  1. Minelab has released quite a few new detectors lately. Manticore, Equinox 700, 900 and recently the X-Terra Pro. What would you like to see in the new Vanquish model (if ever released)? New design? Waterproof? Less weight? Made a concept bellow (not real product).
  2. I would look at the Nokta Score/Double Score & Legend and the Minelab Vanquish line. Garrett's offering is the Apex.
  3. I used a Vanquish 540 for about a year... I have six detectors. I did well with it and liked most of what it provided except of course for the red color and high battery drain. I solved the battery drain buy purchasing an RNB battery pack and I "solved" the red color with a black rain cover. My detecting buddy also used a 540 at that time and did extremely well with it. In fact he now owns a detector at twice its price and often states that he would oftentimes prefer using the 540 instead.
  4. Would anybody know if on Vanquish 340 in the 'All Metal' mode, the baked-in recovery speed is the same as either in Coins Mode (fast speed) or in Jewellery Mode (medium speed), or perhaps it uses a slower recovery speed (just like the Relic mode in the 440 and 540 models)?
  5. Newby to the Manticore, been detecting 12 years using CTX, Equinox 800, Vanquish 540, & Excall for diving. I am wondering what settings you are finding most helpful looking for silver in trashy northern midwest park sites. I used it yesterday using out of the box settings which worked, located several iffy signals some payed off. Running sensitivity between 19-30, had lots of 98 numbers no matter the sensitivity didn't find silver. Dug a few deep nails and a bolt with washers all were deep targets. Not used of digging below my initial plug so my pinpointer would see the targets. I believe finding deep and overlooked silver targets will appear soon... Appreciate any helpful tips and settings.
  6. So you just got that new Minelab and it has a three year warranty, right? Well, sort of. 7. I would have been impressed too if they had released the FindX with a 9" ( or elliptical 10X8 ) stock coil instead of a 11". With a 11 coil the machine will be front heavy and they will loose a lot of potential customers , children , women , and more generally users looking for light machines . A 9 coil is much more cumfortable to use and it has very good depth and separation , and I dont understand why manufacturers continue to release new detectors with such big coils . Probably because bigger is better ... 🙂 Hopefully there are exceptions like the ML Vanquish 340 or 440 ( elliptical 10X8 stock coil )
  8. Don't get me wrong...I think Minelab already showed in the case of the Vanquish 340 how cheap a multi-frequency detector can be...practically, it's still the cheapest multi-frequency detector on the market. What does electronics mean at the highest level... Fighting detectors in the lowest weight / price category / does not have to be a priority for Minelab... What does electronics mean at the highest level... Fighting detectors in the lowest weight / price category / does not have to be a priority for minelab The price offer of Minelab Manticore, which is now 400 euros less.. than mine, is fine... and does not indicate a problem with Minelab at all. Here in *Europe.. Manticore with a large coil is now available for free.. for many it is a really tempting offer... On the contrary.. By producing many new detectors, Nokta can show that it is going somewhat in the direction that the Fisher company went until recently... where small changes meant a new detector model... simply too many new detector models in a short time. it reminds me of the times when Nokta created detectors under the two brands Nokta and Makro..
  9. Well, it's interesting "happenings" between Nokta and Minelab 🙂 Minelab has the 800. Nokta tops it with the Legend. Minelab has the Vanquish. Nokta tops it with the Double Score. Minelab has the X-Terra Pro. Nokta tops it with the FindX Pro. Minelab has the Voyager. Nokta tops it with the FindX. Then there is the upcoming Nokta relic and gold PI detectors. I think it's safe to say that Nokta has become the proverbial "thorn in the side" for Minelab. Now, I guess it's about due time that Nokta puts out the successor to the Legend.
