A major reason for this seemingly-random trend was fatigue from the rapid advancement of technology and society as a whole. A lot of the sash buckles are some sort of butterfly. I guess they paid attention to the little things back then. Heres a some sort of spider broach I found this year at an old mining camp. Not sure how it was attached as there is no pin.
