Steve`s European detector article also points out another important plus for the Deus over the CTX, single frequency, I use nearly exclusively 4Khz, and with the 9" coil it has a depth advantage over the CTX with its 11" coil. Not knocking ML just my take, be a different story I suspect if I did salt beaches. But its lightness and compactness really gives it the edge, cannot comment too much on its discrimination as dig all non-ferrous, discrimination of Pb, Al etc take out our lovely 1/2 sovereign.

Yes back to IE for me I suspect, have no other dramas with Win 10, yeah Win 8 was my shortest used OS, suspect MS was dipping deep into the water with 8.

Am having some problems with Win 10`s Edge and the 4M, will not allow the posting of smiley faces and at times I have to sign in and out again to post. Suspect my problem may be my satellite Internet conx, not Win 10, just wondering are others having problems here?

Have no problems with the Deus`s GB in the OZ goldfields I prospect, (noisy vlf), although the GPZ is THE gold machine of my choice. The Deus pinpointer is of interest, have you XPUK any knowledge of this.

Had that occur on odd ocasions with the Xs but not with the Z, no matter of tuning would get it out, then it would just go, was told it is probably low ground seeking radar from a close Air Force site. Same symptoms would give an oscillating "hum" even with coil stationary. Can sort of simulate it by having a Deus close even if off, in the Deus`s case probably the coil looking for the remote.

I`m all over the place, from no threshold to plenty, with the GPZ I leave it on 20 sensitivity mainly(but not all the time) and leave screen on threshold setting so as I can adjust quickly. I believe it has got more to do with my tolerance at a particular time of day rather then ground conditions and whether I`m patch hunting or patch cleaning up. On coins I love the Deus and it has a silent threshold, very rarely touch its sensitivity. No headphones on both if conditions allow, but believe it is purely a personal thing based on your hearing and what works for you.

Steve, just looking through your pan of non-ferrous targets, there are no brass buttons, are they not present in your fields? Over here in NQ OZ they are probably the most non-ferrous targets after bullets around old workings.

Got to agree, whilst gold has always paid the way, the hobby is what it is about. To compare with fishing, have an excuse for why I don`t catch many fish, reckon they cost about $5000 each fish (boats, fuel, tackle etc) thus can`t afford to catch many!!!!!!!! A nugget, a coin or a fish tis the same difference if you enjoy.

I`d say it is definately a clock key Paul, note towards the rear the two "live" old pin bullets. Get a fair number of those when hunting near old workings, something I don`t do much now days, prefer to hunt away from workings, in "virgin" areas the results are much better, although sometimes weeks or more between finds.

The copper/brass cylinder above it is a match container(I think), still has a sort of sandpaper surface on top, for match striker, for its age and where found is in amazing condition, lid unscrews after cleanup. I think the two small collars at front are carrier pigeon leg collars. They have numbers on them

Paul, your a really bad influence, I found one on Ebay OZ and ordered for my 4yr grand son for Xmass. Great way to get him a good case of untreatable detectsoritis that`ll last his lifetime perhaps.

Yeah, I think there is some diffs in nationalities attitudes although I`ve not noticed much between us and you folks( other than Fords), but recall once run into a German prospector, invited him back to camp for a drink.. He noticed we had dug down into the dry river bed sand for our water supply. He considered we were taking a big risk drinking that water (it was crystal clean, sweet), he considered it was probably full of mercury. I didn`t have the heart to tell him the water he was using at the caravan park he was camped in come from downstream about 10 miles from our soak. I think he was mirroring the more environmental awareness attitude of European folks. Relichunter...... the pandas aren`t much of a worry, but you gotta keep your eye on the drop bears.

It really is not rocket science. Detectors that get used find stuff, detectors in closets gather dust. ​ That is the best bit of advice but probably the most disregarded. If it weren`t so coin detector manufacturers would be concentrating on GB, depth and useability enhancements rather than discrimination features. There just would not be a confusing number of detectors with massive amount of features. The one feature I`d love to see is GPS full features complete with say a android screen, ML with the CTX is getting there.

Chasing coins with our "evolved" dig almost all signals and single frequency is the go approach, would say a A2B and a say a CTX operator both of same experience do any different on the same old settlement or park site? Excluding salt beaches where the CTX would be king of course. I would not entertain this question in the gold fields, a A2B verse a GPZ, just no contest. Yet one would think by following 4Ms that a discriminator is needed on a GPZ? Are our machines evolving away from what the operator wants to what the operator is perceived to want? A commercial product for the masses rather then a machine for the enthusiast.

Yeah, guess I`m in fairyland re. light GPZ, but maybe a light, non-gimmicky 2300................come on ML.

Not a drama your initial post being long as it is concise as per your "hot 7000 setting" post. I think my son is heading the same way with his CTX, replacing with or at least acquiring a Deus. Not that the Deus lacks features but it is so light, compact and easy to swing over the CTX. Many hours running them side by side over the same old sites tell the story. Why lunk a heavy detector if there is no advantage? in fact a disadvantage with the slow recovery. I see a few messages to the manufacturers in your post, light to swing, good depth and fast recovery detectors is the way. Now if we could have a GPZ with those attributes...............probably not possible now but down the track?

Wow, that is a marathon post, I`m going to have to reread a few times. Way back with the A2B I did a few early 1900 vacant sites, got many copper and silver coins. Bugger all discrimination, dug everything that wasn`t too big a signal. Back to the same sites with a recently acquired Deus, firstly with heavy notch discrimination, get rid of all ferrous targets and lead, bugger all targets and I was very disappointed. Remove notch discrimination, only discrimination at lower end for ferrous and set with 5 tones, 4Khz frequency, and play with reactivity. Now in conjunction with tones and visual ID a little more success, mainly at depth which can be attributed to the frequency. But not the success as back with the A2B, I guess with all the years of tech advance, the notch discrimination etc all the features that sell detectors, but do they represent much in the way of more finds? like the GPZ does to gold. My experience tells me no, lighter and easier to use, but all that discrimination for what. Not knocking discrimination no way, has its uses, but at these sites I`m digging all smaller signals still as back 30 years, next tackle the larger signals, and address the target masking issue.

From my 35 plus years prospecting have only seen one taipan, that was in NT, a few pythons, night tigers etc. Yes I also think there is a fair few myths about OZ, our ground being the hottest being one of them. That is more of an excuse for getting bugger all and blame the detector. But on snakes the Taipan encounter in the NT probably would have ended in tragedy had my dog not warned me. The snake was in strike mode with its head probably 18 inches off the ground, was a large snake about 8ft long. (was shot by a local next day, but not at my insistence, in fact had I known it would have been shot I would have kept quiet) I still have chills when I think how fortunate I was and believe I was saved by a mans best mate.