  10. Palzynski and I are both former Ace Apex owners. We both had some legitimate problems with our purchases that had to be addressed by Garrett. I really like the Ace Apex. It is one detector that I miss owning because of its excellent display and controls layout. That display and controls layout are one reason that I really like my Garrett Axiom. Another reason is that my Axiom works really well at all of the sites that I have used it. I just can't say that for the Apex. There are many detectors that simply don't fit the ground conditions that I most often hunt in and the Apex is one of them. The same goes for the Minelab Vanquish models and even the Equinox 700, 900, CTX 3030, Etrac and the earlier White's SMF detectors along with every single frequency VLF that I have ever owned. So all of this is just to say that sometimes its the operator, sometimes its the detector, sometimes its the quality of the location but all of the time, ground conditions rule over all three and the detector I'm using has to be able to first and foremost handle the ground conditions.
  11. well ive finally figured out actually told buy ml....when you get your new detector DO NOT imidiatly put the batterys on charge install and use the detector untill batterys are completely drained then charge it should take aprx 8 hrs while charging green lights will flash green and go solid when charged...if you imidiatly charge the charging light will never stop flashing but batts will still charge
  12. i got a feeling a new update is right around the corner GROUND BALLANCE tracking using the pin-point buttom to activate and a new 5 in round coil
  13. this is old news from when thisa detector came out....as you may have read or figured out the charger that came in the pro pack 540 is faulty but works ..you must completly charge and completly discharge the batterys 4 -5 times pretty much back to back.break in to get full power out of the batterys...the white minelab charger will not shut off the green lights will never stop blinking it takes about 8-9 hrs to charge you must keep track of the time....or buy a way better charger and batterys..eneloop is what ive read on many sites to be the best
  14. When comparing the Vanquish 340 programs separately, you have to take into account one more thing... that the coin program and the jewelry program and the all metal program have a different level of discrimination... the sperky program has a fixed discrimination set to 0, while the coin program has a fixed discrimination set to 10.... the program "all metal" does not have any discrimination set, but it has a setting with the setting "tone break" /tone discrimination at 0/... so such a setting can have an effect on the separation of good targets in iron... the Vanquis 440 and 540 models already have an independent discrimination setting in all programs, "and in this way, in my opinion, they can achieve somewhat better separation results in some of their programs..
  15. if you use lion batterys beware your battery display will not be accurate as well as low battery warning same with rnb setup
  16. A request for Vanquish 340 users (as I have no access to it now, but was asked this question): The recovery speed is baked into modes in all Vanquish models. In the 440 model, the recovery speed is fast in Coins Mode, slower in Jewelry Mode, and the slowest in the Relic mode. In the 340 model, the recovery speeds seem to be the same as in the 440 for Coins (fast) and Jewelry (medium) modes. What is the recovery speed in the 340's All Metal mode? Thanks!
  17. The Vanquish coil set has 3 elliptical coils ( no round coil ) : - V8 = 8X6 ( round 7 equivalent ) - V10 = 10X8 ( round 9 equivalent ) - V12 = 12X10 ( round 11 equivalent ) They all work very well , especially the V10 ( very light with depth perfos identical to a 9 round from my measurements ) , it is the Vanquish V340 and V440 stock coil . I like elliptical coils because they are more compact than a round coil . For example they are easier to put in a rucksack. Elliptical coils have a good iron separation because of their reduced width , and a very good ground coverage because they are longer than circular coils
  18. I entirely agree the Score stock coil is too big for general hunting . For me a round 9 inch coil ( or elliptical equivalent ) is the ideal compromise for inland coin/relic hunting , still compact size and very good depth . Unfortunately no 9" or equivalent elliptical ( 10X7 ) coil is available for the NM Score. And the SC24 ( 25 X 14cm ) is too small for me . I would be interested by a DScore if it had a 9"coil . ML did the same error with the Equinox a few years ago btw , hopefully Coiltek released a 9" coil for the Equinox later. Fortunately ML released the Vanquish 340 and 440 with the excellent 10X7 coil . As far as I know the Vanquish 340 is a best seller May be we will have to wait 2 or 3 years before Coiltek release a 9" coil for the Scores ? ... 🤐 Sometimes I wonder if the MD's companies managers and marketing people go in the field to test or simply try their detectors ...
