  1. Quite true! It's a 40 foot Toy Hauler, lots of stuff can go wrong. It's 5 years old now, has 10,000 miles on it, a '17. No worries, I've fixed lots of these problems, this is my 4th RV. So far nothing has been too expensive. My wife ate some bad watermelon we think.
  2. Thanks! I ordered the pendant before I left, but shipping was slow. They make them for many popular detectors. The button is probably 1800s, it's brass and very thin, probably the thinnest I've found here. Got over 100 of them in this one field, they range from mid 1600s to the early 20th century.
  3. I was hoping to find some older stuff, at least I did find an old military button. Not only is the beach very clean, there are supposedly a lot of detectorists there. Saw a guy swinging an Equinox with the 15" coil on it, don't think he found much because I hit that spot earlier in the day. I watched him dig for a while, but he didn't pocket anything. Honestly I found most of my coins and rings not by hunting the water, but by estimating the tide level at peak beach time from the day before. I learned a lot, and it's a heckuva lot easier to dig the beach than the farm! Got the coil coin from Etsy, someone laser cuts them I think.
  4. Whooo, what a week. Back home from the beach, I didn't post my last hunt but I found .99 in change. 51 coins total, 3 rings, military button and some small stuff. No silvers. 😵 Got a 50 Centavos piece and 1 South African Rand, so I scored over $5. Oh, and an Anvil... My wife got food poisoning (she is ok now), my RV water heater element blew, and the outside faucet decided to crack and blow the knob out. Filled the underbelly with water. That lovely trifecta made us decide to head back a day early. I love beach hunting! It must be my luck but GB never went higher than 10, I only got EMI near a water tower with cell service on it. Clean, clean beach. You got what the Equinox said you did for the most part. Got many more beaches in my future! Today I hit the farm, decided to grid a farm house where scouting didn't turn up much. All I found in 4 hours was one 1994 dime and one button. I got a 36 on the Equinox, thought "yay!" And dug a huge crudely cast lead ingot. 😀 It's about 3" wide and is heavy. Yep, back on the farm. I guess we all have these days, you should see all the bottle caps and aluminum I dug to get this. Yikes! When I got home I had this waiting for me: It's a 1954 silver quarter cut to the Equinox coil shape. It came with a bead chain, I replaced it with a snake chain. Thus far I have only found two silver coins! Maybe it will be a voodoo talisman for the future. 😀 I thank everyone yet again for their advice and encouragement.
  5. Nice finds again! And family participating to boot. That curio cabinet is really sharp. The Bowie is almost a sword! Wow.
  6. I agree, but electric fences are right out. 😀 The other thing to consider is the barbed wire indicates a desire to keep people or animals out, so it's protecting something. It would be a sign of traffic, but I would try to get inside where it was to start looking for foundations. Ridges, rises, and level areas. When you hit lots of iron you've found a barn or farmhouse! I mentioned it once before, find large old trees that are on field boundaries. Search where the shade would be after mid day, if there is any grass it will be greener than the other areas. I've found old coins and buttons there. Picture someone taking out their handkerchief and flinging their pocket money!
  7. I chose the Equinox 600 mainly because it is waterproof and it has a feature set that is very simple. I like the sounds it makes probably because I am a musician. It's probably more an aesthetic decision. I like how it feels, both figuratively and literally. Every detector will find something. My Garrett Ace 400 isn't waterproof, doesn't ground balance, but it scored some of my best finds. I'm just not a fan of the toy-like sounds it makes, it's a harsh sound without nuance. Kinda like nah-nah-nah ding! Yes!, and you get a pull tab. 😵 This all sounds high-falutin, I'm sorry. So far I've used a Bounty Hunter, the Ace 400, and the Nokta Makro Simplex. The Equinox feels more like a real analytical tool than any of the others. The 800, it seems, takes it to another level. I'm just starting out myself, I hacked around a long time ago but now am in it for good. There are others here with a wealth of info on many other detectors, I'm sure there are many other choices. 🙂 I feel I am right where I need to be until fish finders merge with detectors. 😀 The proof is in the finds I guess. Not doing too bad!
  8. Great tale, RVPopeye! I can almost smell yer pipe. The Maine coast is a beautiful place, even when yer timbers be shiverin'. Fair winds an' following seas on your next hunt.
  9. Joe, I was mystified when I dug that up. No idea why anyone would chuck an anvil in the ocean. Truly strange find. 🤪 Ring could indeed be rolled gold. Not going to try acid on it, my wife won't let me, but maybe specific gravity when I get home. It looks like it was made today. Not a scratch.
  10. Only got one more day here, really didn't find anything else today, just $1 in change, all clad. Nothing really interesting so no post tonight! 😀 Thanks for all your help and encouragement.
  11. Thanks! I do have a loupe, and I looked it over completely for marks or anything. Isn't all true gold stamped somewhere? There is nothing noticeable but nice shiny waxy gold.
