Coinshooting With The D2 Turns Up Unusual Find

I almost never use high notches when detecting, but at a recent detecting club hunt at an old, but still used rodeo and fair ground, I decided to throw caution to the wind. The club has hunted there before and many silver coins have been found, but this time the silvers were much fewer, but still being found. So for this hunt, I ran Fast Full Tones and notched up to 79, with a small hole from 59-63 for nickels, to eliminate chasing the deluge of pull tabs and ring pulls.

It was a hot dry day and while I was wading through a pile of bottle caps, I got a visit from a curious local. Apparently he wanted to know what I was doing in his neighborhood, but decided to hang out for a little while to see if I found anything good.

We hung out together for a little while and then he headed home to get out of the sun.

The coinshooting setup was working pretty well hitting quarters, dimes, and pennies. I found a bunch of copper Memorial pennies and even popped a couple of crusty Wheat pennies, but the oldest quarters and dimes I got were 1965. I took a break for lunch and to cool off for a bit and then headed back out. I took about four steps off the road and hit a banging 82. As I dug down 4 or 5 inches expecting a nice big bottle cap, I was pleasantly surprised by the glint of gold!

It turned out to be a broken 10K class ring from 1960! Well that made my hunt and was really the only other good signal I got that day, but that was definitely good enough for me. 😎

Wildlife visitation is always a bonus CPT! No horned lizards here in New England. I did have a big leggy coyote visit me a couple of hunts ago. I think it heard the high pitched iron falsing bleeding from my WSA IIs. It was expecting an easy rodent meal and was disappointed to see me. LIke just about every other coyote I've crossed paths with over the years, it left in a hurry when it figured out I wasn't breakfast.

The infinity symbol and hoop earring aren't silver? Look for tiny hallmarks.

No marks on the hoop earring or infinity necklace. The earring was attracted by a magnet but the infinty was not.

That was a great hunt. We used to have quite a few Horned Toads here when I was a kid. The Fire Ant put them out of business. Same with quail. Hogs haven’t helped either.

The Colorado hornytoads are smaller than the ones we had in Central Texas when I was a kid, which were the size of Volkswagens. 😉
