  1. I hear ya on the tone range. If I use custom tone on my Tejon the audio is flat with just a fade or pop on various targets and flat on pp/am. This is ok when looking for small weak targets like small jewelry or in low trash areas but find myself swapping to the default that in those high trash areas so I can really tell depth, size and target type. Even though the tone range on the Tejon is probably not nearly as wide as the other detectors that range really helps. I rarely disc when I hunt other than base line iron removal when needed.
  2. I was doing quite a bit of spin casting for pins, key chains etc in pewter. I looked into plating but it was simply not cost effective. Scary stuff back then I bet. I did work for a plating and anodizing company and remember when one of his sulfuric acid tanks decided to burst leaving the anodizing room 3ft deep in sulfuric acid! His rooms were epoxy coated to handle the spills. Casswell and Contenti sell safer plating options that are more environmentally friendly for plating if that is even such a thing but at least they don't typically use cyanide. I thought cyanide was used when plating chrome but I forget. I don't believe it's needed for jewelry work. Monsanto is a very shady company. I remember when they would have gm soybeans and would sue local farmers that bee's had inadvertently cross pollinated adjacent farms under patent infringements. These small farms would go bankrupt through the courts. I could be wrong but believe they sold off to Bayer to avoid up coming lawsuits from carcinogens found in Round-Up.
  3. No comments? This is a digger I started to develop about 3 years ago and finally happy with the current one. I will be looking for a few people who use a hand digger more than a foot digger and willing to put it through it's paces and give feedback on what they think. Still working out a reliable supply chain for materials and have a few possible tweaks. Also hoping the tariffs will get cancelled soon as they doubled my material costs. I plan on either manufacturing them myself or if possible find a USA based shop to make them. I also plan not to do direct sales and prefer dealer distribution. Thanks
  4. They do sound good but not a fan on the inline audio control. Keep bumping it and not good when you run on a silent search machine. Wondering why the other day I was swinging and swinging and thinking, wow not even a bit of foil out here... Did a quick gb check and no sound and duh, bumped the switch 😞 Really threw me because shortly after that my batteries ran out Doh!
  5. Putting my Garrett Stow aways through the paces. The are working great in the woods, not getting hung up on branches like the full size one but I have a couple gripes on the inline volume control. They are easy to bump and lose settings as well as they tend to catch when i set my detector down. Knowing that now I think the MS-2 have a better setup.
  6. Outside of not being waterproof, why would you want to find another detector? Id explore extra coils for that V3.
  7. Maybe the big is enough of a difference to throw the machine off, did have some descent depth but not worth the instability. Using my 5 clicks down from GB and I'm happy. Targets are consistent.
  8. I have those headphones under another name and though they sound ok the cord is pretty stiff especially in the cold, pads are a little hard on the ears and the mono switch doesn't seem to work. I love the Garrett MS-2 headphones on my AT Pro. The cord stretches nice, very comfortable and has single knob for volume that I find easier as I am always bumping them and find the double knob a pain to re-adjust and they have better sound. I believe the MS-2 with 1/4 end run the same money. I recently got the Garrett Stow-aways which are a bit tight on the ears, still far better than the ones you showed, cord is thinner and volume adjust is on the cord (which I already find myself bumping). They sound really good for smaller headphones and got them as they are a little bit less cumbersome and lighter as I tend to do a lot of woods hunting. Bottom line if you do all day hunting MS-2 is a safe choice. Can't speak on other brands as I haven't tried them.
  9. This last spring they had cut the fields in the area and I went crazy detecting until I found out most those redish roots were poison oak. Eye was all closed up, hands and arms coated LOL So far baking soda doing a good job here. neutralizes the alkaline in the ivy. They do sell a soap for that I believe, never used it though. The memorials were 74 and a 91 i think, chucked them in my change jar.
  10. Not a double die but has excellent detail on all except the flying eagle that is the oldest. I just took a nylon brush to get the mud off with bit of water. Leaving the rest as I may have them appraised as or professionally cleaned. Bunch of cool places I been hitting all around my area. All are old trails through public woods. Some so riddled with poison ivy most would cringe but it has a nice yellow leaves and red berries this time of year 🙂 I actually just scrub my hands and arms down with some baking soda after and don't usually get it. Been trying to find a nice LiDAR map reader and data sets so I can see if some the trails I been hitting even show up on them and where they may lead. As it is I go through and carefully look for those thin lost paths where the dirt has been packed down usually old hunting trails that come off of larger main trails. I look at tree sizes where what might have been clearings (smaller trees of similar trunk size). Once I start finding old bullet rounds and old shotgun shells I know I'm in a descent area. Most of the places are pretty free of trash and can almost run in all metal mode. So quiet compared to park hunting! Nice thing about woods hunting is you really don't need a state of the art machine, coins so far been less than 8" deep.
