanks a lot for the history lesson on Nome's Gold. Looks like you shared a part in it. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!
  14. For what it's worth the new season of Bering Sea Gold Starts Friday August 26th on the Discovery Channel. I like the show but often the first in a continuing series is mostly a rehash of last years events where they milk the old film. Guess we will see. http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/bering-sea-gold/
  15. Sounds incredible too. I'll have to give it a try.
  16. Tom, I'm glad you are still here to tell your story. Good for you for getting off the beaten path to find some gold. Keep at it an you will find some I'm sure. I learned my lesson about climbing up a steep incline when I was young. I was walking along a railroad track with a creek to my right and a cutout rock hillside on my left. The hillside went up almost vertical with a 2 or 3 ft terrace about every 30 ft in height. I decided to try to climb up to the first terrace. It didn't seem too bad going up as I was able to find some hand and footholds in the rock but after getting up to the first terrace I realized I would be much more difficult to get down the way I got up. I could not find my way down from the first terrace so I had to climb up to the second terrace then up to the top and to find a better way down. I have always been more careful about climbing up a steep hill since. One can see the handholds and feel for the foot holds going up but the footholds especially are harder to find going down. One bad thing about life there is a lot of things we can't foresee till we are in a fix.
  17. I agree and feel it is not a bad idea to buy second hand provided the following it true: 1. You can verify the detector is in good working order and is not a counterfeit. If you never used the detector before have someone go with you who is familiar with it to verify everything is in order. 2. You feel comfortable that it's a fair price and if something changed where you didn't need it anymore you could get all or most of your money back by reselling it. I have bought several used detectors and have had good luck with them all and no problem reselling. Consider buying a protective cover for it so you can keep it's resale value intact.
  18. Wow, That's an amazing setup with the liquid Mercury Mirror. Who dreams up these things? That seems like real world Star Trek stuff.
  19. Brunks, I assume you are in Australia. I was looking at the numbers you quoted. TDI Pro Oz 3300 AUD. Whites doesn't seem to sell that model anymore over here but in doing a search I found a new one advertised at less than 1600 American dollars over here in the US from a dealer. If you assume a US Sale price of 1600 with the AUD conversion rate alone that comes out to 2073 rounded off. So somewhere along the way you folks in Oz are paying over a 1000 more AUD than we do even figuring in the exchange rate which I think likely affects the resale value also. I don't know if a person in Oz can buy a Whites detector directly from the US but it almost looks like it could be almost cheaper to fly round trip to the US to pick one up than to purchase directly from a Oz dealer? So over here since we don't pay near as much to start with if the resale value drops to only 1000 or in US dollars it's still not near the loss of value % wise as it would be in Oz if that makes sense. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Whites-TDI-Pro-PI-Metal-Detector-with-12-Waterproof-Spider-Search-Coil-/291840963154?hash=item43f313b252:g:xwwAAOSwRGlXqQgo
  20. Most of us that hunt gold just want to see them hunt gold and that's all but how many people actually hunt gold? It's a pretty small percentage I'm sure. So I see why they want to make it more than just about the gold. They need more than that 1% if that to watch and keep watching so there has to be a story there too. Yea there has to be sponsors etc that's kinda part of capitalism. It's like life, it's not all fair and the good guy don't always win but that's how it is. Tom is a good pic for something like this. He's young, he's fit, he's smart, he knows both sides of camera. He's a very thoughtful young man too. He didn't have to take the time to take a stranger out fishing but he did that for me. If he makes the cut and I really hope he does, I'll definitely be tuning in.
  21. Jason, As some would say I hear ya but I don't think a good prospector is exactly normal. You might think yourself normal but most normal people wouldn't suffer the discomforts, take some of the risks and go to the hard to get to places that a true prospector would. I think any prospector has a bit more of an adventurous spirit than normal people is all I'm saying and I am sure you fit the description of a prospector. I do really respect the true prospector that can actually make a living from prospecting. I tried briefly in 05 and couldn't see a way to make it work so I went back to normal work for another 10 years. I like to dabble in it but not willing to go all in and risk my limited finances. It's a tough gig with risks every step of the way which maybe is one of the reasons we tune into these shows even though we see that some of it is staged. Terry
  22. If your serious. Take the Gig, it's once a once in a lifetime thing.
  23. Considering many detecting are past their prime as I am lets hope it isn't a prospecting version of Naked and Afraid.
