My bad. Ground Tracking is no where to be found on my WS6 running 0.71 I forgot about the shortcut to Ground Grab by holding the options button. Otherwise, looks like another feature/setting that has been promised but is not available on WS6 like it is on the main remote.

I’m not Gary but I ground balance with the WS6 all the time. There may be other easier ways but I just pick the program I want, then press the Menu button (lower right with red highlight) and work my way through the settings=discrim, sensitivity, freq. shift, iron vol.,reactivity, audio response, and then you come to GRAB…..hold the menu button while pumping the coil over clean ground until the numbers stabilize. Procedure is on page 21.

According to some Facebook posts, the Gold Kruzer is being discontinued. The Legend is definitely not being discontinued. I have owned both and I absolutely prefer the Legend or the 24K over the Gold Kruzer. For me, the Gold Kruzer did not have a world class prospecting mode since it had no way to adjust things like discrimination, recovery speed or iron bias. It’s Boost and Micro modes were really good. The Legend can do those three things easily and its SMF tech can handle many ground conditions that will overload the Gold Kruzer. The only negative with the Legend right now is the 10X5” DD has not been released yet. The Legend’s 6” coil is really good however. Just my opinion from using them both.

Anyone that has investigated this phenomenon knows that the target ID tech on most VLFs uses a cyclical target ID system. So it’s not linear. After a certain point, too many high conductors in one spot will force the IDs further around the cyclical scale and back into the “ trash” zone as you called it in your title. The exact opposite can happen to low conductor non-ferrous in high iron mineralization and during iron masking. This can happen on ANY VLF no matter what it costs.

The biggest complaint I have about the Legend is the very full user interface and its navigation. Otherwise, totally fantastic detector.

You are definitely a big player in the Minelab marketing game. I’m just having a bit of fun plus there are more than enough Manticore hype filled topics on the forums to keep you rabid Mantis fans occupied. I guess you folks are taking over this topic too.

11 can also be an actual target ID for borderline ferrous/nonferrous targets.

Legend target ID 11 is kind of a "catch all" "don't know" target ID from my experience. So is 1....... 11 is also a ground response target ID similar to 23 to 25 on Deus 2 and -1 to +2 on the Equinox. Coke, charcoal, slag, magnetite and weird, wet or extremely dry ground conditions can cause those responses from my experience.

Sole purpose for me running disc up to 40 was to categorize below 40 audio responses as iron responses or less important responses. I don't concern myself with responses from iron or steel objects that are responding as mixed ferrous/non-ferrous objects since that is exactly what they are and these advanced SMF detectors are giving truthful and accurate responses to them. If I don't want to hear that "falsing" I will just turn up bottle cap reject and maybe the Silencer. Running disc above -6.4 will definitely help with magnetite induced ground responses when a proper ground balance isn't enough to take care of them due to soil moisture levels or some other factor. Common target IDs for magnetite/ground responses in my area are -6.4 to -5.5, 0, and very rarely+25. Those aren't "falsing". They are actual target responses that are ground noise related. Running disc to +40 again was just a quick and easy way from me to put less emphasis on more than likely non-gold ring IDs from 25 to 40. It's taking a chance if say I was never going to detect that area again. That is not the case. I will continue to hunt that park with different detectors and with different settings......seven rings in the last 3 months along with multiple silver coins, wheat pennies, war nickels and lots of clad. Iron volume level depends on what headphones I’m using and wind/traffic noise. Usually with good headphones and very little ambient noise, 1 or 2.

I didn't answer your question very well. I am fairly dense most of the time.. To keep it short, I don't want to notch that area below where the gold ring range starts. I would rather just disc it instead. That way if I happen to get over a really strong sounding 35 for instance or a target that is giving multiple alternating ferrous and non-ferrous target IDs and isn't acting like a steel object, I will have a shot at making a dig/no dig decision. It could be a chain or a damaged ring............Like I said, I don't mind hearing lots of faint, tiny iron responses that are more than likely bits of foil or aluminum or really deep rusted iron bits. Since WS6 only has one available notch, I would rather use it for a specific, persistent, unwanted target or range of targets higher up the target ID scale.

So rallymaker, what was the clearly stated reason for the effectiveness of Deus 2 at the places that I often use it for coin and jewelry detecting?????? That post is above this one on this page and is a response to Calmark. I will put it this way. If I had used Deus 2's Mono program using any of its selectable single frequencies at the place I described, every target on that paper plate would have given me a target ID and corresponding tone for an ID above 88. I would have gotten more information about the target by just hunting in Pitch tones while ignoring the target ID screen. Most of those targets were 4 to 6" deep. I would have had absolutely no clue what I was about to dig with a screwdriver which I have to use due to municipal digging restrictions. So, Deus 1 and the ORX drove me crazy at sites like this with their constant up averaging and way off target IDs. This topic was Deus 2 Continues To Impress and is for people who want to gain some encouragement about using their Deus 2 for coin, jewelry and relic hunting in challenging magnetite laced soil conditions. If you want to start a Deus 2 Continues to Unimpress topic, by all means do so. I will contribute to it with a commiserate response and not one that is totally contradictory and OFF topic.

