Steve Herschbach
Scratch the dark portion on a piece of unglazed porcelain tile (a streak plate). What color is the streak? I merged this thread with the other one you started on the same subject.

Reno Chris
The dark mineral is iron ore it is cementing the gravel. Very common worth zero. I know where I can grab a pick up load if I wanted.
klunker
All that glitters isn't gold. However if it glitters someone will by it. This business of trying to I.D. a mineral from a photo, even a good photo, is some what of a futile exercise. Even an exemplary photo illustration in high quality geology texts can only give a crude notion of what the mineral is like in a natural setting. But I find this thread interesting non the less. I would guess Iron-- if I where to guess.
Steve Herschbach
Yeah, like the blue cast in the photo. Visual id is very difficult which is why it is best to go with physical properties: Color Streak Hardness Cleavage or Fracture Crystalline Structure Diaphaneity or Amount of Transparency Tenacity Magnetism Luster Odor Taste Specific Gravity I have toyed with the idea of putting a hyperlinked mineral test flow chart on the website for the minerals prospectors commonly run into.
