Popular Post Doc Bach
Went for a very long hike recently up to the top of a ridge a mile or so above a local river. My primary focus in addition to finding Native American artifacts and detecting around a spring and pepper wood grove where there was once a small hunting camp, was a very low odds chance of stumbling upon a rare and highly coveted local soda water bottle from the 1870's that was bottled over in the next canyon. Not even a shard of any glass was found, but I did come across a couple of the commonly found acorns etc grinding and pounding stones.Detecting wise just the usual spent lead and modern rifle and pistol brass from buck and wild hog hunters and the forged iron campfire fork. The real find of the day was lying right on the surface hiding in plain sight on a steep shale covered slope.Maybe the ferral pigs rooted it out and it rolled down the hill? I Still Cannot Believe That This Survived Or At The Very Least Had Not Been Shot To Pieces. Looks Like This Has Been Stepped On By A Horse Or Mule And Or Other Animals? Kinda Looks Like A Bear Print? Not Sure About The Age Of This Canteen? They Were In Use For Quite Sometime It Looks Military? Pestle Hammer Stone/Grinder. 23 1
JCR
Now those are special finds. I think I would spend some time & effort poking around in that area. Bound to be cooler up there too.
abenson
Canteen could be Civil War era, but all the ones I've seen have a pewter spout.

Had to cut my hunt short because i heard what sounded like a gas powered Honda water pump running further up the drainage that I was in. Up high where there is southern exposeure and abundant sunshine.I was anticipating such activity that's why I took my AT MAX which I can live without with me and my 10mm as well.Probably an old school outdoor cartel early girl grow that's close to harvest. The state and local law enforcement people are overwhelmed (and that's an huge understatement) with grows have put those on the low priority because the risk far exceeds the reward.I will head back this winter during the off season.
JCR
It is wise to be mindful now a days. If we detected 100 years ago it would be moonshiners.
Doc Bach
Nah no bueno I think that I would much rather take my chances with those boys from Juarez and they can play pretty rough.
Valens Legacy
Canteen looks like this one I have the link for. https://www.antiquesnavigator.com/d-2501688/original-vintage-civil-war-era-military-canteen-with-cork-stopper.html It shows the cork stopper and the 2 tabs on each side. Great find and it is from the Civil War.