The two main reasons are that I didn’t want to be distracted by really small micro can slaw and smaller foil both of which tend to have target IDs in the upper 20s to 40. I am willing to miss a 0.1 gram earring back or a tiny gold chain. I would much rather find a 1 gram to 10 gram gold ring, pendant, bracelet, charm etc. I have limited time right now due to a physical injury to dig those tiny targets. I live in a part of the USA where there is a birthday party or two celebrated every weekend in public parks that involve piñata’s filled with aluminum foil coated sweets and lots of Modelo with foil covered steel crown bottle caps. Just a fact, not a cultural or political statement. Setting discrimination at 40 lets these sub 40 small aluminum targets all have faint iron responses that I can just ignore as viable targets. I don’t mind hearing iron responses. Plus, using the WS6 puck which is all I have, there is only one available notch so I won’t waste it on tiny foil and micro aluminum. I had the iron volume turned down pretty low too since there are many rotting turf staples at about 5” so I just wanted to concentrate on surface to 6” deep, obvious good sounding non-ferrous targets, especially those in the 40 to 88 small to large gold ring range. Any target that sounds good that is above 87 is very likely a USA clad coin, silver coin or silver jewelry which I am going to dig.

That is why I post stuff like this. Anyone that hunts in bad dirt can do this by knowing their detector’s capabilities and tendencies, hunting in likely jewelry drop areas and by being willing and able to dig plenty of good sounding trash. Having a detector with high iron mineralization capable SMF tech and an expanded target ID range for gold targets really helps too. That 14k ring has a 14/15 target ID on the Equinox. Any experienced Nox user knows what targets also share those IDs and is possibly why I might not have dug that target using the Equinox simply due to way too many targets in the 12 to 15 target ID range where I detect and I can be sloppy/not willing to dig. However, I have dug 27 gold rings on turf with the Equinox so other than the crowded gold range target IDs, it is a highly capable gold ring detector. Deus 2, Legend and the upcoming Manticore also have the necessary features to make them excellent gold jewelry detectors.

After today’s hunt, my XP Deus 2 Lite is paid for. So is my Nokta Legend since July. Two absolutely awesome detectors that will only get better with updates and hopefully more coil choices.

My sentiments exactly. Like I said earlier, the user interface/navigation kind of sucks compared to the Equinox. My only other minus is the 10X5” coil isn’t available yet. Otherwise, it is an Equinox with a few extra features and improvements in a Legend housing which is totally fine with me……So is Deus 2 and I only have the Lite version. Who needs a Mantipedi….

I have been cleared by my surgeon to metal detect but only on flat/level ground and I have to wear my CAM boot. Luckily I have two of these ankle boots so getting goose pooh, mud and snow all over my older beat up one is no problem. I have been out three times in the last week for about 1.5 hours each time. Great way to walk my dog and I get to dig 40 or 50 targets. Getting down on the ground to retrieve deeper targets and back up is a pain but hey, at least I'm walking and metal detecting. Deus 2 has been the detector I chose for the three hunts because I wanted to see if that ugly makeshift stand I concocted would actually hold up......so far it works great and no cartwheeling Deus 2 lately. Lots of people on this forum have been asking questions about hunting gold jewelry with Deus 2. I basically am always hunting for gold jewelry or any jewelry when I go out to one of the many local parks or school grounds in my area. Today I hunted a local park where there are organized sports activities like smaller child mini soccer games, adult volleyball (on grass), ultimate frisbee and also a rugby league. At a place like this it is always a question for me whether I should hunt the actual playing field or the sidelines where participants keep there belongings and where any spectator might sit to watch. Usually I try to find the sidelines by following the trail of trash. That is what I did today and I was rewarded. I had Deus 2 in FMF Fast with discrimination set at 40 and 5 tones for iron, small gold 40 to 58, US nickels and medium gold 59 to 65, larger gold and zinc pennies 66 to 87 and US clad and silver 88 to 99. So I did not have anything notched out and I made myself dig any good sounding target between 40 and 98 that wasn't too deep (down to about 6") with an emphasis on the 40 to 87 range where gold rings can definitely happen. I dug about 40 targets in a little more than an hour. Half were pull tabs/aluminum trash. The other half were US clad, a 1944 silver Mercury dime, a stainless steel/CZ honker ring target ID 50, a 3.5 gram .925 silver ring target ID 96 and a 8 gram 14K gold ring with diamonds and ebony target ID 72. All three rings were in a straight line, just on the edge of the playing field about 10 feet apart. So I got all three on one pass parallel to the playing field. Man did that feel good. I will eventually hit the playing fields too for sure. I did not by any means dig every target I heard. Only the really good sounding ones that were not at the edge of detection according to tone quality and the WS6 depth meter. Dig that good sounding aluminum trash.......it is the only way to not miss quality jewelry and bling that is mixed in with it.

So Simon, with version 6 you can pair the ORX wireless headphones=WSAs with the Deus 1 full remote or the round WS4 controller. That couldn’t be done previously. The WSAs cost $99 new here in the USA.

The Equinox is not in any way made or assembled in the USA. A component or two…..maybe. Minelab have never made or assembled a hobby metal detector in the USA. Their military/law enforcement/first responder communications equipment division…….maybe.