  19. I currently use the Vanquish 540, it's a great detector and I have found 94 silver coins over a 3yr period, I absolutely love its simplicity. I want a waterproof detector, I'm leaning Double Score because to me, it appears to be a Legend without functions that I would probably never use. I hunt mostly coins, my 540 goes deep, I'm concerned the Double Score might not match the 540 depth, am I wrong. Would the Double Score be a good upgrade?
  20. Could you describe the 'double ring' of iron at depth (as opposed to nonferrous single ring as iron at depth)? Near-surface ferrous targets could double (or triple) ring for different reasons - does it sound different than the 'double ferrous ring' at depth? p.s. A question probably for @Geotech: does it make sense to explain the 'double ring' of iron target at depth as: 1) the Tx magnetic field magnetizing the ferromagnetic target by induction and the target returning the signal immediately, in phase, 2) the same alternating Tx field inducing eddy currents in the target which in turn produce Rx magnetic field, but this time the return is delayed. The delay between the two returns changes the way how a target sounds? I don't know how it sounds on the Equinox (and possibly on Vanquish by association), but I tried to imagine why deep iron should 'double beep' but deep nonferrous could show like iron but not 'double beep'...
  21. Great question! Yes it has been tried with the Tesoro Compadre many years ago. Skill plays a very important role. But each machine is different, so time on the headphones with the machine you are using is everything. I agree with the Vanquish for one reason - it works on a saltwater beach (SMF)
  22. About two years ago I bought a Chinese Mental Detector for some $40 thinking they are all the same. Kind members of this forum quickly set me straight and I got Vanquish 440. By no means I'm experienced or even succesful, but I have a technical background and the interest and the time to read about metal detecting, ask questions, experiment with settings, and be happy swinging. And I think by now I know enough to appreciate the complexities involved in metal detecting. Now the problem: I've been asked, obviously being an expert :-), by a friend as to what fun detector to buy for his wife so that she could look for things mostly around their summer house in a forest in Europe (and maybe later elsewhere, like on a beach). To my eye the ground there is mild, but I don't really know. She probably doesn't want to look for anything in particular, just explore what may be under ground. The detector should be sufficiently easy to use so that she doesn't get discouraged at first and not super expensive as he is not sure if his wife would like the new hobby. The question I got was if the Xterra Pro was the right choice. He also looked at the Simplex Ultra. My answer was that the Vanquish 340 or 440 may not look as modern, but she may have a better luck with it as it may be simpler to set and more stable to operate and read. Am I wrong? Is there something else that I should have said?
  23. This leads me to, what I think, is a fair question: while I understand that the ability to swing and interpret the detector's signals is not all there is to finding things, it seems like a skill that people hone for years and cherish. Has a target-detecting competition ever been attempted where the detectors are standardized (and, importantly, simplified, so the ability to optimise detectors matters little) so that only the skill matters? Say, everybody gets the Vanquish 340 and let the best one win 🙂 How differently would people do?
  24. The friend's wife got the Vanquish 340, which was probably a good idea. The controls are superbly simple, understandable, and usable. I was afraid that the adjustments could be too crude, but that's the beauty of it. It's like with good cameras - the fewer the buttons the better (up to a point... :-). a The tone breaks and modes' notching are in reasonable places. There is All Metal Mode - reporting all targets and letting you investigate them. There is the same awesomely stable ID system as in more expensive detectors with the same technology. It behaves well enough in moderately bad grounds and on ocean beaches Modes have been assigned reasonable recovery speeds for their purposes - the Coins mode is pretty fast (not sure about the recovery in All Metals Mode - either the same as in Jewellery Mode (medium) or slower). And all that with nearly no need for fiddling with settings (and thinking about what else can you do to make it detect better) - just go detecting. 3 Modes + Sensitivity - one of them should work out... And, on top of it, it can identify and find things quite well.