  12. Welcome Passin Thru, Here's my 2c... 😀 Seriously, seems to me if you want to upgrade to more tones cheap, and maybe join in some water hunting, the Nokta Makro Simplex+ will give you 99 tones if you want. I was going to get one to replace my non-ground balancing Garrett Ace 400. It's around $250. However, the local dealer pointed me at the Minelab Equinox 600, and told me I would never regret it. I haven't other than it's not an 800. 🙄 It's about $650. I've used a Simplex and liked it but love the symphony the Equinox plays. If you're technically and musically inclined and have no problem with Bluetooth, the Equinox is it. I've been stomping farmland for 7 months now, and the beach for 6 days. It's a heckuva hobby. Since I'm retired and can get out almost every day I think people are getting bored with me, but this forum is the place for advice and tips. There is no free ride, no magic settings or machine, but the folks here are top notch. You're doing great with the Bounty Hunter, learning a new machine can be trifling but the "modes" each one has will get you off and running. Come back with photos and for fine tuning! Meantime have some trash. We all dig it. 🤪
  13. Thanks! I figured it all out, just posted another days' stuff. Did pretty good. 🙂 So ya call the tide lines edges? I know what the troughs are.
  14. Went early today to the larger beach. Another beautiful day, even the water was tolerable. Low tide is strange here, you go from having about 50 feet of beach to over 200. It's difficult to read but thanks to advice I've been getting from y'all I did great, at least for me and the 4 hours I was out. I searched along the tidal pools for a while, walked about a mile. Didn't find much of anything, not even an iron grunt until I found a couple of coins and this metal anvil. I assume it's for making jewelry. Shown with the ring I dug yesterday for size: Ran into a guy swinging an Equinox like a golf club, thought of getting a video, it was comical. Exchanged pleasantries and moved on. Only detector I saw all morning. Did a little more beach reading, some advice I got was to go knee to waist deep in the water, but the tide was so far out from where it normally is it didn't seem worth it, so instead coming back I aligned myself at knee to waist level to high tide. Here is a photo taken from where low tide was: Here is a shot showing the slope and where I found the coin line: The umbrella is at high tide. Hit the coin line! Did pretty good for a novice in only about 1/2 mile: 1970 Mexican Cinquenta Centavos piece, (fitty cent), 4 relatively new clad quarters, Jeff nickel, dime, and a memorial. Most money I found so far. Copper bracelet and a Stainless spinner ring. Best find of the day and hence the title: Little gold wave ring. ID'd at 1. Not sure if it's solid gold but it's certainly 24k plated, really waxy feel. No marks. My wife loves it. Found it leaving at the entrance. She took the spinner too. 😀 Here's my take on that - People get to the beach and are so glad to be here they run and drop all their stuff. I found the bracelet and both rings near the beach entrance along with the Mexican coin and the Jefferson. By then there were so many people in the beach it was time to go. Tomorrow I'm hitting the areas early where everyone sets up . 😈
  15. Thanks Steve. Y'all have been a great help. It's kind of a unique situation here, the tide is literally 7-10 feet. A hundred feet of beach or more at low tide, next to nothing at high. Early on at peak low the above was my view back at the beach. The umbrella is sitting at high tide! 😀 What I ended up doing which found me the coin line was going where my waist to knees matched up with the high tide line. Scored a bunch! The water was about 75-100 feet past me. These tidal pools produced some stuff but the real sweet zone was a few feet from the top cut. I found older coins in the pools.
  16. Well folks, I solved the problem. Thank you all. It was exactly that the cover I had on there to look cool was messing up the display. Took it off and no issues today. On with the show! 😎
  17. Thanks! You're "low country"? Lucky dawg. Tried to move either here or Beaufort but the market wasn't right. You can go out almost every day. Probably find the Cartier in Hilton Head... 😀 Not going to the pier, that beach has too many people. Parking is horrible this week. I go to North Beach at the light/fort, and this hard to get to fishing beach.
  18. I'm determined to get some gold, but know the realities. Any find is a good one. She likes the quiet time when I'm gone. 😀
  19. The beach I'm going to this morning is mostly Atlantic waves. Definitely know to "fish" the troughs and never turn my back to the sea. 😀
  20. Yep used to do a lot from my boat in the Potomac river, then changed to surf casting when I switched to an RV. We camp almost exclusively at beach campgrounds. It's easier to clean finds than fish! When I think of all the stuff I could have found on the beach the last 15 years or so... 🤣 I've only been metal detecting for 8 months now.
  21. I'm using the sling to keep from putting the detector down. It doesn't bother me or restrict my swing, I have the Equinox coil set to about 1-2" above the ground with my arm fully extended. I'm 6'1" so that isn't an easy task. Another perk using the sling is that no one can snatch my detector. The scoop has a long reach anyway. 😀
  22. I've found a lot of them! Thinking of opening a fishing store 🤔 That's where all the heavy metals end up?
  23. Thanks Joe. As I wrote in another thread, I welcome all questions, comments and abuse. 😀 Even abuse can steer one in the right direction! Loquacious posts are also fine. I don't think I've ever come across a tl;dr post here. I've got one of those Calces365 pouches that has two zippered pockets and mesh to let the sand out. I have communicated with the person who makes them, he is really nice. They beat the Garrett bag by a mile on the beach. It looks like you're just dropping stuff in the bag. Great points and food for thought for tomorrow. Just looked at the weather and I even get one more bonus day this week, I'm afraid I'm going to bore everyone to death with my posts. That's why I try to think up clever titles. 😎
  24. No worries Al. I invite all questions, comments and abuse! I got what you were saying. Between you and Dan I think I am all set. 🙂