  11. 4 coins on the right all stacked about 7" down. 2 cent 1867, 2 cent 1864, Indian head 1866 and Flying Eagle 1857. Other IH was on a nearby trail 1906 2 cent pieces look like large moto. Looks like that lucky charm I glued on my tejon is still working :)
  12. RTG basket type so gap between wires is about 7/16". I agree PVC won't handle gravel and rocks very well. $200 scoop is a bit much. Saw a Sito that has small holes in the middle and back but also pretty pricey.
  13. I've seen that. Problem is by the time I get my scoop within reach it's empty. I have to painstakingly try to get the small finds on the tip of the scoop where it is solid. Frustrating when you see a glimmer of something gold disappear.
  14. I have an RTG but the screen openings are way too big for small jewelry. What are some better options for small items like earrings etc.? Was thinking of making one out of pvc so I could dangle it over my coil when wading but would rather not re-invent the wheel if I don't have to.
  15. I wanted something lighter than the ms-2's and something i can hear around me as some parts are pretty rough out here. Yes those are the ones I got. I might replace my MS-2's with them later on as those are pretty beat up and I already patched the wires. MS-2's are really comfortable and light weight but I'm finding the full size is too much in the summers. I can't compare sounds between them as they are on 2 different detectors. I can't justify buying a nice pair of Ghosts so they get trashed as I stumble through the woods. Maybe if I was in the fields and parks they would be great The earring/charm broke just around the nickel range. Is nice to find especially since I was hitting only trash earlier, not even a zinc penny!
  16. I did forget to mention, if you plan on hitting the salt then the Nox is the best choice for vlf's.
  17. Don't count out the Multi Kruzer. Traditional handle, elliptical coil that may do better in bad soil/trashy areas and phenomenal recovery speed. I think the speedometer style display is nice too. Worth a test run if you have a dealer near by where you can try them out.
  18. My old headphones got all beat up over the summer plowing through the woods so I snagged a pair of Garrett Stow Aways for my Tejon. I was really surprised how good the audio really is on them. They do fit a little tight and are smaller but have a really great range of sound. Now I need to re-learn my sounds. Anyways I didn't spend much time out, maybe half hour or so and left the 10x12 coil which kills me in trashy areas but I did get a nice smooth hit on this little 18k rose gold ear ring with a few diamond chips 0.7g. Was only inch or so deep nothing to brag about.
  19. Wanted to add a note: The black sinkers are lead that have come in contact with hydrogen sulphide. Had to look that up because usually sinkers oxidize and turn white. I believe in this particular pond the houses around it are using high phosphate fertilizers causing algae blooms which then deplete the oxygen.... yadda yadda. Anyways off to another crusade and see if i can get the town to crack down on the type of fertilizer these people are using. That pond used to be crystal clear good dozen years ago and you could see the bottom 15+ ft down. Now it's murky.
  20. Went back today to that small area with my PI to see what I missed with the vlf and dug up a slew of bobby pins. Something I think I only found 1 at the salt beaches. I missed some small gold chain bits and some small ear rings as they keep falling through my stupid scoop. Really tricky to get them on the end of the scoop and bring them to the surface. Found an odd looking pointy thing with a screw back along with a cruddy old kids ring that was pretty deep 12"+ and a few sinkers including that tiny one next to the stud. I have a couple computer hard drive magnets in my scoop I use to snag broken lobster traps so I'm not going crazy looking for what beeps and they worked fairly well on the bobby pins. Definitely need to modify or find a better scoop for this tiny stuff. My run was cut short as my batteries croaked out.
  21. I ended up going to factory reset as the machine was really unstable but it did hit a dime at 10 air test using Nel Big coil calibration on a stock coil. How the machine behaved in the real world it was actually not very usable. Perhaps in clean ground it might be ok but not around here. I do think the AT Pro is toned down by the factory and probably for stability and made to be forgiving. Did you gain more depth on your Ace?
  22. Seems like these companies are having a race to the bottom. They are taking new developments and scrunching them down to grab at the new potential consumers. Not that bad an idea for xmas season but how about working on some substantial new tech? Wonder if these new machines will drive the prices down on some the other machines. Seeing the Simplex and Vanquish makes Tesoro's look more and more like a tick in time in the past.
